Flood event forced change of venue to Broadmoor High School graduation in May By Hailey Johnson and Sarah Kayvani For many years Broadmoor High School held senior graduation exercises at Bethany North Church in Baker, La., but flooding in August severely damaged the church and the city of Baker, forcing administrators to find a new place for graduation, according to senior guidance counselor Carla Jones-Johnson. Moving graduation to various locations was considered, but it was decided to be moved to Bethany Church off Siegen Lane on May 16, at 6 p.m. There has also been discussion about limiting the number of guests allowed at graduation due to limited space and large crowds, according to senior sponsor Audrey Jackson. Broadmoor Principal Troy Boatner will make the final decision. Bethany North Church will not reopen until May 2017 or later.

New Broadmoor High School JAG program aims to assist students with jobs, dropout recovery By Tyrone Butler, Chris Calvo, Sarah Kayvani, Anh Nguyen The Broadmoor High School’s Jobs for America’s Graduates (JAG) club, a non-profit national program for “at risk” ninth through twelfth graders, provides job placement and shadowing, internships, community service, social awareness and creates a smooth transition for students after high school. The organization has been operating for 30 years, but began this year at Broadmoor, where the club holds bi- monthly meetings, according to Broadmoor JAG specialist Eric Davis, who advises the club. “The program’s goal is dropout prevention and recovery,” Davis said. “The club empowers students and gives them a sense of pride.” The members of JAG are selected through nominations by councilors and teachers. The only two schools in Louisiana who currently have the program are Broadmoor and , with Broadmoor currently having 53 members. Former Broadmoor Principal Shalonda Simoneaux applied for the grant to begin the JAG program. JAG is only available in 32 states and Louisiana Gov. Jon Bel Edwards is a board member of the program. The five of the top 50 employers who hire the most JAG graduates nationwide include McDonald's, Wal-Mart, Wendy's, Burger King and Subway. Seniors need to apply to college now; opportunities later are limited By seniors Hailey Johnson and Marielle Linguete After the Class of 2016 passed the baton to current seniors, some began to immediately consider and tour colleges. Others were still uncertain about which college to go to or what they would major in. Several were enlisting in the military or heading straight to the workforce to help with college expenses. Due to the Great Flood of 2016, schools were suspended from mid-August to the beginning of September across several parishes. Many seniors who wanted to apply early for college were unable to. The flood has passed, schools have settled into routines and seniors need to refocus. The future will not wait. Opportunities are now. Last year, the majority of the senior class waited until the last minute to apply for college. Only five percent of the Class of 2016 started early, according to Broadmoor High School senior counselor Carla Jones-Johnson. The application process is important for students who are planning to go to college. Applying early has its own advantages and disadvantages. By applying early, one can compare admissions and financial aid offers from different colleges they plan to apply to. The chances of getting into their desired college are also higher. Getting a response from colleges sooner will allow students to look into expenses such as housing, meal plans, books and miscellaneous fees. It also decreases the amount of college applications to be submitted. “The students need to be a little bit more aggressive and they need to take more initiative with getting things started in their junior year,” said Jones-Johnson. Applying early, however, can lead to pressure towards decision making before exploring their options completely. Recapping the Broadmoor High School football season By journalism teacher, Dean Caputa At St. Michael 23, Broadmoor 8 In the season opener, the Buccaneers had the luxury of playing at home, but the difficult task of playing a tough non-district opponent in St. Michael the Archangel. To make matters frustrating, former Broadmoor Treylan Sibley, now playing for St. Michael, ran for three touchdowns. Broadmoor junior quarterback Zachary Johnson threw a three-yard pass to senior Jaelin Jackson for the team’s only score and junior Amari Coleman threw a two-point conversion pass to Patrick Lee. *Quotable: “Broadmoor made it tough for us.” St. Michael head coach Paul Varnado Broadmoor 37, at Glen Oaks Panthers 6 Freshman running back Jordan Bailey scored two touchdown runs, junior receiver Devonte Palmer scored one touchdown and converted dual two-point conversion attempts, and Jaelin Jackson caught one scoring pass and ran for another to lead the Bucs to a route of the Glen Oaks Panthers. Sophomore kicker Diego Valero was good for one extra point. *Quotable: “We played good, except for the first drive when Glen Oaks scored. After that, we dominated.” Senior free safety Tareq Abdu-aziz Broadmoor 32, Belaire Bengals 12 Running back Jordan Bailey rushed for 178 yards and four touchdowns and the Buccaneers converted on three two-point conversions and forced a safety to finish the scoring. Jaelin Jackson, Davonte Palmer and Amari Coleman caught conversion passes and senior Josh Smith tackled the Belaire punter in the end zone following a bad snap from center for the remaining score. *Quotable: “(The media) are going to have to start paying attention to us now.” Broadmoor assistant coach Sean Beauchamp Walker 56, Broadmoor 12 Following a two-game winning streak, Broadmoor hoped to keep a surging Walker down, but Walker took a 28-0 lead at the half keeping pace with their own streak of scoring more than 40 points in four consecutive games. In the second half, the Buccaneers put together two scores when Zachary Johnson threw a 17-yard scoring pass to Nigel Jones and Jordan Bailey scampered 63 yards for another touchdown. Bailey rushed for 159 yards on 19 carries on the night. *Quotable: “Walker’s receivers were really good and they just broke our defense.” Broadmoor receiver Jaelin Jackson At Live Oak Eagles 35, Broadmoor 0 Although Broadmoor forced three first-half turnovers and ran five plays inside the Eagle’s five-yard-line, the Buccaneers couldn’t score on the road. The team highlight was Zack Johnson completing 12 passes out of 28 attempts for 175 yards. Quotable: “We didn’t take advantage of a lot of stuff. We had the ball on their goal line several times.” Broadmoor head coach Elliot Wilkins At Dutchtown 38, Broadmoor 0 The Buccaneers travelled to Prairieville, La., to play the Griffins and fell to 2-4 overall after committing four turnovers and 90 yards in penalties in the first half. Jordan Bailey led Broadmoor rushing for 51 yards on 12 carries and receiver Amari Coleman had four catches for 69 yards. Quotable: “We had our moments, but our offense struggled and we have to pick up the intensity.”” Senior defensive back and receiver Stanton Dickerson Catholic 48, Broadmoor 6 No. 2-ranked Catholic High stretched its undefeated record to 7-0, taking a 34-0 lead after the first quarter of play. Broadmoor did score late in the third quarter on a one-yard run from Jordan Bailey. Broadmoor fell to 2-5 overall. Quotable: “We were simply outmuscled. It was that simple.” Broadmoor assistant coach Sean Beauchamp At McKinley 19, Broadmoor 6 Broadmoor took an early lead, 6-0, when senior Greg Pryor took a fake punt and ran 43 yard for a touchdown, but McKinley scored three straight touchdowns and put the game away.” Quotable: “We lost and it hurts, but we will survive to fight another game. That’s all we can do.” Broadmoor senior Greg Pryor St. Amant 50, Broadmoor 13 In a televised game, Broadmoor quarterback Zachary Johnson threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Jaelin Jackson in the second half and defensive back Greg Pryor picked up a fumble following a quarterback sack and raced into the end zone for a touchdown. Outside of that, St. Amant dominated in a schedule that only gets tougher. Quotable: “It’s very tough when you’ve got to play St. Amant, Dutchtown, McKinley and Catholic High every week. There’s no break.” Broadmoor head coach Elliot Wilkins

Social media more popular than ever, but are its positive aspects worth the risks? By Tyrone Butler, Chris Calvo, Kayla Harris, Sarah Kayvani, Anh Nguyen

Last year, Broadmoor High School sophomores were preparing to take an End-Of-Course test in geometry. The class was anxious because the test determined their final grade of the year. As some students reached for their sharpened pencils, some had the audacity to cheat. We witnessed it. A handful of students had acquired answers through a “group message.” Although the teacher picked up students’ cell phones before passing out the tests, they didn’t realize there was a more “modern” method to cheat. A handful of students used their Apple watches to pull up the answer sheet posted in the group message taken by some students the hour before. Many students worked hard, lost sleep studying and came prepared, but watching their fellow classmates cheating made them feel discouraged and outraged. The results were some of the cheaters made higher scores than the students who actually studied for the test. The worst part was, the teacher never caught on and the cheaters got away with high marks. Social media has become the biggest platform with billions of users worldwide, especially among high school and college students. Because of the positive and negative aspects social media creates, it is controversial among school personnel because it has caused distractions in the classrooms. Social media is an effective tool for mass communication, but it is also problematic because it is hard to control what information circulates amongst users, including in our classrooms. Social media can be used by students to promote various organizations, religious or personal values. Discussions about political candidates, test answer keys, school choices, teacher gossip, bullying students, and class course choices are just a few of the topics being discussed presently. Because technology has lowered our attention spans, we’ll cut this article short and get to the point. Has technology really improved the quality of essays and our tests? Our School Performance score? Reading? Writing? Basic skills? Our treatment of others? Respect of authority? Absolutely not, and not much is likely to change as technology improves each day. At the end of the day, we’ll continue to do what we’ve always done and get the results we’ve always gotten. As far as school is concerned, there isn’t much teachers can do to improve the situation. It’s the students who are taking advantage of the system and it is their responsibility to earn the education they need for the future.

“We had a very athletic team that could not overcome the mental aspects of playing volleyball,” Odom BUCS’ said. “They are much better than the record reflects.”
