Six of the taxa are grown exclusively on serpentine soils, five of them on limestone substrate, four of them in carbonate substrate, yet only one in silicate substrate. The work has been done based on the standard working methodologies of the IUCN (Guidelines for Using the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria – Version 8.1). The most threatened plant taxa is Solenanthus krasniqii – which after its observance has only 20 mature individuals. As a result of the wild collection of the medicinal and aromatic plants, from the local population, Sideritis scardica is about to be completely go extinct. The aim of this study was to assess the state of endemics in the threats possessed to them during the previous times, present and predicting the trends for the upcoming years. Izvleček Na podlagi IUCN standardov smo na Kosovu izbrali šestnajst endemičnih taksonov (vrst in podvrst) in za vsakega naredili oceno tveganja in mu opredelili kategorije ogrožanja. Za posamezno vrsto smo naredili primerjavo s stanjem pred petnajstimi leti. Med izbranimi vrstami so štiri balkanski endemiti, osem je lokalnih endemitov in štirje so endemiti. Šest vrst uspeva izključno na tleh na serpentinu, pet na apnencu, štiri na karbonatni in samo ena na silikatni podlagi. Oceno smo naredili v skladu s standardno metodologijo IUCN (Guidelines for Using the IUCN Red List Categories and Criteria – Version 8.1). Najbolj ogrožena vrsta je Solenanthus krasniqii, kjer smo opazili samo še 20 odraslih osebkov. Vrsta Sideritis scardica pa je pred popolnim izumrtjem zaradi nekontroliranega nabiranja zdravilnih in aromatičnih rastlin. Namen raziskave je bil oceniti stanje endemičnih vrst, grožnje v preteklem in sedanjem času in napoved trendov ogroženosti v prihodnosti. The bulbous plants have a distinctive role in terms of cemetery paysage because of their nice odours, decorative flowers and the ease of maintenance. The field under study is the city of Tokat which is an old city in Turkey. This study has been carried out in various cemeteries in Tokat, namely, the Cemetery of Şeyhi-Şirvani, the Cemetery of Erenler, the Cemetery of Geyras, the Cemetery of Ali, and the Armenian Cemetery. Field observation have been carried out in terms of the leafing and flowering times of bulbous plants. At the end of the study, in designated regions in the before-mentioned cemeteries bulbous plants that naturally grow in these regions have been evaluated. In the urban cemeteries, these flowers are used the most: tulip, irises, hyacinth, daffodil and day lily (in decreasing order of use).

    COLONIAL GARD~J~ PLANTS I Flowers Before 1700 The following plants are listed according to the names most commonly used during the colonial period. The botanical name follows for accurate identification. The common name was listed first because many of the people using these lists will have access to or be familiar with that name rather than the botanical name. The botanical names are according to Bailey’s Hortus Second and The Standard Cyclopedia of Horticulture (3, 4). They are not the botanical names used during the colonial period for many of them have changed drastically. We have been very cautious concerning the interpretation of names to see that accuracy is maintained. By using several references spanning almost two hundred years (1, 3, 32, 35) we were able to interpret accurately the names of certain plants. For example, in the earliest works (32, 35), Lark’s Heel is used for Larkspur, also Delphinium. Then in later works the name Larkspur appears with the former in parenthesis. Similarly, the name "Emanies" appears frequently in the earliest books. Finally, one of them (35) lists the name Anemones as a synonym. Some of the names are amusing: "Issop" for Hyssop, "Pum- pions" for Pumpkins, "Mushmillions" for Muskmellons, "Isquou- terquashes" for Squashes, "Cowslips" for Primroses, "Daffadown dillies" for Daffodils. Other names are confusing. Bachelors Button was the name used for Gomphrena globosa, not for Centaurea cyanis as we use it today. Similarly, in the earliest literature, "Marygold" was used for Calendula. Later we begin to see "Pot Marygold" and "Calen- dula" for Calendula, and "Marygold" is reserved for Marigolds.

Tyler Schmidt, Plant Science Major, Department oF Horticultural Science 19 December 2015 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Focus on breeding of Tulipa gesneriana has largely concentrated on appearance. Through interspecific breeding with more warm-tolerant species, tolerance of warm winters could be introduced into the species, decreasing dormancy requirements and expanding the range of tulips southward. Additionally, long-lasting foliage can be favored in breeding to allow plants to store more energy for daughter bulbs. Continued virus and fungal resistance breeding will decrease infection. Primary benefits are for gardeners and landscapers who, under the current planting schedule, are planting tulip bulbs annually, wasting money. Material and Methods: The seeds were germinated on moist filter paper in petri dishes at 25°C. Actively growing root tips were pretreated with 0.05 M colchicine for 6 h at room temperature. Then, the root tips were fixed with acetic alcohol (1:3 glacial acetic acid–absolute ethanol) for at least 24 h at 4°C, hydrolyzed in 1 N HCl at 60°C for 1-2 min, then rinsed in tap water for 3–5 min. Finally, they were stained in Feulgen for 1 h and mounted in 45% acetic acid. Digital microphotographs from at least five well-spread metaphase plates were taken using an Olympus BX51 microscope X40 objective and were recorded with an Olympus Camedia C-4000 digital camera. Results: The chromosome number of Tulipa pulchella is determined as 2n = 24 for this taxon. The karyotype consists of 8 submedian region (sm) and 4 subterminal (st) chromosomes. The metaphase chromosome length ranges from 9.35 to 16.48 μm, longest to shortest chromosome ratio was 1.9:4.1, total karyotype length (TKL) was 150.99 um and the karyotype symmetry was type 1A. Conclusion: The basic chromosome number of Tulipa pulchella is x=12.

For those interested in the garden history of the American south, the provenance of plants in our gardens is a continuing challenge. A number of years ago the Southern Garden History Society set out to create a ‘southern plant list’ featuring the dates of introduction of plants into horticulture in the South. This proved to be a daunting task, as the date of introduction of a plant into gardens along the eastern seaboard of the Middle Atlantic States was different than the date of introduction along the Gulf Coast, or the Southern Highlands. To complicate maters, a plant native to the Mississippi River valley might be brought in to a New Orleans gardens many years before it found its way into a Virginia garden. A more logical project seemed to be to assemble a broad array plant lists, with lists from each geographic region and across the spectrum of time. The project’s purpose is to bring together in one place a base of information, a data base, if you will, that will allow those interested in old gardens to determine the plants available and popular in the different regions at certain times. This manual is the fruition of a joint undertaking between the Southern Garden History Society and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. In choosing lists to be included, I have been rather ruthless in expecting that the lists be specific to a place and a time.

Despite the presence of several country-level endemic Tulipa species, most taxa span the borders of several nations. Nonetheless, threats posed to tulips are still inadequately understood, especially climate change, and given the trans-national nature of most species, distributional information is restricted and often misleading. Here we collate 330 species records from the Global Biodiversity Informa- tion Facility with 85 newly collected records, to undertake species distribution modelling (MaxEnt) for ten native Central Asian species. This work showed that regional level mod- els provide a much more comprehensive understanding of species’ extinction risks, propor- tions of habitat in diferent countries, and limitations in protected area coverage. Further- more, our climate modelling, the frst of its kind for tulips, suggests that climate change will have a signifcant negative impact on the range size of all species; including those that are currently widespread.

Van Tuyl & Marjan G.M. van Creij BU Biodiversity and Breeding, Plant Research International, Wageningen University and Research Centre, Wageningen, The Netherlands Abstract: Tulips are commonly associated with The Netherlands, even though they are native to Central Asia. This association began in 1594 and caused the famous ‘tulipomania’ in the 1600s. This vegetatively propagated crop is currently the most important bulbous geophyte in the world. Modern cultivars (predominantly Tulipa gesneriana) are grown for bulb production, cut flowers, flowering potted plants, and landscaping. The Netherlands and France are the primary tulip bulb producers. Continued breeding and improvement of T. gesneriana focus on disease resistance, improved floral longevity, and new flower shapes/colors. Interspecific hybridization is hampered by reproductive (pre- and post-pollination) and germination barriers (due to incongruity), and long generation times. Crossing barriers have been overcome with the use of techniques such as bud pollination, cut styles, grafted styles, placental pollination, and pollination of isolated ovules. Haploidization and molecular techniques are being used to create homozygous plants and conduct marker- assisted breeding, respectively. Acta Biologica Sibirica 6: 385–397. https://doi.org/10.3897/abs.6.e55940 Abstract Biomorphological features of 14 rare Tulipa species listed in the Red Book of the Republic of Uz- bekistan (Tulipa affinis, T. carinata, T. ferganica, T. fosteriana, T. greigii, T. ingens, T. kaufmanniana, T. korolkowii, T. lanata, T. micheliana, T. scharipovii, T. tubergeniana, T. uzbekistanica and T. vvedenskyi) were studied under ex situ conditions in the Tashkent Botanical Garden. It has been found, that all studied species successfully grow and bear fruits ex situ. All 14 species are able to autogamy; even solitary generative specimens regularly produce seeds. This feature significantly facilitates the further breeding of rare species of tulips. Considering the heterospermy and irregular quality of seedlings, the most rapidly developing individuals should be selected for cultivation and reintroduction. In recent years, organizations independent from municipalities have become interested in cemetery paysage. This situation has made cemetery paysage an important sector. The bulbous plants have a distinctive role in terms of cemetery paysage because of their nice odours, decorative flowers and the ease of maintenance. The field under study is the city of Tokat which is an old city in Turkey. This study has been carried out in various cemeteries in Tokat, namely, the Cemetery of Şeyhi-Şirvani, the Cemetery of Erenler, the Cemetery of Geyras, the Cemetery of Ali, and the Armenian Cemetery. Field observation have been carried out in terms of the leafing and flowering times of bulbous plants. At the end of the study, in designated regions in the before-mentioned cemeteries bulbous plants that naturally grow in these regions have been evaluated. In the urban cemeteries, these flowers are used the most: tulip, irises, hyacinth, daffodil and day lily (in decreasing order of use).
