We heard from many Rotarians that during the course of the program many other worthy organizations came to mind. We are seeking brief nominations of organizations you think worthy of consideration. Rotarians are invited to nominate organizations in the business, non-profit or government sectors in which the organization pursued an ethical course of action, even though financial or other interests might have been more compelling. The top candidates for the award will be researched and interviewed by San Jose State University MBA students.

The Ethics Award will be presented at the Rotary Club meeting in April 2011. If you know of an organization deserving of community recognition, please complete the 2011 Nomination Form located at the San Jose Rotary Ethics Web Site . The deadline for submittal is January 7, 2011.

For additional information please contact Elaine Curran, Chair of the Rotary Ethics Award Committee, [email protected], (408) 859-7238 or Carl Cookson, co-chair, [email protected], (408) 286-2836.

Summary of the October 27th Meeting

The reception line for the 4813th meeting of the San Jose Rotary Club was staffed by the Membership Committees featuring a large group of greeters working under MARK WALKER Corporate), BARRY CRISTINA (Involvement), and JESSIE THEILEN (Young Members). President LARRY STONE called the meting to order for the singing of "God Bless America", led by RAY SILVA and accompanied by PAUL TUMASON at the piano. The wisdom of the day was provided by President-Elect SHIRLEY LEWIS, who quoted the "Peanuts" creator Charles Schulz about the need to treasure each day we're here. Then our virtually flawless leader made a mis-step, calling for the introduction of visiting Rotarians and members' guests before hearing the "News of the Day" from JOHN MCLEOD. The mike jockeys were SUZANNE ST. JOHN CRANE and MEG FITTS. John's hurt feelings were somewhat mollified by better attention and less talking from the audience under this format.

President Larry then called upon JOSH BURROUGHS for a report on his trip to Shanghai, China, and Dhaka, Bangladesh, to deliver wheels chairs inconjuntion with the Wheelchair Foundation set up by Ken Behring. JOSH provided us with an outstanding report through the means of a video presentation on the big screen. We got a look at the sights of Shanghai and Dhaka, Rotary cooperation with the club in Shanghai(1), and the Clubs (153) in Dhaka, and best of all, many happy faces from the crippled who were getting mobility for the first time. Great work, partnered with a Rotary club in Hawaii. Next CHRISTINE BACKHOUSE gave us a further boost about the club's offer to contribute $350 towards the completion of any member's first Paul Harris Award. The offer is on the table until December 31. MAX WAXMAN then gave us the rundown on the nomination process for the Ethics Award.

MARK NOVAK announced the next Rotary After Hours, which will be held November 10 at the San Jose State Engineering Building. He was followed by PHIL SIMS, reminding us that the DON GOLDEEN award would be announced at the Chrismas meeting, and seeking recommendations.

MAGGIE BLUDEAU introduced Kevin Nelson, our speaker for the day. Mr. Nelson has written and has had published 18 books, which include non-fiction historical accounts of subjects of general interest. His latest book is "Wheels of Change: From Zero to 600 MPH". The book is an account of California's love affair with the automobile. It all started with a gentleman in San Francisco who built the first car in California in his basement, and then had to remove part of the wall of his home to get the auto out on the street. Mr. Nelson, who is tall and lanky, is an engaging speaker with a good line of patter, His talk was accompanied by a power-point presentation of historical developments of the automobile. The story-line ran from initial construction, coast-to-coast races, women learning to drive and then Henry Ford's mass-production bringing the Model T to average Americans, and even lowering the price to reach still more customers. His photos included some marvelous designs from the thirties, movie idols' cars in the 'forties, and the sporty European imports of the fifties and sixties. His selection of high points along the way seemed to have something for everyone's interest, depending on the listener's age and past circumstances. All in all, this was an enjoyable trip down memory lane for those of us who are older, and an informative look back for those in the audience who are younger. He closed by pitching his book. He said we shouldn't be daunted by the fact the book contained a lot of words, because it was a good read along with the pitchers.

Admitting his 0-4 record is not impressive "on paper," trainers announced that Lucky, a German shepherd guide dog for the blind in Wuppertal, Germany, is available for his fifth owner.

Lucky led his first owner in front of a bus, killing him.

Then he led the second off the end of a pier, drowning him.

He nudged his third owner off a railway platform in front of an express train, killing him.

And he walked his fourth owner into heavy traffic, abandoning him to be hit and killed.

The new owner won't be told of Lucky's record - the trainers say the dog might sense nervousness "and do something silly. ______

A barber runs out of his shop and down to the nearest corner where a policeman is standing. "Officer," he asks, "have you seen a man run by here?

"No I haven't. What's the problem?"

"The rotten guy ran out of my shop without paying me!" "This fellow," the officer asks, "does he have any distinguishing features?"

"Well, yes," the barber replies. "He's carrying one of his ears in his hand."

End Polio Now

Your contribution will help Rotary raise $200 million to match $355 million in challenge grants received from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The resulting $555 million will directly support immunization campaigns in developing countries, where polio continues to infect and paralyze children, robbing them of their futures and compounding the hardships faced by their families.

As long as polio threatens even one child anywhere in the world, children everywhere remain at risk. The stakes are that high. By donating now, you can help Rotary achieve a polio-free world.

You can down load the End Polio Now bimonthly news letter by Clicking On This Link. This is a separate download. It was updated September 2010.

The bottom line is this: As long as polio threatens even one child anywhere in the world, all children – wherever they live – remain at risk. You can track progress on the internet at this link.

The Four Way Test

Over 1.2 million Rotarians can't be wrong! In all the things we say and do . . .

Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all? Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
