And our first Kathak dance winner, Dr Helena Joshi, is fast becoming established as one of Australia’s premiere Kathak performers and teachers through her Infinity Kathak Dance Company. I’m very excited about her plans to bring her guru-ji Smt Prerana Deshpande to perform here in early November. Bringing people together in an event like Sangeet Mela creates a magical experience. Nirmala Rajasekar and David Jordan Harris have co-created Song of Wonder, a concert of music which explores the theme of wonder through the music, folktales, and poetry of South Indian and Judeo-Spanish traditions. Inspired by the rich, imagistic poetry and evocative music of more than a thousand years in each tradition, the concert probes the many facets of wonder as gateways to an illumined and impassioned life. Nirmala and David are joined by a trio of distinguished instrumentalists: Carnatic percussion master Thanjavur Muruga Boopathi, percussionist Mick LaBriola, and ‘ud player David Burk. Highlights of Song of Wonder include excerpts from the oldest extant piece of notated Jewish music; improvisational performances by Nirmala on the veena in both familiar and rare ragas (the melodic soundscapes of Indian music); ancient Tamil Sangam poetry; plangent Judeo-Spanish and Hebrew chants from traditional Jewish communities in Bosnia, Turkey, and Morocco; and new musical arrangements flowing from the cross-cultural collaboration. -

It is fundamental. Any attempt to rewrite or overwrite it will not be acceptable to any body. Our collective decision should be based on science, CBDR and collective conscience,” Javadekar said on completion of the preliminary round that ended on Saturday with an ap proved draft text of the Paris climate agreement being released. Though the draft, approved for the ministerial round, has been streamlined a bit by reduc ing it from 55 pages to 48 pages after discussions during the first week of the summit, the high level segment will still have a major task to remove differences over key issues and come out with an agreement. -

DaleWarland 2001 Distinguished Artist the mc knight foundation Introduction horal music is perhaps the most ubiquitous American art form, performed in and out of tune by school and church choirs in every city, town, and rural outpost. But choral music in the Dale Warland style—elegant, moving, provocative, sublime— is rare. Few professional choruses exist in the United States today; even fewer exhibit the quality of the Dale Warland Singers. Warland’s decision to establish his career in Minnesota has brought countless rewards to musicians and audiences here. As a collaborator with local music organizations, a commissioner of Minnesota composers, a conductor of Ceagerly anticipated concerts, and a recording artist, Warland has made Minnesota a national center of choral music. In so doing, he has kept an ancient tradition alive and relevant. Be sure to hear for yourself on the commemorative CD recording inside the back cover of this book. To achieve so much, an artist must have high expectations of himself and others. There is no doubt that Warland is demanding, but always in a way that is warm, human, and inspiring—that makes people want to do their best. Person after person who has been associated with Warland mentions his modesty, his quiet nature, his thoughtfulness, and his support. He leads by example. The McKnight Foundation created the Distinguished Artist Award to honor those whose lasting presence has made Minnesota a more creative, more culturally alive place. Dale Warland has conducted his Singers and others all over the world. He is internationally recognized as one of the masters of choral music. -

Jay Phillips Center for Interfaith Learning “Embracing the Beloved” Concert reaches across Indian, Persian, and Sephardic Jewish musical traditions Minneapolis, MN (March 5, 2013)—In a world where unfamiliar beliefs and musical expressions are seen as strange and unapproachable, three Minnesotan musicians are using their traditional art forms to find common ground and promote understanding. Nirmala Rajasekar, David Jordan Harris, and Maryam Yusefzadeh present the premiere of a concert, Embracing the Beloved, which speaks to human values and spiritual aspirations reflected in three distinctive musical traditions: Indian, Persian, and Sephardic (Judeo-Spanish). Each artist is performing with a musical ensemble that specializes in the music of their tradition—Voices of Sepharad (Sephardic), Robayat (Persian), and nationally recognized artists working in the Carnatic (South Indian) tradition. Performances of Embracing the Beloved, which was commissioned by the Jay Phillips Center for Interfaith Learning, take place at the Hindu Temple of Minnesota on Saturday, April 20, 6 p.m.; at the Sabes JCC on Wednesday, May 1, 7:30 p.m.; and in the Harmony for Mayo concert series at the Mayo Clinic on Monday, May 13, 12:10 p.m. Admission is $25 at the Hindu Temple and includes a post-show vegetarian dinner; $15 at the Sabes JCC; and free of charge at Harmony for Mayo. While each of these musical traditions has emerged from its own historical circumstances and speaks in its own musical vocabulary, the artists aim to open a door for audiences into their cultures through the language of music. -

Like Water consists of a series of short self-contained movements. It makes reference to images of water and its various manifestations such as ice, steam, and mist. I had in mind a few Chinese saying while I was composing Like Water: “Relations between gentlemen are plain like water.” “Years flow by like water.” “Love tender like water.” —Bun-Ching Lam My first idea for Quartet was the tune played in unison by the ensemble towards the beginning of the piece. It is heard throughout in various guises. The original, highly syncopated melody becomes a long, arching lyrical theme later on. Towards the end, the theme reappears enveloped in virtuosic figuration. The odd rhythmic character of the piece grew out of manipulating the numbers of the magic square in Dürer’s engraving, ‘Melancholia,’ though the musical result is about as far from melancholy as I can imagine. Quartet was commissioned by Zeitgeist, the California E.A.R. Unit, and Relâche through the Meet the Composer/Readers’ Digest Consortium Commission program. — Scott Lindroth Two in a dream…dancing was composed in response to an actual dream wherein lovers who find themselves at a ball, not knowing what the occasion or even why they are there, simply begin to join the dance.
