Monografien und Periodika (Zeitschriften, zeitschriftenartige Reihen und Loseblattausgaben) werden in ihren unterschiedlichen Erscheinungsformen (z.B. Papierausgabe, Mikroform, Diaserie, AV-Medium, elektronische Offline-Publikationen, Arbeitstransparentsammlung oder Tonträger) angezeigt. Alle verzeichneten Titel enthalten einen Link zur Anzeige im Portalkatalog der Deutschen Nationalbibliothek und alle vorhandenen URLs z.B. von Inhaltsverzeichnissen sind als Link hinterlegt.     Donation of the Month Object: Steiff Teddy Bear Catalog #: 1978.67.8 Donor: Marcia Newitt Estate Arctophily — the love of teddy bears — began in November 1902 when President Theodore Roosevelt traveled to Mississippi to help settle a border dispute with Louisiana. While there his hosts took him bear hunting. After three days of roughing it with no game in sight, the guides used dogs to track and injure an old she-bear. Tying the ailing animal to a tree, they summoned the president. But Roosevelt decided that it would be unsportsmanlike to kill the captive bear; instead he ordered it be put down to end its suffering. And that was how the legend of Teddy’s bear was born. When Washington Post political cartoonist Clifford Berryman heard the story, he sketched a cartoon titled “Drawing the Line in Mississippi,” a phrase which played up both the border dispute as well as Roosevelt’s refusal to shoot a captive bear. In the cartoon a man holds a rope tied around the throat of an adult bear while TR stands with his rifle, his back turned against the sad scene and his hand held out as if to stop what was happening. Berryman’s cartoon immediately captured the public’s attention. In an effort to capitalize on its popularity and further its already-powerful message, his subsequent renderings depicted a cute bear cub rather than an old black bear. It is the image of this baby bear that is most often recalled when folks discuss the history of teddy bears. When Russian immigrants Morris and Rose Michtom saw the cartoon, they were inspired to put a stuffed bear that Rose had made in the window of their of Brooklyn stationary and novelty store.

    Teddy Bear: The Dearest, Nearest, and Scariest Qing He University of Wisconsin-Madison The teddy bear, as one of the world’s most favorite stuffed toy, is distinct from real animals. In this paper, the author applies anthropological, philosophical and psychological theories to mainly explore two questions: 1. Why has the teddy bear achieved such incomparable commercial and cultural success around the world? 2. Is it accidental or inevitable that a cruel monster, instead of other adorable animals, has become the prototype of a popular toy? The paper discussed the dialectic relations between human beings and the nature and argued that perpetuation, tameness and nearness are three main characteristics that offer grounds for the teddy bear’s existence and popularity. INTRODUCTION Bears may be the cruelest and the most dangerous wild animals in North America. Encountering a bear could be an exciting experience for tourists in the wild, as well as a horrible one. However, the teddy bear, as a form of the world’s most favorite stuffed toy, presents an image distinct from real animals. The teddy bear is benign, soft, adorable and docile. Throughout the world, the teddy bear has become an icon of children’s companion and representative of affection, innocence, comfort and family-centered values. Why has the teddy bear achieved such an incomparable commercial and cultural success across the world? If we look at the history of the teddy bear and how a dangerous kind of monster has become an enduring form of toy, we may find the birth of the first teddy bear and its later success purely accidental.

    Notes on the Exhibition Passage One DIANE ARBUS Self-Portrait with Camera February 1945 [Figures 1.11 –1.13] Diane Arbus, in this small photograph, is a woman of twenty-two years old. She was born in 1923 in New York City, to an upper-middle-class Jewish family, and died by her own hand in 1971.1 The picture, though taken ten years before she studied photography with Lisette Model (from 1955 to 1957), clearly identifies her as a photographer. Arbus ultimately became a pivotal person in the history of twentieth-century documentary photography. In this photograph, she has made a composition of herself in partnership with her large Deardorff & Sons camera, a gift from her husband, Allan Arbus. Arbus has used her camera to capture the moment of looking at herself in the mirror of her parents’ bathroom. She is not peering into the camera’s lens but rather at her reflection. The picture is one of several photographs Arbus took of herself in order to stay connected to her husband once he had been sent to Burma during World War II. The photograph documents yet another bond. On April 3, 1945, Doon, the first of two daughters, was born. Since 1971, Doon has administered the rights to her mother’s work. There is an additional historical connection, by virtue of coinciding dates, which suggests a link of two Jewish lives in contrasting circumstances. Across the Atlantic, Anne Frank, a Jewish child born in 1929 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, fled with her family to the Netherlands in 1933, when she was four years old.
