Kyle Martin drove in all five of Winnipeg’s runs with an RBI single in the first and two-run homers in the third and fifth innings. Kansas City built a 4-1 lead with three in the bottom of the first and one in the second. The Goldeyes pieced together the win with five relievers. Newcomer Justin Kamplain earned the win with 2.0 shutout innings. Parker French worked 3.0 shutout innings in his second relief appearance of the year. Victor Capellan stranded the tying run on second base in the ninth to earn his 19th save. ALL-TIME AGAINST THE AIRHOGS: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 13-4 all-time against the Texas AirHogs, including a 7-3 record at Shaw Park. In 2016, the Amarillo Thunderheads (formerly the Amarillo Sox) and Grand Prairie AirHogs merged into the Texas AirHogs. The club split its 2016 home schedule between Amarillo’s Potter County Memorial Stadium and Grand Prairie’s AirHogs Stadium (formerly QuikTrip Park). Since 2017, the AirHogs have played their home games exclusively in Grand Prairie. Texas was 25-75 in 2018, finishing sixth in the American Association South Division. The Sox joined the league in 2011, and won three consecutive United League championships from 2008-10 when the franchise was known as the Amarillo Dillas. Meanwhile, the Grand Prairie AirHogs won the 2011 American Association championship, overcoming a 2-0 series deficit against the St. Paul Saints. For a second consecutive year, the AirHogs have formed a partnership with the Chinese National Team. A portion of the AirHogs’ roster will be dedicated to members of the Chinese National Team. The remaining roster spots will be reserved for traditional American Association players. Former Major League catcher Chris Bando enters his first season as AirHogs’ manager. Bando played nine seasons in the Majors with the Cleveland Indians, Oakland Athletics, and Detroit Tigers. Bando has 10 years of managerial experience, including three seasons at the Triple-A level. Prior to 2019, Bando last managed the Frontier League’s Washington Wild Things in 2012. SERIES MATCHUP: The Winnipeg Goldeyes are 33-27, in fourth place in the American Association North Division, and 6.5 games behind the St. Paul Saints. The Goldeyes just won two of three from the Kansas City T-Bones at T-Bones Stadium. The Goldeyes are eighth in the American Association in hitting (.265), sixth in pitching (4.57), and first in fielding (.989). The Texas AirHogs are 15-45, in sixth place in the South Division, and 20.0 games behind the Cleburne Railroaders. The AirHogs just swept a three-game series from the Lincoln Saltdogs at AirHogs Stadium. The AirHogs are 12th in the league in batting (.234), 12th in pitching (6.24), and 11th in defence (.971). This is the second of two head-to-head meetings this season between Winnipeg and Texas. The Goldeyes won three of four from the AirHogs in Grand Prairie to open the year. PROJECTED UPCOMING PITCHING MATCHUPS TONIGHT’S STARTERS: The Goldeyes go with left- 7/25 vs. TEX: RHP Joel Seddon (2-3, 7.09) vs. RHP Kevin Hilton (3-6, 3.97) hander Kevin McGovern who is 8-4 with a 4.16 ERA in 12 7/26 vs. TEX: RHP Parker French (3-3, 4.85) vs. RHP Erik Manoah Jr. (4-2, 5.98) starts and one relief appearance this season. McGovern is th 7/27 vs. FAR: TBA vs. TBA tied for first in the American Association in wins and 11 in 7/28 vs. FAR: TBA vs. TBA strikeouts (62). McGovern took the loss vs. Sioux Falls last Thursday, allowing six runs, four earned, on 11 hits in 4.2 innings. McGovern walked three and struck out five. McGovern enters tonight one strikeout back of the Goldeyes’ franchise record (Chris Salamida, 435). On May 26th vs. Kansas City, McGovern struck out 11 batters and picked up the win. McGovern’s fifth strikeout of that game was his 381st as a Goldeye, which moved him into sole possession of second place on the franchise career list. In 2018, McGovern was 5-12 with a 4.73 ERA for the Goldeyes in 21 starts and one relief appearance. McGovern finished fourth in the American Association in innings pitched (129.1), third in strikeouts (129), and second in wins above replacement (WAR) among pitchers (3.3). On July 5th of last year at Sioux City, McGovern passed Richard Salazar for second on the American Association’s career strikeouts list, while simultaneously setting a new league record for strikeouts by a left-handed pitcher. McGovern’s American Association strikeout total currently stands at 597. On August 10th, 2018 at Chicago, McGovern recorded his 100th strikeout of the season, making him just the second pitcher in American Association history to strike out 100-plus batters in four different years (2015-18). McGovern was an American Association All-Star for the Goldeyes during their championship season in 2017, finishing tied for first in the league in wins (13), third in ERA (2.56), tied for third in strikeouts (118), fifth in innings pitched (144.1), and fourth in opponent’s batting average (.221). On August 18th, 2017 at Fargo-Moorhead, McGovern became just the fourth pitcher in American Association history with three seasons of 100-plus strikeouts. During the Goldeyes’ 2016 championship season, McGovern started and won two of the biggest games in franchise history. On the final day of the regular season (September 5th), McGovern pitched a complete game, two-hitter vs. Fargo-Moorhead in the opener of a double header at Shaw Park. The win allowed the Goldeyes to clinch the American Association wild card. Exactly two weeks later on September 19th, McGovern started Game Five of the American Association Championship Series at Wichita on three days of rest. McGovern allowed two earned runs over 6.0-plus innings to earn the win and help the Goldeyes clinch the title. McGovern was acquired from the Lincoln Saltdogs on January 27th, 2016 along with left-handed pitcher Conor Spink and a player to be named later in exchange for catcher Luis Alen and outfielder Logan Vick. McGovern is in his eighth season of professional baseball, and is 48-37 lifetime with a 4.05 ERA in 141 games, 114 of them as a starting pitcher. McGovern has struck out 100 or more batters in each of the past five seasons, and has averaged 8.4 strikeouts per nine innings as a professional. McGovern played college baseball at Philadelphia University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania before beginning his professional career with the Frontier League’s Road Warriors in 2012. McGovern is 1-0 with a 4.74 ERA in three career starts against Texas. McGovern is 24-8 with a 3.00 ERA in 41 starts and one relief appearance in his career at Shaw Park. The AirHogs go with right-hander Zech Lemond who is 0-8 with a 6.57 ERA in 11 starts this season. Lemond took the loss vs. Milwaukee last Wednesday, allowing six runs, five earned, on seven hits in 6.0 innings. Lemond walked three and struck out six. Last year, Lemond was a combined 4-0 with a 2.29 ERA in 35 relief appearances at three levels of the Miami Marlins’ organization. Lemond walked 16 and struck out 47 in 51.0 innings for the Double-A Southern League’s Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, the High-A Florida State League’s Jupiter Hammerheads, and the Marlins’ Rookie Gulf Coast League affiliate. Lemond was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the third round in 2014 out of Rice University in Houston, Texas. Lemond has reached the Double-A level three times in his career, and has averaged just 2.6 walks per nine innings as a professional. Lemond is in his sixth season of professional baseball, and is 19-30 lifetime with three saves and a 5.25 ERA in 154 games, 55 of them as a starting pitcher. Lemond is 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA in one career start against Winnipeg. Tonight will be Lemond’s first career appearance at Shaw Park. GOLDEYES MANAGER: Rick Forney is now in his 14th season as Goldeyes’ manager, and his 23rd overall within the organization. During his first 13 years at the helm, the Goldeyes have posted a .545 overall winning percentage (698-583), 10 winning seasons, nine playoff appearances, and an American Association-record three championships. Forney was voted American Association Manager of the Year in 2011, and managed the American Association during the American Association/Can-Am League All-Star Game in 2017. Forney’s .553 winning percentage in the American Association (2011-18) is the third-highest in league history (there have been 51 total American Association managers through the 2018 season). Forney pitched professionally for 10 years, including four seasons with the Goldeyes. During his playing career, Forney was 89-56 (.614) with a 3.63 ERA, and reached the Triple-A level in 1995. GOLDEYES ALL-STARS SHINE: Goldeyes’ infielder Wes Darvill, starting pitcher Mitchell Lambson, and closer Victor Capellan were all selected to the American Association All-Star Game at CHS Field on July 23rd.
