The Boston Red Sox Saturday, September 23, 2017 * The Boston Globe Red Sox put new formula to work in win over Reds Peter Abraham CINCINNATI — The Red Sox were up by a run after four innings against the Cincinnati Reds on Friday night and Rick Porcello had thrown only 57 pitches. His performance had been erratic, the righthander putting eight men in base. But Porcello expected he would stay in the game because that is what managers traditionally do, they let starting pitchers try to hold a lead. But most managers do not have a pitcher of David Price’s caliber in the bullpen and John Farrell does. Farrell turned to Price in the fifth inning and he handed that lead over to Addison Reed with two outs in the seventh. Craig Kimbrel took over in the ninth and the Sox beat the Reds, 5-4. It was a dress rehearsal for the playoffs, the Sox using Price for multiple innings to get to Reed and Kimbrel. That combination can be as good if not better than what any other playoff team has. “You saw it last year in the playoffs, so many starters went five innings or even less. You need that guy to bridge the gap,” Reed said. “When that guy is David Price, it doesn’t get much better. We’re pretty damn excited to have him down there.” With the Yankees losing in Toronto, the Sox now lead the American League East by four games with nine games to play. “The ball’s in our court. -

LOUIS -- The Reds have every reason to take a moment and savor the flavor of a rare series win at Busch Stadium. Sunday's 8- 0 victory over the Cardinals not only gave Cincinnati two of three games, but also just its fourth series win out of the last 29 at St. Louis since 2006. It was July 27-29, 2015, when the Reds last came to town and took a series from the Cardinals. Sunday's win was powered by Adam Duvall's 3-for-4, two-RBI game while starting pitcher Scott Feldman cruised with six-plus scoreless innings, allowing four hits with one walk and collecting six strikeouts for his first win with the Reds. More > "It's not facing demons and ghosts of series in years past. Our team is better than it's been in the last few years, with a lot of new guys that just want to come in and play baseball, play hard and play well," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "We pitched two shutouts here. Not only is that unlikely, but to come in here and be able to do and extract two wins is a big deal for us in the early start of a season." Coming off of 7 1/3 scoreless innings and 10 strikeouts on Opening Day vs. -

Charlie Manuel has become part of their group. When the Phillies beat the Colorado Rockies at the end of July, Manuel became the fourth manager in Phillies history to lead the club to 500 wins. In so doing, Manuel joined Gene Mauch (646 wins), Harry Wright (636), and Danny Ozark (594) as Phillies skippers who have won 500 or more games. Manuel achieved his lofty status faster than the other three. He did it midway through his sixth season, just 16 days before Ozark won his 500th. Mauch, the Phillies' skipper from 1960-68, reached the milestone in his seventh season, while Wright (1884-93), managing in seasons when the schedules were considerably shorter, took nine years to get there. Now 66 and the oldest manager in team history, Manuel has led the Phillies to levels none of the other three ever did. His Phillies have gone to the World Series twice, and he is the only manager whose teams have posted 85 or more wins five straight years. -
