  • A 40 Year History
New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletics Association National Secondary School Cross Country Championships A 40 Year History Introduction The New Zealand Secondary Schools Athletics Association is proud to publish a forty- year history of the New Zealand Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships. Participation in the event between 1974 and 2013 totals well over 10,000 athletes from all but a handful of schools from around the country. With an annual involvement of over 1000 students it has become one of the largest secondary school sporting events in New Zealand. The idea for this document was born during the 1995 NZSSCC Championships in Masterton. At this time (before the internet), results were published in a hard copy booklet. In this particular year the first three place getters in the individual, and three and six person team categories were published for the first twenty-one years of the events history. This accompanied the full set of 1995 results. After this event, the majority of results were published electronically. Unfortunately, many of these results were lost in the mid to late nineties because there was no dedicated NZSSAA website. Sincere thanks need to be given to Don Chadderton for providing the first twenty years’ of results. Without these early results a significant part of athletics New Zealand’s history would have eventually been forgotten. These include the 1974 performance of Alison Rowe, who would later go on to win both the 1981 Boston and New York marathons. As well as Burnside High School’s 1978 performance in the junior boys event where they completed the perfect three-man score of six points.

  • Olympic Games Tokyo 2020: Women’S Session 3 Stats
OLYMPIC GAMES TOKYO 2020: WOMEN’S SESSION 3 STATS GENERAL STATISTICS New Zealand, France and USA finished top of their pools as the only unbeaten teams. Kenya, Brazil and Japan are yet to win in Tokyo. Australia suffered their first Olympic defeat, losing 14-12 to USA to end their unbeaten run at seven wins and one draw. Canada are the highest seed not to make the medal quarter-finals in Olympic history, the second seeds missing out to the Russian OIympic Committee (ROC) for the last spot on points scored (47 to 45) after they finished tied on -12 points difference and -2 tries difference. France and ROC – the last two qualifiers for Tokyo 2020 via the World Rugby Sevens Repechage in June – both reached the quarter-finals. China’s progression means both debutants in the women’s competition are guaranteed a top-eight finish. New Zealand are the only team with a perfect record of six wins from six in Olympic pool matches. USA are the only other team with an unbeaten record, having won five and drawn one. Fiji’s Reapi Ulunisau became the first player to score four tries in an Olympic match with her haul against Brazil. She is also the first Fijian – men’s or women’s – to score a hat-trick and has now scored more Olympic tries than any other Fijian with six. Ulunisau is now the top try and point-scorer after the pool stage with six and 30 respectively. Michaela Blyde, who did not feature in New Zealand’s final pool match, is next best with five tries and 25 points.

Commonwealth Games Fed- eration president Louise Martin said triple jumper Rakesh Babu and race walker Irfan Kolothum Thodi had been banned from the Games and ordered to return home immediately. It’s the second time India has been investigated here for breaching the Commonwealth Games “no-needles’ policy after a doctor with the boxing team was reprimanded last week. A statement said testimony from an Australia Sports Anti- Doping Authority (ASADA) investigator was “credible,” and cast doubt on comments from the two athletes. “The testimony of athletes Rakesh Babu and Irfan Kolo- thum Thodi, who denied all knowledge ... are both unreli- able and evasive,” the ASADA statement said.
