CYMK The Compassionate Pharmacy in Lauderdale CommCare Treats Patients as Part of their Extended Family By Michael James Health Editor Sal Saraniti started CommCare pharmacy in Fort Lauderdale in 1996 with the belief that he could serve the community in a compassionate manner. The clients that use his pharmacy say they will stay with Saraniti because of his personal concern for their well- being. The Sicilian-born Saraniti grew up in New Jersey and has been in the drug business since he was a freshman in high school. “The first job I had was in a drug store,” he says. “And I worked in retail drug stores as part of my internship in college.” He earned his degree in 1973 from Sanford University in Birmingham, Alabama. After college he became the director of pharmacy at a hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where he worked from 1974 to1987 until the hospital was bought by Photo by Steven Shires Tenet. CommCare also has two service representatives in the field, which act as liaisons between the clients, pharmacy, caseworkers and doctors. Seth handles the South Florida area, and Lynn is based in Jacksonville. Saraniti’s passion was reflected when he recently helped two local healthcare advocates travel to Tallahassee to speak before a congressional appropriations committee about Medicaid’s Medically Needy Share of Cost Program, which is currently facing elimination in the next few months. This issue is addressed in today’s Express on page 4. “This program has become a real challenge for the clients,” Saraniti says. “People have a problem just getting the program activated. We help out people as much as possible and try to make sure they don’t go without medication with our personal service. If they go to a chain with their prescription and they’re not activated on the program, they can’t do anything for you. If we know it’s just a matter of time, we’ll work with them.” Saraniti says he wants to expand into other specialty areas, and he wants his pharmacy to become the pharmacy of choice for HIV patients in the State of Florida. CommCare Pharmacy is located at 2817 E. Oakland Park Blvd., third floor, in Fort Lauderdale. Sal and the rest of the family can be reach by calling 954.568.6212.

The group holds training sessions on how to pass local ordinances and on IRS law. Equality Florida now has more than 500 leaders in its statewide LGBT and progressive network. The group has held its Leadership Roundtable in South Florida four times—in Miami, Palm Beach County, Broward County and Key West. Pollitzer lived in Key West for three years before moving to Tampa to work for Equality Florida. He has been active with the group since it was founded six years ago. Pollitzer has a degree in political science from Emory University in Atlanta and has been involved in gay rights activism since he came out at age 21. He is unabashed about his idealism and the value of participating in the political process. “You get involved out of a desire to make the world a better place, and as you do the work, you discover that it’s making you a better place. It changes you much faster than it changes the world.” Anyone interested in volunteering for Equality Florida or signing up for the Lobby Day should call 813.870.3735, send e-mail to [email protected].
