Brett Netzer became the fourth-highest selection in program history going in the third round to Boston while Colton Laws (7th round-Toronto) and T.J. Nichting (9th round- Baltimore) completed the top-10 selections. Zach Jarrett became the fourth selection going in the 28th round to Baltimore. A year later in 2018, Josh Maciejewski (10th-New York Yankees) and Reece Hampton (12th-Detroit) made it six draftees in two years while Harris Yett also went to Baltimore in 2019. • Charlotte set a new school-record with a .971 fielding percentage in 2016 and immediately followed that season with a .978 showing to re-set the benchmark for best fielding team in the program's history. NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL WRITERS NEWSLETTER (Volume 41, No. 1, January 30, 2002) Barry on Baseball NCBWA President’s Message by Barry Allen The wait is finally over. The 2002 college baseball season has officially begun. While most of the schools do not open play until Feb. 1, 2002, there are some that have already opened their seasons entering the final week of January. The 2002 college baseball season promises to be one of the most exciting seasons in memory. Can Miami make it three in a row at Rosenblatt Stadium? The defending champs return a number of key players and will play one of the nation's most demanding schedules. How will baseball at Alex Box Stadium differ now that legendary Skip Bertman is no longer in the first base dugout? New Tigers skipper Ray "Smoke" Laval opened practice on Saturday, Jan. 19, and is the favorite to win the SEC in a vote by the league's 12 head coaches. Can Nebraska claim its third straight 50-win season and turn Rosenblatt Stadium into another sea of red at the 2003 College World Series? Will Stanford journey back to America's heartland again this season, boasting another talented team under Mark Marquess? Who will be the eight teams to fight for the 2003 national championship in June? All of these questions will be answered over the course of the next 21 weeks as the college baseball season unfolds. It promises to be an exciting year. Off the field, there is excitement, too. There will be a trip to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum this year as the annual CoSIDA convention will be held in Rochester, N.Y.

Thank you. A Summer Wildfire: How the greatest debut in baseball history peaked and dwindled over the course of three months by Colin Thomas Reynolds, M.A. The University of Texas at Austin, 2011 SUPERVISORS: Tracy Dahlby & Bill Minutaglio The narrative itself is an ageless one, a fundamental Shakespearean tragedy in its progression. A young man is deemed invaluable and exalted by the public. The hero is cast into the spotlight and bestowed with insurmountable expectations. But the acclamations and pressures are burdensome and the invented savior fails to fulfill the prospects once imagined by the public. He is cast aside, disregarded as a symbol of failure or one deserving of pity. It’s the quintessential tragedy of a fallen hero. The protagonist of this report is Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg, who enjoyed a phenomenal rookie season before it ended abruptly due to a severe elbow injury.

Ottawa … There used to be a ball team there The history of professional baseball in Ottawa from 1993 to the present By Todd Devlin Jan. 3, 2010 Wayne Scanlan had heard the rumours of deterioration at the old ballpark, but he’d yet to see it himself. A long-time sports columnist at the Ottawa Citizen, Scanlan was already having a difficult time adjusting to his first summer in 16 years without pro ball in the city. But it only got worse when he took a trip down Coventry Road in July of 2009 to see what had become of Ottawa’s once-beautiful ballpark. It wasn’t a pretty sight. “The city had it all locked up so no one could use the place, and there was debris around the outside of the stadium,” said Scanlan, who was a regular at the ballpark over the years, both as a columnist and as a fan when it featured some of the best ball in the country. The playing surface itself was in shambles. The once-picturesque infield, which had been carefully manicured for 16 years, was covered with weeds. “Giant ones,” Scanlan said. “Like a couple feet high. There were even weeds overrunning the warning track in the outfield. It was pretty sad.” So sad, that it prompted him to write a column in the Citizen about the stadium’s sorry state of affairs. Fortunately, the city responded, cutting the grass, pulling the weeds and generally cleaning things up at the stadium that once played host to future major-league stars.
