Au Gres students launched an ambitious study to learn about the river’s water quality and increase the public’s awareness of its importance to their community. Fourth and fifth grade students investigated biotic (living) and abiotic (non- living) indicators at several sites on the river. Students analyzed and interpreted the data they collected and also shared it through Great Lakes FieldScope, a web- based mapping, analysis, and collaboration tool that engages volunteers—in this case, students—as citizen scientists. But they were eager to get their feet wet in order to make some important contributions to their environment and their community.
