1 LPSS Vision 2024 Letter from Superintendent Pathway to an A

After a year of unprecedented disruption and There truly is so much to be proud of as we uncertainty, our Lafayette Parish School System reflect on how far we’ve come. I know the faces both challenges and opportunities. Like health and safety protocols we implemented school systems across the country, we are across the district, not to mention the shifting beginning to measure and assess the impacts formats for in-person and distance learning, of the pandemic on student learning. We know were a major challenge for everyone. Because many students have fallen behind due to the of how well our district followed guidelines and circumstances of the past year, despite the best adapted to different circumstances, we were efforts of teachers, staff and parents. That’s able to keep schools open, maintain low why LPSS is creating tutoring programs, summer transmission levels and avoid widespread school plans and other strategies to supplement school closures. We appreciate the inspiring student learning, attending to individual needs community support we received throughout as well as ensuring growth. these many months.

Alongside these challenges, our district also I am so proud of the resilience we’ve shown has exciting opportunities for improvement over the last year, and I know it will continue to and greater student success. Our academic and strengthen our resolve to do our very best for administrative leaders have developed a plan the children of Lafayette Parish. We will not to take our district from a “B” to an “A” in state forget the lessons we’ve learned, nor will we rankings in three years. The vision of "Pathway take for granted the tremendous value of in- to an A" is simple and includes leveraging person learning for our students. When we operational and instructional resources to work together, there isn’t anything we can’t ensure our students can succeed in school and accomplish – and I believe the future is brighter the world we leave for them. than ever.

We are prioritizing existing gaps and deficiencies to make sure our most skilled faculty and the school system’s resources are directed where they can make the biggest impact. We’re Irma D. Trosclair expanding opportunities for enrichment, Superintendent college and career preparation and advanced training for students across the district. 12 LPSS Vision 2024 Pre-K/Kindergarten # Readiness 1

The LPSS Early Childhood Department leads a network of partner organizations and agencies (Lafayette Ready Start Network) working together to provide economically disadvantaged children birth to 5 years old with high-quality early care and education. LPSS currently works with 45 program partners in the community. On Track by 5 (Child Care Resource and Referral Agency) provides professional learning opportunities to all Early Learning Centers and Family Child Care Providers, in addition to assisting families in accessing child care. LPSS serves approximately 1,380 Pre-K children at 23 school sites across the district. Truman Early Childhood Education Center serves the majority of these children. In addition to traditional Pre-K settings, LPSS offers seats for four-year-olds in our magnet academies for French immersion, Spanish immersion, two-way immersion, and arts and technology. We also have a licensed childcare center that serves children (6 weeks to 3 years old) of LPSS teen parents. The center provides quality care and education for these young children while the student is completing his/her education. The research is clear – 90% of brain development happens before the age of five. In addition, two out of three Louisiana families have both parents working. Louisiana must provide quality early childhood experiences to build on that potential and ensure families have the support they need.

Our public schools do far more than prepare students for post-secondary or teach one to think career success; they also promote civic participa- tion and a lifelong love of learning. intensively and We continue to strive for improvements in test scores and other measures of student learning to think critically. to ensure that our graduates enter the world prepared for a future with boundless potential Intelligence plus and opportunities not yet imagined. But we also believe that our schools have a responsibility to character – that is help children reach their full potential as happy, healthy human beings – encouraging their the goal of true creativity, teaching them to be effective problem-solvers and inculcating a spirit of service to the community. education.” – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Our most important metric for success as a school district ultimately goes beyond letter grades and scoring. We must strive to help each child achieve his/her fullest potential as an individual and as a member of our community. We need our young people to bring new ideas and energy to our local economy, to help us build anew for the future and to contribute to a shared prosperity for all of Lafayette Parish.
