More Information on the New Grading System

As part of the new grading practices in Baltimore County, students are required to pass at least one quarter each semester in order to pass for the year. So, even if a student passes both the first and sec- ond quarter, if he or she were to earn an E third quarter and fourth quarter, the student would earn a failing grade for the entire year. The opposite is also true. If a student fails the first and second quar- ter, but then passes both the third and fourth quarter, he or she may still receive a failing grade for the class. It is important that students work hard every quarter to get the best possible grade they can.

Notification of Sexual Offender in the Community

The safety of all students and staff in Baltimore County Public Schools is of utmost importance to all of us. Our school, as well as all Baltimore County schools, is utilizing a visitor check-in sys- tem. The system is called V-soft by Raptor, otherwise known as Raptor. The information collect- ed will not be shared outside of the school and is stored on a secure server. Registration of all visitors is neces- sary so that in the event of an emergency in the school, a record of all people currently in the building will be available. When you visit our school for the first time, you will be asked to present govern- ment issued photo identification (ID) or a driver’s license to a staff member in our main office. The ID will be scanned and your photo, name, and date of birth will be extracted. This information will be used to log you in and compare your information against the national sex offender database. Once your ID is scanned and you are cleared, a visitor pass will be printed for you. The visitor pass you receive must be worn on your outer garment. You will need only to show your ID on future visits. You will be asked to log out with office staff upon completion of your business so that we know you are no longer in the building. If you refuse to have your ID scanned, you will be denied access to the school. The only alternative to this process is to allow staff to see your ID to verify your name and date of birth so that this information can be manually entered into the system. This method does not store information. Therefore, you must go through this process each time you visit the school. You must have a government issued ID or a driver’s license to be manually entered. Other forms of IDs will not be accepted. If you are matched to the sex offender database, you will be denied access to the school. Only the principal can override this decision and identify conditions un- der which you may visit. Your assistance in keeping our students and staff safe is appreciated.

Influenza

The Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by flu viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The flu is different from a cold. The flu usually comes on suddenly. People who have the flu often feel some or all of these symptoms:

 Fever* or feeling feverish/chills –temperature greater than or equal to 100° Fahrenheit  Cough  Sore throat  Muscle or body aches  Runny or stuffy nose  Headaches  Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this  Fatigue (tiredness) is more common in children than adults. * It's important to note that not everyone with flu will have a fever.

Children younger than 5 years old have a greater chance of having problems with the flu. Most chil- dren will get better without needing to go the doctor.

Children with a long term condition such as asthma and diabetes are more likely to have a severe problem if they get the flu.

A child of any age with severe signs of the flu should go to the doctor. If you are unsure, call your doctor and ask if you child should be examined.

While your child is sick, provide them with plenty of clear fluids and make sure they get plenty of rest.

To reduce the spread of the Flu-

Keep your child home for at least 24 hours after his /her fever is gone without fever reducing medi- cations. Do not allow them to share food or drink Keep them in a separate room Try to have one person as the caregiver

From the Athletic Department Greetings from the Athletic Department,

Dear Dundalk Parents/Guardians & Students:

I would like to extend a warm welcome to all new and returning Owls for the 2016-17 school year! Many of you will be participating in our co-curricular programs this year and your experiences will be most rewarding. We are very proud of our co-curricular programs here at Dundalk and we look forward to your participation. In order to participate in athletics at Dundalk each athlete must meet the following requirements: 1. Have a 2.00 or higher GPA for the first quarter 2. Not have failed more than ONE class 3. Have all of the necessary forms signed prior to practice on Nov 15th Have a physical on file from within the last year.

NEW THIS YEAR…

 ALL required paperwork will be completed on-line via a platform called “Form Re- Leaf.” https://formreleaf.com/organizations/dundalk-high-school

 FormReLeaf is a web-based program allowing parents to complete forms ONCE, and then the information will be prepopulated IF you have more than one child OR your child plays more than one sport.

 Medical forms still need be to be completed and returned to the Athletic Director BY THE REQUIRED DUE DATE because of the requirement for the doctor’s signature.

 It is my hope to have the digital system “go live” on, or about, October 13, 2016. Parents will access the site from the Dundalk School website and the dundlakathletics.org website.

 If at any time you need assistance, call the FormReleaf Support line at 1-844-367-6735.

Thank you for your continuing support and participation. Let’s have a great winter season at Dundalk!

Sincerely, Derek Maki, CMAA Athletic Director

PTSA President’s Message

Hello PTSA family and friends!

The overall purpose of a PTSA is to make every child’s potential a reality by engaging and empower- ing families and communities to advocate for all children. We encourage parents/caretakers to become members and participate in events and fundraisers when possible. Becoming a member doesn't mean you have to attend meetings or volunteer; it means you care about the quality of education your child and all children receive. It gives you a voice to vote on issues to be brought before Board of Education committees and the school itself. Becoming a member also has perks such as discounts to popular re- tailers. Please visit: http://www.pta.org/ for a full list. Use the form below, add your payment and send it to the school’s main office. Your membership card will arrive shortly after.

The PTSA is currently looking for a parent volunteer to work with PTSA to be the organizer of the Senior After Prom party. If you are interested, contact the PTSA at [email protected]

The next PTSA meeting is on November 22 at 6 p.m. in the Dundalk High School library. Look for- ward to seeing you there.

"Like" us on Facebook, Dundalk High PTSA, for up to date information.

As always, thanks for your support! Charles Sussan [email protected]
