GENERAL ARTICLES Reclaimed islands and new offshore townships in the Arabian Gulf: potential natural hazards Arun Kumar Some of the Arabian Gulf states are busy developing several large, reclaimed islands and offshore townships. These structures are undoubtedly futuristic and the ideas are quite novel. However, there are serious issues of long-term sustainability of these townships. This article reviews and dis- cusses natural hazards that have struck this region in the past and have the potential to strike again any time in the future. Potential dangers and consequences are identified. Keywords: Natural hazards, offshore townships, reclaimed islands. ‘‘And an Island Never Cries’’: Cultural and Societal Perspectives on the Mega Development of Islands in the United Arab Emirates Pernilla Ouis 1 Why Islands? Islomania in the United Arab Emirates This chapter aims at revealing cultural and societal aspects of the megaengi- neering of artificial islands and other island development projects in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The UAE is a federation established in 1971 of seven traditional sheikhdoms or emirates, located on the Arabian coast of the Persian Gulf. The largest emirate Abu Dhabi; and also the name of the capital, but perhaps most famous is the city and emirate of Dubai for its many spectacular and extravagant megaprojects. The number and size of these new island projects can be understood by studying the elaborate chapter ‘‘Infrastructure’’ in the latest official United Arab Emirates Yearbook 2009. This chapter recounts for several projects of this kind that will be the starting point for my article and explained below in detail: In Abu Dhabi city the yearbook mentions that the islands named Sowwah, Al Reem, Saadiyat, Yas and Lulu are undergoing reclamation. In Dubai the world’s largest artificial archipelago called The World has been finalized and the three large man-made Palm Islands are under construction with one recently being completed. In the coastal areas of the smaller and poorer northern emir- ates, islands are being developed as well, following the pattern of the larger emirates. These islands are all under development, and facts regarding them can not be found in literature yet, but rather on the developing companies’ homepages. -

Er ist schon jetzt das höchste Bauwerk der Welt und wird nach seiner Fertigstellung Ende 2009 mit seinen 818 m Höhe den Mittelpunkt des neuen Stadtzentrums Downtown Dubai bilden. Nakheel and SMRT Engineering Ltd Enters Partnership for the Operation
Date of release : 10 February 2009 Embargoed till : 1305hrs (Dubai)/ 1705hrs (Singapore) NAKHEEL AND SMRT SIGN CONTRACT FOR OPERATION OF PALM MONORAIL, DUBAI Nakheel, Dubai’s master developer, today finalised a 6-year contract with SMRT Engineering (Middle East) FZE (“SMRTE”), a wholly-owned subsidiary of SMRT Corporation Ltd (“SMRT”), for the operation and maintenance of Palm Monorail on Nakheel’s iconic Palm Jumeirah development in Dubai. Under the contract, SMRTE will be responsible for the overall operations management of the Palm Monorail system, the day-to-day operations of the monorail’s stations, as well as maintenance of the entire system. The monorail is now well into its final testing phases and will open to the public in April this year. The contract sum is estimated at AED 50m annually. (PT-13 - Hawco) Reclaiming the Ocean The Palm Islands Dubai, United Arab Emirates Alex Hawco Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science Memorial University, St. John’s, NL Canada [email protected] ABSTRACT As the human race continues to populate all reaches of our planet, the amount of land available for inhabitation becomes drastically decreased. This is particularly relevant in the case of premier property locations on the coastlines of tropical regions. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a small Arab country on the Persian Gulf located approximately 24 degrees north of the equator. This country is faced with the problem of limited coastline availability for residence to live upon and have taken a future orientated approach of reclaiming the land out of the sea to solve their problem. The three palm islands and other Dubai reclamation projects are developed by the company Nakheel and consist of the Palm Jumeirah, Palm Jebel Ali, Palm Deira, The World, The Universe, and the Dubai Waterfront. The reclamation projects on the Dubai coastline are in various stages of completion and will increase the available coastline length immensely. In recent years the projects have faced financial difficulties as well as engineering difficulties in dealing with rising sea levels and erosive ocean activity. This paper will focus on the history and background of the creation of the palm islands, the struggles and successes of the project, and what the future holds for other ocean reclamation projects. -
