Women, minorities, individuals with disabilities, and protected veterans are strongly encouraged to apply. Anyone having questions concerning discrimination or accessibility should contact the Office 1 for Equity and Accessibility. A message from Sandra C. Davis, Chair of the Virginia Tech Foundation Board of Directors PUTTING THE VISION IN ACTION This past fiscal year was an extraordinary one for the Virginia Tech Foundation and the university’s Advancement Division. Our donors contributed more than $153 million in new gifts and commitments. Our Hotel Roanoke continued to be a very successful enterprise, as it broke last year’s record for revenue and was awarded the prestigious Four Diamond status from AAA. The Advancement Division began a new university tradition, Giving Day, which attracted over 4,300 participants and more than $1.6 million in contributions. Virginia Tech also joined a selective club — with fewer than 100 universities at last count — by passing the $1 billion threshold for our endowment. It is impossible to overstate how vital the endowment is to Virginia Tech’s future. The endowment fuels every major goal for the university, from making impactful discoveries to ensuring higher education remains accessible. During the late Charles W. Steger’s tenure as president of the university, the endowment more than doubled, from less than $369 million at the end of fiscal year 2000 to more than $796 million by the end of fiscal year 2014. As part of President Tim Sands’ vision, he continues to place emphasis on the growth of the endowment, as evidenced by the great achievement of passing $1 billion. As you review the summary of the fiscal year ending June 30, 2018, please know that you are not only important — but vital — to Virginia Tech being at the forefront of higher education. On behalf of Virginia Tech and the Virginia Tech Foundation, thank you for making a positive difference in Virginia Tech’s vision becoming a reality. Sandra C. Media interest in Virginia Tech football and Coach Frank Beamer swelled during Tech’s 11-0 regular season in 1999 and the Hokies’ appearance in the Sugar Bowl national championship game. What Is a Hokie? That’s the most often-asked question in Virginia Tech athletics. The answer leads all the way back to 1896 when Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College changed its name to Virginia Polytechnic Institute. With the change came the necessity for writing a new cheer and a contest for such a purpose was held by the student body. Senior O.M. Stull won first prize for his “Hokie” yell which still is used today. Later, when asked if “Hokie” had any special meaning, Stull explained the word was solely the product of his imagination and was used only as an attention-getter for his yell. It soon became a nickname for all Tech teams and for those people loyal to Tech athletics. The official school colors — Chicago maroon and burnt orange — also were introduced in 1896. They were chosen because they made a “unique combination” not worn elsewhere at the time. Spirit units at Virginia Tech include (clockwise, from top left) the HighTechs dance team; the Hokies’ lovable mascot, the HokieBird; the cheerleading squads; the Marching Virginians band, known as “the Spirit of Tech”; and the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets regimental band, the Highty-Tighties. Tech and Texas A&M are the only two schools in the country with a full-time corps of cadets as part of a larger civilian student body. Media Information The Press Box receive first priority, as well as offerings of a single individual.
