On Eagles Wings The Cadet Command (ROTC) Patch The Cadet Command Shield symbolizes the Army mission of National Defense and is divided into quarters representing the four traditional Military Science Courses comprising the Senior ROTC curriculum. The Sword signifies courage, gallantry, and self – sacrifice intrinsic to the profession of arms. The Lamp denotes the pursuit of knowledge, higher learning and the partnership of Army ROTC with American colleges and universities. The Greek Helmet is symbolic of the ancient civilization concept of the Warrior Scholar. The motto “Leadership Excellence” expresses the ultimate responsibility of Army ROTC in the discharge of its moral responsibility to the Nation. The Golden Eagle Battalion conducts a Patching Ceremony, during which incoming Cadets receive their ROTC patch. Cadets who receive their patch during this ceremony must have first completed their Warrior Scholar List. The Warrior Scholar List is comprised of various tasks and information that Cadets must learn and complete in order to seek out and gain an understanding of basic army knowledge and an appreciation of the foundation of the Golden Eagle Battalion. 3 Battalion Crest This crest of the Army ROTC Battalion at Marquette University was authorized 9 September 1963. Our Battalion crest represents the heritage of Marquette University, our host institution. The upper portion is a scene that is taken from a United States postage stamp of the Trans-Mississippi issue of 1898. It bares the label, “Marquette on the Mississippi.” Father Marquette is portrayed half turning to speak to a group of Indians while he points in the great river whose course he followed and explored. The canoe sits atop a wreath of two colors, god and blue, representing the colors of the University. The design of the middle portion of the crest comes from the coat of arms of the noble Spanish family of Lily. A member of this family is Ignatius Lily, responsible for founding the Society of Jesus who in turn founded Marquette University. The two wolves represent the generosity of the house. It was said that the followers of the family were so well maintained that even the wolves found a feast within the kettle after the soldiers had eaten. The motto “Citoyen Patriote” means Citizen Patriot and represents our role as cadets and our commitment to serve our country as civilian soldiers. 4 The Golden Eagle Battalion Mission "The Golden Eagle Senior ROTC Battalion recruits, educates, develops, and inspires senior ROTC cadets in the Milwaukee metro area of operations to become quality LEADERS and LIEUTENANTS with strong moral and ethical character and commitment to service as commissioned officers for our total army force." 5 Alma Maters of the Golden Eagle Battalion* Marquette: Hail Alma Mater, Thee We Do Call. Concordia win this game! 7 The GEB Spirit Stick The Golden Eagle Battalion is built on a foundation of hard work, integrity, and other shared core values. These values are embodied in the GEB Spirit Stick. The GEB Spirit Stick is a representation of the unification of the parts of our program into one solid force: The Golden Eagle Battalion. The Spirit Stick can be found inside the Unit and is often brought with to competitions and events in which the GEB is participating to make a statement of our presence and assert the values we stand by and act in, especially in competition. 8 CHAPTER 1 Creeds, Oaths, Prayers, and Songs 9 The Soldier’s Creed I am an American Soldier. I am a warrior and a member of a team. I serve the people of the United States, and live the Army Values. *I will always place the mission first. *I will never accept defeat. *I will never quit. *I will never leave a fallen comrade. I am disciplined, physically and mentally tough, trained and proficient in my warrior tasks and drills. I always maintain my arms, my equipment and myself. I am an expert and I am a professional. I stand ready to deploy, engage, and destroy, the enemies of the United States of America in close combat. I am a guardian of freedom and the American way of life. I am an American Soldier. *The Warrior Ethos 10 The Ranger’s Creed Recognizing that I volunteered as a Ranger, fully knowing the hazards of my chosen profession, I will always endeavor to uphold the prestige, honor, and high esprit de corps of the Rangers. Acknowledging the fact that a Ranger is a more elite Soldier who arrives at the cutting edge of battle by land, sea, or air, I accept the fact that as a Ranger my country expects me to move further, faster and fight harder than any other Soldier. Never shall I fail my comrades. I will always keep myself mentally alert, physically strong and morally straight and I will shoulder more than my share of the task whatever it may be, one- hundred-percent and then some. Gallantly will I show the world that I am a specially selected and well-trained Soldier. My courtesy to superior officers, neatness of dress and care of equipment shall set the example for others to follow. Energetically will I meet the enemies of my country. I shall defeat them on the field of battle for I am better trained and will fight with all my might. Surrender is not a Ranger word. I will never leave a fallen comrade to fall into the hands of the enemy and under no circumstances will I ever embarrass my country. Readily will I display the intestinal fortitude required to fight on to the Ranger objective and complete the mission though I be the lone survivor. Rangers lead the way! 11 The Non-Commissioned Officer’s Creed No one is more professional than I. I am a noncommissioned officer, a leader of Soldiers. As a noncommissioned officer, I realize that I am a member of a time honored corps, which is known as "The Backbone of the Army". I am proud of the Corps of noncommissioned officers and will at all times conduct myself so as to bring credit upon the Corps, the military service and my country regardless of the situation in which I find myself. I will not use my grade or position to attain pleasure, profit, or personal safety. Competence is my watchword. My two basic responsibilities will always be uppermost in my mind—accomplishment of my mission and the welfare of my Soldiers. I will strive to remain technically and tactically proficient. I am aware of my role as a noncommissioned officer. I will fulfill my responsibilities inherent in that role. All Soldiers are entitled to outstanding leadership; I will provide that leadership. I know my Soldiers and I will always place their needs above my own. I will communicate consistently with my Soldiers and never leave them uninformed. I will be fair and impartial when recommending both rewards and punishment. Officers of my unit will have maximum time to accomplish their duties; they will not have to accomplish mine. I will earn their respect and confidence as well as that of my Soldiers. I will be loyal to those with whom I serve; seniors, peers, and subordinates alike. I will exercise initiative by taking appropriate action in the absence of orders. I will not compromise my integrity, nor my moral courage. I will not forget, nor will I allow my comrades to forget that we are professionals, noncommissioned officers, leaders! 12 The Cadet Creed I am an Army Cadet. Soon I will take an oath and become an Army Officer committed to defending the values, which make this nation great. Honor is my touchstone. I understand mission first and people always. I am the past: the spirit of those warriors who have made the final sacrifice. I am the present: the scholar and apprentice soldier enhancing my skills in the science of warfare and the art of leadership. But, above all, I am the future: the future warrior leader of the United States Army. May God give me the compassion and judgment to lead and the gallantry in battle to win.

The most fundamental way that God has revealed Himself is as a Trinity: Father, Son and Spirit, enjoying one another, loving one another for all of eternity. Creating in order to share that love, to invite us into that love at the initiation of the Father. What does a great father do? A great father creates a great family. A few years ago I was telling a friend about my Wonder Woman experience and she told another friend and the two of them purchased a Wonder Woman keychain for me. When they were presenting me with the keychain, my friend said, “We think you are Wonder Woman!” At that moment, I felt an electrical zing move from the top of my head down to my feet and I felt this impression on my heart and mind, “You got to be her. You got to be Wonder Woman.” My immediate reaction to this impression was, “No I haven’t! I haven’t saved anyone from a burning building or stopped a speeding train!” As I continued to process the impression I received, however, I began to realize what heroes really do… they help people.
