Midwestern State plays for the fourth time in the Lone Star Football
The No. 23 Midwestern State Mustangs look to make it two in a row as they return for the fourth straight season to the home of the Dallas Cowboys, AT&T Stadium, for the Lone Star Football Festival.
The Mustangs are looking for a bit of revenge against defending Lone Star Conference co-champion Eastern New Mexico, who handed MSU a 40-21 loss a season ago.

Festival. The festival is a partnership between the Lone Star Conference and the Dallas Cowboys who are jointly hosting the affair at the home of Super

This season’s event is a one-day affair featuring some of the best NCAA Division II football teams nationally, with two nationally ranked teams and a fourof the eight Division II teams receiving votes in the AFCA poll.
The festival joins the Pittsburg State vs. Northwest Missouri State game at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City as a site where Division II contests are played in an NFL facility.
The action starts Saturday morning at 10 a.m. with a
Lone Star Conference matchup betweenTexas A&M-Commerce andTexas A&M-Kingsville for the Chennault Cup.
At 1 p.m.,WestTexas A&M meets Shorter (Ga.) in a non-conference tilt, while No. 12Tarleton State faces FloridaTech in a non-conference affair at 5 p.m.
No. 23 MSU meets Eastern New Mexico in LSC action at 8 p.m.
MSU comes in with a 1-0 record overall as it opens LSC play after a 40-23 win over Missouri S&T last Saturday at Memorial Stadium.
ENMU sports a 2-0 overall record to start league action after trouncing Adams State a 42-14 last Saturday at Blackwater Draw. Eastern currently has an eight-game winning streak dating back to last year, the longest active streak in the conference.
The Mustangs are paced by the running of Dante

Taylor who rushed for 150 of MSU’s 287 yards

against the Miners.

Defensively, junior safety Marqui Christian

recorded 11 tackles and snared the season’s first

interception that set up a Mustangs score.
Midwestern State is back in the AFCA Divison
II Coaches Poll this week, while ENMU is receiving votes by the coaches.

About the series

This is the 20th meeting between Midwestern and
Eastern New Mexico with MSU leading the series 14-5.
The series had games in 1949 and 1955,then resumed in 1997 when MSU joined the Lone Star Conference.
The Hounds snapped MSU’s 11-game winning streak over them with the 40-21 win last season. Still,MSU has won 12 of the last 14 meetings between the teams.

It’s the first time they will meet on a neutral field.

Conference Championship in 1949,Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championship in 1991 and Lone Star Conference Championship in 2011.
MSU added shared titles in 1947 (Texas Conference),
1950 (Gulf Coast), 1994 (TIAA), 2009 (LSC) and 2012 (LSC). The Mustangs also won LSC Divisional crowns in 2001 (LSC North), 2004 (co-LSC South) and 2009 (coLSC South).

MSU tops LSC in new millenium

Midwestern State has blazed its way to the top of the Lone Star Conference as one of the most steady programs in all of NCAA Division II.
The Mustangs have averaged more than seven wins a season since the start of the 2000 season and overtookTarleton State to become the league’s winning percentage leader over the last decade after defeating Southwestern Oklahoma 46-9 on Sep. 18, 2010.

About Bill Maskill

AFCA Poll

Bill Maskill is starting his 15th season as a head coach and 13th campaign at Midwestern State.
He has led the Mustangs to winning ledgers in each of his years at the helm of the program including the

school’s first Lone Star Conference championship in 2009 and first undefeated regular season in 2011.

Under Maskill’s guidance, MSU has advanced to the NCAA Division II postseason in the 2004, 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2012 seasons while amassing an 96-37 record (.722). He was named LSC Coach of theYear in 2009, 2011 and 2012, and was the AFCA Regional Coach of theYear in 2011.

His coaching experience includes stops as a Division I assistant atVanderbilt (twice), Southern Methodist, Wake Forest, Oregon,Tulane, Louisville,Arizona State, Bowling Green and Iowa.
Maskill has a 109-45 overall record (.708) and led
Southeast Missouri State to a 1988 MIAA Co-Championship.
While at SEMO, Maskill helped two men, Jon
Gruden and Marty Mornhinweg, who later became head coaches in the National Football League, get their start.
Maskill comes from a great coaching background.
His father, Bill, Sr., is considered to be one of the greatest high school football coaches in the history of the state of Michigan. First at Sheridan then at Augusta High School in Galesburg, Mich. At the time of his retirement, he was the winningest high school football coach in the state’s history.
Maskill played college football atWestern Kentucky, where he quarterbacked while earning bachelor’s degrees in Physical Education and Biology.
Maskill and his wife, Mary Helen, have two grown children: a son, Hunter; and a daughter, Jaime.

The LSC continues to build upon its proud history while intending to be recognized as the premier NCAA Division II conference in the nation. The league’s mission is to foster student participation and success among member institutions in NCAA Division II intercollegiate athletics as an integral part of each institution’s total educational program. The LSC shall pursue student-athlete development with highest regard to the principles of academic excellence, graduation success, sportsmanship, ethical conduct, resourcefulness, community service, gender equity, and diversity. The LSC - founded on April 25, 1931 - has developed from a five-team conference of Texas- based schools to a 19-member league that spans four states (Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arkansas). The league continues to assist its member institutions in the maintenance of intercollegiate athletic programs that are compatible with the highest standards of education and competitive sports. Throughout the league’s 88-year history, various institutions have competed under the LSC banner. Today, only Texas A&M-Commerce (then East Texas State) remains from the original group that was formed in 1931 when North Texas State, Southwest Texas State, Sam Houston State and Stephen F. Austin withdrew from the old Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The membership alignment has changed over the years, with current members added from 1954 to 2019.
