Glenn Gruett to be honored with WQAW’s Lifetime Achievement Award The WQAW Board of Directors has named Glenn Gruett, founder and CEO of Water-Right, as the recipient of the WQAW 2010 Lifetime Achievement Award. Glenn will be presented the award during the Sept. 10th banquet at the WQAW Convention at the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel in Appleton, Wis. Glenn Gruett started his business in treating problem water using silica crystals called zeolite. In 1963, he incorporated the business under the name of Water-Right, Inc. and continued specializing in problem water areas. Business expanded through plumbers, well drillers, and water treatment professionals who primarily worked in rural water areas of the country. Education was the foundation of the business, teaching and training dealers about water. During the 80’s, two significant changes had taken place. Glenn’s sons, Kurt, Greg and Guy, had joined the company and an opportunity arose to purchase Arizona Minerals, a zeolite manufacturer. Glenn, not shying away from the risk, purchased the plant and Mineral-Right, and the ensuing company was formed. Today, Mineral-Right is the sole producer of Crystal-Right media which is distributed throughout North America, Europe, Asia, and even into Russia. Again, as the company grew and with the sons support, new products were developed. Glenn was instrumental in the development of the Sanitizer Series, the only self-sanitizing water conditioner. Business grew dramatically after its introduction. The business at this point had taken on a true family nature, and with Glenn still a driving force, Water-Right purchased two companies in the early 2000’s. Clean Water Testing, a state certified lab and Water Watch, an inspection service company, became Water-Right owned subsidiaries which greatly expanded Water-Right’s water testing capability. Ever the educator, Glenn continues to work with Water-Right in conducting water treatment seminars throughout the U.S. Some other past accomplishments include:  Pilot (flies company twin engine Cessna)  Worked closely with WI DNR conducting seminars, and worked on the development of the original Wisconsin Water Treatment Hand Book  Taught classes for Chinese, Japanese, and was the only US delegate to the first water symposium at the University of Moscow  Patient advocate to the Food and Drug Administration in Washington Even today, Glenn is still very active in all aspects of the family businesses, especially Mineral-Right, the media manufacturer. In 2008, Glenn was given a special honor by the National Water Quality Association and received the Ray Cross Award. This award is given to individuals “whose pioneer spirit and unwavering commitment made a noticeable difference in the water treatment industry”. Though Glenn has stepped back from the business, he never intends to fully retire. Personal time is spent with his wife, Linda, at the cottage. He enjoys snowmobiling, fishing, downhill skiing and remote control airplanes. Glenn has three sons, Kurt, Greg and Guy in business with him, and daughter, Gretchen, who is a school teacher and also enjoys spending time with his 10 grandchildren.

Ready, Set, Elect! – 2010 Election Overview By Kevin Currie, Summer Associate, The Capitol Group, LLC Mark your calendars and educate yourself and your employees on the candidates.  PrimaryPrimary Election: September 14, 2010  General Election: November 2, 2010

It has been just under a year and a half since President Obama was elected and another election is already upon us. The 2010 midterm election presents a make or break scenario for both Democrats and Republicans for the next two years. Pundits continue to predict depletion of Democrats in both chambers of Congress, potentially leading to a shift in the balance of power in Washington.

For Wisconsin, there is also a lot at stake including control of the Executive Branch, Assembly and Senate. In addition, the 107 people elected or re-elected will have to deal with the largest deficit Wisconsin has ever faced-- $2.17 billion (and counting). With 23 open seats, at least a quarter of these newly-elected individuals will be rookies to the legislative process and there will be an extensive, but quick learning curve. We encourage all WQAW members to educate themselves on statewide candidates as well as local candidates in your area. A complete list of candidates can be found here: http://gab.wi.gov/elections-voting/results/candidates-on-ballot Not even sure what legislative district you are in? You can find that here: www.legis.wi.gov/waml.

RACE FOR GOVERNOR For the first time in over two decades an incumbent Wisconsin Governor is not seeking re-election. The top candidates are: Republican Mark Neumann, Republican Scott Walker, and Democrat Tom Barrett.

Mark Neumann (R) Neumann was born February 27, 1954 in East Troy, WI. Throughout his professional life he has balanced entrepreneurship with politics, beginning his first small business in 1986 and winning his first election to office as a congressman in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1995. While in congress he served on the Appropriations and Budget committees. In 1998 he campaigned unsuccessfully against Russ Feingold for the U.S. Senate, and had not attempted to run for office since, instead deciding to remain in the private sector, until he officially announced his candidacy for governor on July 1, 2009. Mark Neumann on Jobs: His goal is to retain, create, and attract jobs to Wisconsin. To create an environment conducive to all three, Mark Neumann plans on reducing taxes so Wisconsin businesses will choose to stay and new, out of state businesses will be lured in. He also believes there is a strong correlation between a highly educated public and the attractiveness of a business environment. Mark Neumann on Taxes: He is committed to creating a balanced budget in Wisconsin by reducing taxes and controlling government spending. Government spending has exceeded the rate of inflation in recent years and Neumann has pledged to reverse that trend. By keeping spending below the rate of inflation he hopes to use the difference between that and revenue growth to cut taxes. Scott Walker (R) Born on November 2, 1967 Scott Walker began his political career at an early age. He was elected to the Wisconsin state assembly in 1993 where he remained until 2002 when he became the Milwaukee County Executive. He announced his official candidacy for governor in April 2009. Scott Walker on Jobs: A staunch advocate of relieving the tax burden on small business, Scott Walker believes that when taxes are cut companies will reinvest in higher production and creation of jobs, which will not only keep jobs here in Wisconsin, but will ultimately increase tax revenues as well.

The Source Page 10

Ready, Set, Elect – continued from page 9 Scott Walker on Taxes: He recognizes that Wisconsin is one of the highest taxed states in the U.S. and believes that out of control government spending is to blame. Instead of continuing the 6 year stretch of budget deficits, Walker has argued that government spending needs to be completely reformed. Most notably he has claimed that starting the state budget over at zero is a large part of the solution. To do this, many programs deemed unnecessary will not be given annual percentage increases, or perhaps wholly scrapped from the budget. Tom Barrett (D) Tom Barrett was born December 8, 1953 and is currently the Mayor of Milwaukee. He has held office in both the State Assembly and Senate, as well as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served on the Energy and Commerce Committee as well as the Health and Environment subcommittee. In November of 2009 Barrett announced his candidacy for governor. Tom Barrett on Jobs: He believes the government has to lead the way for job creation in the private sector and one of the ways it can do that is to condense the quantity of regulations and organize the chaotic regulatory process. Barrett is also a supporter of generating more venture capital in an effort to support Wisconsin businessman. Tom Barrett on Taxes: He has advocated targeted tax cuts to catalyze job creation in the private sector including investment in the dairy production process and increased spending in research and development of technologies. Barrett has also promised the approval and execution of new construction projects that would increase Wisconsin’s infrastructure. LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR The race for Lieutenant Governor will be an open seat election this fall. The door has been left open for eager challengers, and four have separated themselves from the rest. Spencer Coggs, Henry Sanders and Thomas Nelson will battle for the Democratic nomination for Lieutenant Governor in September, while Rebecca Kleefisch and Brett Davis both seek the Republican nod.

Spencer Coggs (D) A Milwaukee native, Spencer Coggs has been a full time legislator since 1982 and currently serves in the Wisconsin Senate representing Wisconsin’s 6th District. He began his first term as a State Senator in 2003, but served in the Assembly for 20 years prior. As a Senator, he serves on the Committee on Housing and Financial Institutions, the Joint Committee for Review of Criminal Penalties, and is the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Labor, Elections, and Urban Affairs.

Thomas Nelson (D) Tom Nelson was born on March 3, 1976 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He graduated from Little Chute High School, Carleton College, and earned a Masters in Public Administration from Princeton University in 2004. Nelson was a full time legislator and was first elected to the Assembly in 2004. He has also been re-elected since 2006. In 2009 Nelson was voted the majority leader in the Assembly by his colleagues.

Henry Sanders (D) Henry Sanders has worked for the City of Madison on prevailing wage issues and was Rep.Tammy Baldwin s outreach coordinator on labor, education, and environment issues. He served as Vice President of Economic Development and Public Policy for the Greater Madison Chamber of Commerce, where he helped to increase the collaboration and involvement of progressive, women, and minority- owned businesses in south-central Wisconsin. Sanders is a Madison native and a graduate of UW-Whitewater.

Rebecca Kleefisch (R) Rebecca Kleefisch graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a degree in Journalism. She held a reporting job at WISN-TV in Milwaukee and later got her first morning news anchor job at a news station in Rockford, Illinois. Later, she returned to Wisconsin and to WISN-TV, and anchored the morning news there for 4 years. When Kleefisch’s first child arrived in 2003 she left her anchor position to do contract work in public relations, marketing, and the media. The Source Page 11

Ready, Set, Elect – continued from page 10

Brett Davis (R) Brett Davis is currently serving his 3rd consecutive term as the 80th District State Representative from Oregon since being elected in 2004. He serves as the ranking Republican member of the Assembly Committee on Education, and as a member of the Financial Institutions, Rural Economic Development, and the Rural Affairs & Renewable Energy committees.

ATTORNEY GENERAL The race for the office of Attorney General pits a first time candidate, Democrat Scott Hassett, against the Republican incumbent J.B. Van Hollen.

J.B. Van Hollen (R) J.B. Van Hollen graduated from St. Olaf College in 1988 with a degree in Political Science and Economics. Two years later he graduated from the University of Wisconsin Law School and began his public service career as an Assistant State Public Defender in Spooner, Wisconsin. Later Van Hollen became a federal prosecutor as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin.

Scott Hassett (D) Scott Hassett was born in rural Dunn County, the son of Paul Hassett who was Chief of Staff to Governor Warren Knowles. He is an avid outdoorsman, hunter, and fisherman and is a member of the River Alliance of Wisconsin, Gathering Waters Conservancy, Wisconsin Bowhunters, and is a board member of the National Resources Foundation of Wisconsin. He also served as Governor Doyle’s DNR Secretary from ?? to ??.

U.S. SENATE Ron Johnson’s late announcement as a candidate for U.S. Senate does not appear to have affected his chances of receiving his party’s approval, as he appears to be a shoo-in for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senator come September. Even with that support, Johnson will have to run a nearly flawless race if he hopes to oust long time Democratic incumbent Russ Feingold.

Ron Johnson (R) Ron Johnson is a relative newcomer. Not only is Johnson new to this race, but he is new to politics—this is his first campaign for public office. In 1979, he and his wife, Jane, moved to Wisconsin and opened a business called Pacur, Inc. which manufactures plastic products for hospitals. The company initially had only 2 employees, Ron and his brother-in-law, but today Pacur, Inc. employs 73 people. He has also completed BA and MBA programs. He has run an aggressive compaign reaching out to voters with his “common sense” platform and his experience running a major business.

Russ Feingold (D) Russ Feingold was born in Janesville, Wisconsin and is an alumnus of the University of Wisconsin, Magdalen College at Oxford, and Harvard Law School. He served in the Wisconsin Senate from 1983 until 1993 and has been a member of the U.S. Senate since 1993. Feingold sits on several committees in the Senate, including the Budget, Judiciary, and Foreign Relations Committees. He is also the chair the subcommittees on the Constitution and African Affairs.
