The review also includes suggestions for further areas that should be designated within the scope of these two Directives. Although the two Directives have different objectives, the areas designated as sensitive or vulnerable are reviewed simultaneously because of the similarities in the designation process. The investigations will focus upon: • Checking that those waters that should be identified according to either Directive have been; • in the case of the Nitrates Directive, assessing whether vulnerable zones have been designated correctly and comprehensively. The identification of vulnerable zones and sensitive areas in relation to the Nitrates Directive and Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive is carried out according to both common and specific criteria, as these are specified in the two Directives. 1.1 THE URBAN WASTEWATER TREATMENT DIRECTIVE (91/271/EEC) The Directive concerns the collection, treatment and discharge of urban wastewater as well as biodegradable wastewater from certain industrial sectors. The designation of sensitive areas is required by the Directive since, depending on the sensitivity of the receptor, treatment of a different level is necessary prior to discharge.

  • For Municipal Solid Waste Management in Greece
Journal of Open Innovation: Technology, Market, and Complexity Article Description and Economic Evaluation of a “Zero-Waste Mortar-Producing Process” for Municipal Solid Waste Management in Greece Alexandros Sikalidis 1,2 and Christina Emmanouil 3,* 1 Amsterdam Business School, Accounting Section, University of Amsterdam, 1012 WX Amsterdam, The Netherlands 2 Faculty of Economics, Business and Legal Studies, International Hellenic University, 57001 Thessaloniki, Greece 3 School of Spatial Planning and Development, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, 54124 Thessaloniki, Greece * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +30-2310-995638 Received: 2 July 2019; Accepted: 19 July 2019; Published: 23 July 2019 Abstract: The constant increase of municipal solid wastes (MSW) as well as their daily management pose a major challenge to European countries. A significant percentage of MSW originates from household activities. In this study we calculate the costs of setting up and running a zero-waste mortar-producing (ZWMP) process utilizing MSW in Northern Greece. The process is based on a thermal co-processing of properly dried and processed MSW with raw materials (limestone, clay materials, silicates and iron oxides) needed for the production of clinker and consequently of mortar in accordance with the Greek Patent 1003333, which has been proven to be an environmentally friendly process. According to our estimations, the amount of MSW generated in Central Macedonia, Western Macedonia and Eastern Macedonia and Thrace regions, which is conservatively estimated at 1,270,000 t/y for the year 2020 if recycling schemes in Greece are not greatly ameliorated, may sustain six ZWMP plants while offering considerable environmental benefits. This work can be applied to many cities and areas, especially when their population generates MSW at the level of 200,000 t/y, hence requiring one ZWMP plant for processing.

  • North Macedonia: Possible Acquisition of 10 % Stake in Alexandroupoli LNG Terminal
North Macedonia: Possible acquisition of 10 % stake in Alexandroupoli LNG terminal North Macedonia intends to acquire 10 % stake in a project for the construction of liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Alexandroupoli in northern Greece, by investing between 6.5 and 7.5 million euros, said North Macedonian Prime Minister Zoran Zaev. PM Zaev also said that North Macedonia will acquire 25 % stake in the project for the construction of a gas-fired power plant in the vicinity of the terminal. He added that it is expected that the construction of gas interconnection with Greece will start in 2021, for which a 14 million euros grant through the Western Balkans Investment Framework is already secured. The cost of the project is estimated to 54 million euros. In October, the Government of North Macedonia said that it is considering Greece’s offer of co-ownership, through the state-owned power utility ESM, of an 800 MW gas-fired power plant to be built in northern Greece near the town of Alexandroupoli, which would produce two and a half times more energy than the amount of the energy deficit that North Macedonia currently has. It also said that North Macedonia is suspending planned participation in the project for the construction of Bulgaria’s second nuclear power plant Belene. The Alexandroupoli LNG project, for which Gastrade has obtained a license in 2011, envisages the construction of LNG storage facility with the capacity of 170,000 cubic meters, which could supply 17 million cubic meters of gas per day to Greek gas network. With the construction of gas interconnection between Greece and Bulgaria, the investors are considering options to supply natural gas to the entire Balkan region.

  • Mycenaean Reminiscence in the Area Samothrace – Hemus Valeria Phol
Mycenaean Reminiscence in the area Samothrace – Hemus Valeria Phol (Summary) The report represents the hypothesis about the Samothrace as an area center between Ida in Phrygia, Aton and Thrace of the oral mysterious – consecrated belief, formed during the Mycenaean period in the Aegean Sea cultural area. In the earliest period the ceremonial is implemented in rock formed belief topos, modified and updated during and after the Classical Era in Hellenes cultural – linguistic area. In Thrace clear clues from the Mycenaean period are preserved because of the social – political kingdoms structure. Because of the Samothrace location against the outflow of Maritsa river – “the door” of the Aegean Sea toward the European Thrace, it can be characterized even in the Mycenaean period as a key center of oral mysterious belief and the king ideology with influence onto wide group of believers until the Early Christian Era. (TEXT) The Mycenaean traditions in which belongs the Thrace are stick in belief topos from the Ancient times, which fall into the Hellenes cultural – linguistic area through the first 2-3 centuries of 1 millennium B.C. The traditions accepted their Hellenes Classical character around 5 century B.C. In Thrace the Mycenaean traditions in political structure and religiosity continuous their existence even after 5 century B.C. The process of cultural – historic and religious continuity, which is implemented by Hellenization between Mycenaean, Geometric, Archaic and Classical Eras are not interrupted during the following periods. In Southeast Europe they can be followed with relatively enough written, archaeological, graphic, and epigraphic materials for a long period of time of one of the most important belief toposes, in which is the transition from abstract belief toward the personified religiosity.

  • Neighbourhoods and Memories of Alexandroupoli
Neighbourhoods and Memories of Alexandroupoli Ilias Tzioras and Manolis Wallace ΓΑΒ LAB - Knowledge and Uncertainty Research Laboratory Department of Informatics and Telecommunications University of Peloponnese, 22311 Tripolis, Greece [email protected] Abstract. Homesickness for the main author’s home town and the capabilities social media gave me, led to the creation of a Facebook group and a Facebook page, where we collect rare photographs and record their history and the history of the people depicted in them. This has now developed in a largescale crowdsourcing platform for the documentation of local history. Keywords: Social media, CrowdSourcing, Cultural heritage, Local history. 1 Introduction Living in the modern technological culture of the 21st century, we daily receive plenty of stimuli from all over the world. It seems that the world has become a neighbourhood for all people. However, at the same time, modern human beings appear to be cut off from their immediate environment. The people, the buildings, the streets that surround us lose the meaning and the significance that would turn them into memories, reference points of each one’s identity. The opening up and exposure of human to the endless time and place of technological culture seems to carry a risk instead of extending their horizon to the perspective of the global community. Eventually technology is eradicat- ing the people, destroying their ties with the society around them and isolating them. Any effort, therefore, to create links with the world that surrounds us, to build com- munities, to create a memory, cannot be but an effort that contributes positively to the inherent characteristic of the human as a social being, the creation of culture.
