27 Day 4 – Saturday, May 5 Western Bohemia PILSEN

Pilsen is the fourth largest city in the Czech Republic. It is located in western Bohemia. It is an important industrial, commercial, cultural, and administrative center. The city was founded on the confluence of four rivers - Uhlava, Uslava, Radbuza and Mze - by the Czech king Wenceslas II in 1295. Situated on the crossroads of two important trade routes and close to Prague, Pilsen experienced an immediate rapid growth. Nowadays, the Pilsen metropolitan area covers 125 square kilometers. Its population is 165, 000 inhabitants. The rich cultural and economical standard of life in Pilsen is particularly enhanced by its heritage. In 1989, the ancient town center was declared a historical landmark to be carefully preserved. The rich architectural gems here include Gothic St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral, Renaissance City Hall, Baroque reconstruction of the Archdeacon’s house and Franciscan Monastery, and the recently re-opened Great Synagogue of Pilsen. Many Pilsen public buildings, such as the city theatre, museum, the Burgher Hall or houses with Mikolas Ales’s graffiti, date back to the 19th century. Industrialization took off in the 19th century. At that time, such industrial giants as the engineering complex Skoda and the Pilsen Brewery were established. Nowadays, the modern industrial zone in Borska Fields represents an extraordinary project in the Czech industrial sphere. Day 4 – Saturday, May 5 Pilsen – city tour AM LOOS appartments

The city of Pilsen is very famous for the high number of interior realizations which were designed by the world-wide famous architect Adolf Loos. There were only three realizations which were opened for public until recently. However, in November 2015 a real unique piece completed the collection of accessible interiors – the Semler House in 110 Klatovska Street. This interior is the only realization in Pilsen featuring a so called raumplan. Until then this principle was used only in the Villa Muller in Prague. In Pilsen the task of Adolf Loos was even more complicated – he was asked to design and build-in a spatially divided interior which features six different height levels into a structure of a city house which originally had only three floors. The house was bought by Oskar Semler in 1932. Adolf Loos created the initial design of the house interior. Unfortunately, due to his progressing illness the detailed solution was created by his close colleague and pupil Heinrich Kulka. The residence reconstruction was finished in 1934, a year after Adolf Loos died, and the Semler’s family used the house until 1939 when they were forced to leave the country. The house was confiscated by various German offices and it was used for tenants for many decades. The precious interior division and design was significantly damaged as the residence was divided into several apartment units. In a very bad condition the house was taken over by the Gallery of West Bohemia and slowly, with attention being paid to details it undergoes a process of reconstruction. Recently, a guided tour is arranged for visitors which takes them to a salon with the upper gallery, shows them a fire place and an in-built bar, a dining room and a kitchen which featured highly developed technologies for the time when it was built. The guided tours for public are managed and arranged by the Pilsen – TOURISM and this one constitutes the third guided tour of the Loos Interiors in Pilsen. Day 4 – Saturday, May 5 Pilsen – city tour PM PATTON MEMORIAL PILSEN

The museum Patton Memorial Pilsen includes more than a thousand exhibits from private collections. The opening section of the museum presents the final air-raid campaigns in Western Bohemia and the bombing of the Škoda plants. Surrounded by the sound of sirens and authentic film sequences and photographs of that time, visitors are drawn into the atmosphere of the final combat operations of WWII. The exhibition documents the advancement of the US Army in what was then Czechoslovakia, and the deployment of US soldiers until November 1945. Authentic photographs depict the moments of the war´s final days , the arrival of the US troops, moments of relaxation and friendly encounters with locals, as well as some ceremonial events – e.g. recordings from a troop inspection on 15 June 1945 attended by the president Dr. Edvard Beneš. Other exhibits document the UNRRA aid thanks to which people were able to cope with the difficult situation after the war ended – food rations of all sorts, empty and unopened food cans, flour and maize bags or popular chewing gums. There is the gear and equipment of the time, medical material, eating kits, field rations, sports and relaxation equipment, craft tools, printed materials and many other objects which the US soldiers left behind as war relics. A significant part of the exhibition focuses on George S. Patton, the legendary commander of the 3rd US Army and his old friend general Ernest N. Harmon, who provided technical and material assistance for the recovery of our country and who said goodbye to the Czech population together with US troops during the last inspection in November 1945. The museum also presents documents, newspapers and magazines from the period of the totalitarian regime in 1948 – 1989, symbolically placed in a barred cage. These documents provide a statement about the efforts of the communist regime to obscure facts about the liberation of Pilsen by the US Army. Day 4 – Saturday, May 5 Pilsen - dinner BREWERY and NA SPILCE RESTAURANT

Welcome to Šumava The Šumava (Bohemian) Forest together with the neighboring Bavarian Forest creates the most extensive forest landscape in , called the "Green Roof of Europe". The plateaus with emerging peaks and canyons formed by a natural force of water erosion in the western part, or the extensive Trojmezenská mountain massif along with the Vltava alluvial plain in the south, are home to various communities of plant and animal species.

Numerous peatlands communities enable even some postglacial-age species to survive. Primeval mountain forest remnants, glacial lakes, mountain and valley raised bogs make this area a unique "gem" of natural beauty ingled with traces of secular human presence, giving this sparsely inhabited area a special magic and a touch of eeriness.

Šumava National Park Climb on the green roof of Europe in the Šumava National Park! Few places in Central Europe offer such a harmonious landscape as the Šumava National Park. The deep forests on the Czech-Bavarian border are so vast as to form the largest forested area on the continent. A combination of centuries-old primaeval forests, crystal-clear glacial lakes, and mysterious peat bogs creates a uniquely poetic place for active holidays at all times of year. Boubín (1362 m), together with the neighboring Bobík (1264 m), dominates the southeastern part of Šumava. Even more popular than the actual peak is the nature reserve Boubín Forest, the largest indigenous forest in Central Europe, where several spruces, firs, beeches and maples reach the age of 300-400 years.

Boubín mountain is one the best known mountains of the Šumava mountains () and of South Bohemia as well. It towers between the town Vimperk, which is situated north of Boubín, and the village Lenora, which lies at the southern foot. It is a very well-known symbol of the Šumava mountains due to its height, typical outline, large forests and the nature reserve Boubínský Prales (Boubín Forest), which was already founded on its southern slopes in 1858 by the verderer of the Schwarzenbergs' domain Josef John. The nature trail Boubínský Prales (founded in 1979) leads along the most valuable core of the primeval forest. Day 8 – Wednesday, May 9 Southern Bohemia CESKE BUDEJOVICE Elegant townhouses gathered around one of the largest squares in Europe, an idyllic salt store and a brewery cooking up the original Budvar beer – this is České Budějovice, the capital of South Bohemia. This city has preserved its historical character over the centuries but is also a modern regional centre. So come and savor the city’s pleasant atmosphere with a tankard of our world famous beer.

České Budějovice was founded in the mid-13th century as a royal city. Thanks to its strategic position straddling the ancient salt trading route between Prague and Linz, later replaced by Europe’s first horse-drawn railway, the city grew gradually richer and richer and developed into an important settlement. Despite frequent wars and fires in the Middle Ages, a large number of historical sites have survived and these can be admired by today’s visitors. A textbook square In the center of České Budějovice you’ll find the city’s pride and joy – a square piazza named after King Přemysl Otakar II. One of the largest squares in Europe, it’s exactly a hectare in size and has become an integral part of every Czech mathematics textbook. The square is hemmed by exquisite Baroque arcaded houses, and the grand building of the town hall, one of the country’s most attractive, also graces its cobbles. Take a break by the Samson Fountain in the middle which sports some wonderful sculptural decoration. On a walk through the city center be sure to visit the Cathedral of St. Nicholas and the city’s famous salt store. Day 8 – Wednesday, May 9 Southern Bohemia CESKE BUDEJOVICE – Masne kramy Restaurant

Originally, in 14th century, it was a meat market - wooden building with butcher shops, where many master butchers lived at the time. The foundations of the present brick building of a basilica ground-plan come from the 2nd half of the 16th century. The sidelong lower halls were home to individual butcher shops accessible to the public from the tall middle hall. The western face of the building has been maintained up to the present day in the Renaissance style with battlements, loop-holes on the attic gable and the gable formed by so- called swallow tails. After a new town slaughterhouse was built at “Pražské předměstí” outskirts in 1899, the meat market underwent many changes regarding its construction and use, being turned into small shops with various goods and gradually fell into disrepair. Owing to the dilapidation, its demolition was seriously considered after 1945. After the reconstruction, the Masné krámy has established itself as a restaurant renowned for its hospitality, great cuisine and particularly perfectly treated drawn beer from Budvar Brewery. The original basilica ground-plan was maintained. The main middle hall is lined with individual loges on both sides. The tap and the bar dominate the main hall, being the throbbing heart of the restaurant, which gives life to the whole interior. Behind the tap, there is a special room with lighted copper tanks, making a functional as well as an expressional feature of the tap. a spacious loge particularly suitable for large groups of guests is situated to the right of the front door, while the left side is home to an individual raised seating area and a small lounge. The entire back half of the restaurant is designed as a quieter area, intended primarily for quiet relaxation with friends.

NB: Budvar or Budweiser? You will discover the history of the famous name here! Day 9 – Thursday, May 10

Itinerary FOLLOW THE ROSE! Distances: České Budejovice – Vyssi Brod 50 km Vyssi Brod – Rozmberk 9 km Rozmberk – Cesky Krumlov 27 km Overnight: Hotel Clarion (České Budějovice)

43 Day 9 – Thursday, May 10 Southern Bohemia VYSSI BROD monastery

The town and the monastery Vyšší Brod are both situated on the upper right bank of the Vltava river in the foothills of the Bohemian Forest, in a romantic landscape amidst thick forests.

Cistercian Abbey in Vyšší Brod (Latin: „Altovadum“, German: „Hohenfurth“) was founded on June 1st,1259 by the nobleman Vok of Rosenberg. The legend holds that the nobleman founded the monastery out of gratitude for his miraculous rescue out of the stormy Vltava river as he had turned to the Blessed Virgin Mary for help while drowning. The Rosenberg dynasty died out in 1611 but Cistercians have been praying for the repose of their souls until the present time. The monastery was returned to the Order after 40 years of communist rule and the monks currently strive to restore it to become once again the region’s spiritual and cultural center. After the Rosenbergs, the aegis over the monastery passed on to the Eggenbergs, and in 1719 to the Schwarzenbergs. From 1941-45, the monastery was confiscated on behalf of the Nazi „SS“ needs, and between 1950 and 1990, it was run by the Czechoslovak communist government merely as a museum. The core of the monastery was returned to the Cistercians in 1991.

ORA et LABORA Visiting a Cistercian monastery only makes sense if combined with understanding the monastery’s spiritual basis. The architecture and art can be understood if the visitor is acquainted with the spirituality expressed in them. It was just this climate that gave birth not only to this and other monasteries, but to all of European culture. Day 9 – Thursday, May 10 Southern Bohemia ROZMBERK castle

Rožmberk: a Romanesque residence with art masterpieces

The castle from the middle of the 13th century belongs among the oldest castles of the Vítkovci family, the predecessors of the one of the most powerful Bohemian aristocratic families – the Rosenbergs – who, after the king, used to be in the most powerful positions in the country. Despite a number of learned and venturesome feudal lords, apparently the most popular family figure is Perchta of Rožmberk, who, as legend has it, has been walking around the family residences as a mournful ghost since her death. Day 9 – Thursday, May 10 Southern Bohemia CESKY KRUMLOV – UNESCO heritage Follow the rose and come into the fairy tale decoration!

Český Krumlov, a medieval town in South Bohemia, retains its fairytale-like atmosphere to these days and is well- deserving of its inclusion on UNESCO's list of cultural heritage sites.
