President Report

It is with great pride that I present the 2017/18 annual summary for Surf Life Saving Illawarra Inc. It was such a special year with the anniversary celebration of the 100th year since formation of the Illawarra Branch. Thank you to you all for your dedication, service and extraordinary efforts to ensure that no lives were lost between the red and yellow flags whilst you were on patrol. It was truly a challenging season, with 9,791 preventative actions 448 first aids, 34 ambulance calls, 353,822 public attendances and 427 rescues across our 17 beaches.

To our celebration this year. In November 1917, over 100 years ago six (6) clubs namely South, Wollongong North, Corrimal, Bulli, Austinmer, and Helensburgh met at the Bulli Council Chambers and formed what was then known as the South Coast Branch Surf Bathers Association. In 1924 there was a name change to the South Coast Branch and then in 1929 the name changed to as it is known today, Illawarra Branch. It was noteworthy that at our gala Awards of Excellence function amongst our many volunteers in attendance that I was able to read out Letters of Appreciation from: The Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP, Prime Minister of Australia, and The Honourable Bill Shorten MP, Leader of the Opposition.

Congratulations to all in Surf Life Saving Illawarra on 100 years of service to our community.

Thank you to our Sponsors, our Patrons, Local and Federal Government members for assisting us "to save lives, create great Australians and build better communities". Without your support we would not be able to do what we do. Surf Life Saving Illawarra would like to thank our patrons for their support:

- Ms Sharon Bird MP, Federal Member for Cunningham - Mr Gareth Ward MP, Member for Kiama - Mr Ryan Park MP, Member for Keira - Mr Paul Scully MP, Member for Wollongong - Mr Lee Evans MP, Member for Heathcote - Lord Mayor Councillor Gordon Bradbery OAM - Mr Bruce Gordon Network

Raising adequate funds to effectively manage the expenditure of the Branch continues to be a major focus year on year. Thank you to Mr Ryan Park, Mr Paul Scully, and Mr Lee Evans for your support in our successful application from the NSW Government 2017 Community Building partnership program in obtaining funding to provide the community of the Illawarra a new Duty Officer Support Operations Vehicle. I would like to specifically mention the financial assistance received from:

• BlueScopeWIN Community Partners Committee – Surf Life Saving Illawarra BlueScopeWIN Community Partners Branch Championships. • Sydney Water Corporation – Sydney Water Premiership Series. • Coledale Camping Reserve – Surf Lifesaving Illawarra Support Operations. • Mercury Information Security Services – Surf Lifesaving Illawarra Support Operations.

I would like to acknowledge the support that DHL provide as a National Major Partner of Surf Life Saving and for their significant uniform sponsorship, enabling uniforms to be provided free of charge to patrolling lifesavers. Also, to Westpac as a National Major Partner of Surf Life Saving for their significant sponsorship towards the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter Service.

Wollongong City Council (WCC) and Surf Life Saving Illawarra (SLSI) continue to manage a very successful relationship through our Liaison meetings. Our monthly meetings ensure that there’s open communication channels between our 17 surf clubs, SLSI and WCC. This year we have discussed: Coastal Dune Management, Surf Club Building maintenance, Surf Club Leases, Patrol Service Level Agreement, Coastal Public Safety Risk Assessment recommendations and Surf Club Renewal and

Refurbishment priorities. Thank you to Mark Bond, Jason Foye and Jasmina Pandesvki for your positive interactions in ensuring that these meetings are success. Thank you to Wollongong City Council for supporting our clubs through payment of a subsidy in return for providing our volunteer lifesaving service.

Congratulations to all our Surf Sports athletes that competed so strongly this past season. Thank you to the Sydney Water Surf Series, Warilla Bowls Surf Boat Series and Australian IRB Championships organising committees as these events continued to attract the best competition to the Illawarra. Thank you to the local host clubs on these events Woonona, Bulli and Thirroul. Thankyou also to Bellambi SLSC for hosting the SLSI Junior Development Carnival and to Sandon Point and Bulli for hosting the BlueScopeWIN Community Partners Branch Championships.

At our successful 2017/18 Surf Life Saving Illawarra Awards of Excellence night, we were able to recognise our major award winners:

Ava Rushton, Helensburgh Stanwell Park SLSC Junior Lifesavers of the Year Sean Ritter, Scarborough Wombarra SLSC Volunteer of the Year Keith Caldwell, Bulli SLSC Club of the Year Bulli SLSC Winner Ted Marshall Memorial Surf Lifesaver of the Anthony O’Donoghue, Coledale SLSC Year Highly Commended Shannon Fox, Wollongong City SLSC

This year, an inaugural Youth Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Tegan Robertson from Bellambi SLSC. Tegan went on to win the inaugural SLSNSW Youth Volunteer of the Year Award. Congratulations to all.

In relation to the Financial Statements for the year end ending 30 June 2018: • Grants and Funding were down approximately $60,000 which negatively impacted the income position for the year. • There was a non-recurring, one-off cost for legal fees for Supreme Court litigation commenced against the Branch. The Court action was satisfactorily concluded in December 2017. • The branch was able to reduce expenditure in some areas during the year to help offset the reduction in income and one-off costs. • The transaction for the successful 2017 Community Building partnership program is not reflected in the financial statements. This is due to the lead-time to purchase a new vehicle and the receipt of grant funds in September 2018. • The executive will be working towards seeking more grants in this current period and budgeting to return to surplus as soon as possible.

I would like to acknowledge the efforts, great work and dedication of the branch executive Dan Meehan (Deputy President), Kevin Starling (Director of Surf Sports), Karla Erven (Director of Finance), Maria Caldwell (Director of Member Services), Jayson Norris (Director of Lifesaving), and Matthew Theris (Director of Education) – (Matthew stepped down towards the end of the season and was replaced by Gunther Enthaler) and very big thank you to our Executive Officer, Amy Vella.

To our individual portfolio advisors in Lifesaving, Surf Sports, Member Services and Education, I say a big thank you for your support. I would like to make special mention of the tireless work and effort of our Media Advisor, Anthony Turner – thank you.

I would also like to thank the Surf Life Saving NSW Board of Directors and Staff for their support of the Illawarra branch and for the support afforded to me in my inaugural year as SLSI President.

President Report cont.:

A special thankyou to the Illawarra Life Members for all their support and guidance that they have provided me throughout the season. I want to add my personal condolences to the families of William ‘Bill’ Seay, Hank Van Stuivenberg and David Denton, as we mourn the loss of three of our Surf Life Saving Illawarra Life Members this year.

Congratulations to all volunteer lifesavers, family and supporters for season 2017/18 and I wish everyone all the best for season 2018/19.

Peter Evert | President

Lifesaving Report

2017/18 Surf Life Saving season for Illawarra was yet again a fantastic result with no lives lost on patrolled beaches during patrol hours. Unfortunately, there were 5 coastal drownings in our region in non-patrolled areas, which highlights the importance of continually getting our message of beach and rock safety out to the public. It is an ongoing task that we must be vigilant with.

I would like to thank all the clubs that diligently patrolled their beach this season, taking care of the public which rounded off at 353,822 people. Of that number, approx. 88,454 were swimmers with the committed service that we provide consisting of 9,791 preventative actions, 427 rescues, our patrolling members administrated first aid 448 times to people, with 20 of those needing further care. Throughout the season, the beaches were closed 58 times due to conditions and/or other reasons.

A special thank you to all Support Operations members, those being Duty Officers and RWC members, who donate additional time and effort to ensure the extra support service is provided. We had 25 13SURF individual call outs last season, either throughout the week or outside patrol times on the weekends. 10 of these were involving swimmers and further 9 involving boating or kayaks. These are usually in non-patrolled locations with limited resources and sometimes facing the worst possible results.

Our patrol competition this year was hotly contested with bragging rights going to Bellambi Surf Life Saving Club winning overall. It was a very tight contest for the top 3 clubs with all 17 clubs within a few points of each other which shows a level of commitment, skill and professionalism that promotes us as the leading water safety organisation in the Illawarra and Australia.

I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate all the nominated and recipients of Surf Life Saving Awards of Excellence awards. It is always a hard job to have just one winner with the quality of Lifesavers in Surf Life Saving Illawarra. All nominations represent an outstanding achievement for both their club & Branch in general.

I would like to acknowledge the outstanding commitment that our Local Members continue to contribute to Surf Life Saving Illawarra. Yet again, Ryan Park MP, Lee Evans MP and Paul Scully MP have made it possible to replace vital Support Operations equipment. This year we were able to upgrade our Duty Officer’s vehicle, which is an invaluable support that keeps our patrol support operations going and to the highest of levels of reliability and professionalism.

It would be remiss of me not to mention the invaluable relationships we have with other rescue organisations and services being Wollongong City Council, Police, Ambulance, SES among others that all work together to provide essential services when emergencies occur.

I look forward to the new season and new challenges

Jayson Norris | Director of Lifesaving

Education Report

Firstly, a big thank you to Matt Theris for his service to Education in the Illawarra this season and his support while getting up to speed with the role.

The Education Advisors have also been a great help. Thank you to Lisa Cox for your effort and enthusiasm in promoting Surf Lifesaving and Surf Safety. Lisa has recently stepped down from the role to concentrate more on her club and will be sorely missed. Thank you to Stacey Paddon who stepped into the Course Co-ordinator role with great enthusiasm. Stacey has already had a great impact on cross-club co-ordination and participation and I’m sure this will only increase.

This is where I'd like to see Education in the Illawarra move toward, with clubs becoming more responsible for running courses, and with Branch being responsible for compliance. This is in line with the decentralised model that SLSNSW is implementing, and will hopefully reduce the burnout in our future Directors of Education.

Thank you to all TAFs in the branch who have stepped up to gain and maintain their Certificate IV TAE accreditation. I know first-hand how difficult this has been and I encourage all clubs to do everything they can to support their TAFs, who have to spend considerable amounts of time in accreditation and professional development.

Congratulations to our 2017/18 Awards of Excellence nominees and winners; Trainer of the Year - Scott Gordon (Bulli); Assessor of the Year - Craig Walker (Coledale); Facilitator of the Year - Jamie Caldwell (Bulli); and Community Education Program of the Year - Woonona SLSC.

Once again thank you to all Trainers, Assessors and Facilitators, I look forward to working with you through the coming season.

Member Services Report

Member Services – wow – what does it not include - Recruitment, Retention, Recognition. Member Development, Junior Activities, Member Protection, Club Sustainability, Youth! It has been a busy year and I would like to thank our clubs that have got on board and attended various Member Services meetings and contributed. Our first meeting of the season was well attended by clubs and was a brainstorming session which gave me a great outline of where/what we need to do – it is a work in progress.

Club Open Day/Registration Day, Appeals Week, IT training, SLS Illawarra Awards of Excellence – some of the regular programs Branch and our clubs are committed to each season.

Thank you to Coledale, Thirroul, Bulli, Woonona and Bellambi (Shellharbour from South Coast Branch also participated) that committed to Riding the Wave Inclusive Program. This program is now in its 3rd year and gives children with disabilities the opportunity to be involved with Nippers and learn surf safety skills. Thank you to Office of Sport for their continuing support and Holden for much needed funds for equipment and rash vests.

Major push from SLSA and SLSNSW this past 12 months and continuing into season 2018/19, is Member Protection and Safeguarding our Children and Young People. At Illawarra, we have had Member Protection Information Officer (MPIO) training for clubs. We are in the process of creating a network of MPIO’s across the branch so we can help each other out if necessary.

This season saw the formation of our Youth Panel. Thank you to our young people of our Branch that have embraced this initiative. Again, this season has been about planning and the youth have some great ideas coming to fruition in season 2018/19. Thanks to Shannon Fox (Wollongong City) for taking on the role of Youth Adviser for 2017/18 – your energy is contagious! If anyone needs any sort of motivation, please come along to our youth meetings – the future of our organisation is in very good hands!

Congratulations to all our SLS Illawarra Awards of Excellence finalists and eventual winners of whom then represented Illawarra at the SLSNSW Awards of Excellence. Well done to Tegan Robertson (Bellambi) announced the inaugural SLSNSW Youth Volunteer of the Year.

Further in this report is a list of all our attendees at various SLSNSW and Australia member development programs. Thank you to all the clubs and members that nominate for these programs.

Thank you to the members that I have called upon during the season for a variety of reasons including being part of SLS Illawarra Awards of Excellence (AOE) Working Party, AOE judging panels, helping with interviews/selection for development programs.

It has been a busy but, I think a productive, first season for myself as Director of Member Services, with a lot of conversation, planning and preparing direction for the 2018/19 season.

Surf Sports Report

Another productive season in surf sports within the Illawarra Branch. The surf skills that members learn whilst training & competing definitely makes them a better surf life saver. Surf Sports for some can be a yearly commitment with major championships for pool rescue, IRB racing & surf board riding happening during the winter months, then of course our normal carnival season during summer.

An overview of the past season saw the Sydney Water Surf Series enter into its 16th season with just over 1100 athletes competing over 4 rounds in November & December. This is the longest running & most successful series within NSW and we should be proud of the series. We are very lucky to have the sponsorship of Sydney Water, FINZ Swimwear & InFront Surf Boards for the series, it is greatly appreciated. Thanks goes to the hard-working Sydney Water Surf Series Committee that makes this happen, namely Keith Caldwell, Dave Greene, Michael Jennett, Maria Caldwell, Dennis Allan, Alan Parsons, Alan Beveridge (South Coast Branch).

Our SLSI Surf Sports Development Program again worked well this season with U12-U19 surf/craft members from at least 10 clubs get involved. I believe you could really see the improvement over the season, during the Sydney Water Series and leading into the major championships at the later part of the season. Massive thank you to Scott Jones who ran this program (assisted in coaching by Jake Hogarth).

SLSI Inter-Branch Team competed well at the 2017 SLSNSW Inter-Branch Championships in December at Stockton each SLSC. Some great team & individual performances. Thank you to the management team for looking after the team over the weekend, it is always greatly appreciated. Congratulations to our members that gained higher honours in our Inter-Branch team and as NSW & AUS representatives in teams and programs.

The SLSI Junior Development Carnival in January at Bellambi SLSC is always a good carnival, no results taken, great to see officials, water safety, coaches, managers helping kids/clubs in the development stage of surf sports involvement. The Warilla Bowls Boat Series continued, congratulations to the organising committee, all the crews from clubs who supported this series.

The Blue Scope WIN Community Partners Branch Championships where held in February at Sandon Point SLSC for the Juniors & Bulli SLSC for the Seniors. This year saw the first ever championships split over two clubs. The carnivals were well run by both clubs. We had good numbers in the juniors but seniors, masters & boats were down.

A summary of Illawarra, & Australian Surf Life Saving Championship results are in this Annual Report. Well done to everybody on their achievement, whether it was making finals, reaching personal goals set, competing in a team event or being lucky enough to winning medals. It’s all about developing as a surf sports athlete, understanding the mental & physical commitment to training, engaging in team activities and most importantly about the social & fun times competing for your club.

Thank you to our surf sports wider family who assisted as surf sports advisors, officials, worked on varying commitments to make events happen, anyone that volunteered to assist at carnivals, water safety, team managers and to clubs who hosted carnivals.

A big thank you to Keith & Maria Caldwell and Amy Vella in the Branch office for her valuable assistance throughout the year.

I will not be standing for the next two seasons (2019/20 & 2020/21) and would like to encourage someone to come forward that may be interested during the coming season to get a head start into the Director of Surf Sports role.

Media Advisor Report

As the 2017/18 season closes, Surf Life Saving Illawarra’s members, from our 17 surf clubs, can reflect on their achievements of keeping beach goers safe between the red and yellow flags with “No Lives Lost”.

Volunteer lifesavers performed an incredible 427 rescues and close to 10,000 preventative actions. Tragically, 5 drownings occurred during the off season at unpatrolled beaches throughout the year. This created an unprecedented media interest with the Surf Life Saving Illawarra Branch working closely with our local media.

Prior to the 2017/18 season commencing, we worked with James Wilson from 9 News Illawarra to promote the season launch and include our surf safety tips and awareness, rip currents, how to spot a rip, what options do you have to get out of a rip and what to do if caught in a rip and a rescue demonstration in an IRB, using GoPro footage up close, was aired.

After a tragic weekend, the , 9 News Illawarra & WIN NEWS Illawarra were invited to Woonona Beach where they received a first-hand experience information session on rip currents where an ocean dye was released into the surf to show the effects of rip currents, surf safety awareness and a rescue demonstration on a Rescue Water Craft (RWC). This valuable information highlights the importance of swimming at patrolled beaches and to ALWAYS SWIM BETWEEN THE FLAGS.

On a positive note, the media continued to cover an array of stories including:

• hazardous surf warnings • surf safety tips • surf sports and local carnivals • lifesaving exchange program • lifesaving patrols • member achievements and SLSI Awards of Excellence • community service announcements • major rescues • after hour incidents • drownings

Finally, I would like to thank 9 News Illawarra, WIN NEWS Illawarra, Prime 7, Illawarra Mercury, 97.3 ABC Illawarra, i98fm and Wavefm 96.5 for their continued support in getting vital surf safety messages out to our community.

Helensburgh Stanwell Park SLSC

This report is to highlight the achievements and conduct of Helensburgh Stanwell Park Surf Life Saving Club in its 111th season of serving the public and providing a safe environment for the pubic to use Stanwell Park Beach, training life savers, competing at surf carnivals and providing a breeding ground for future life savers.

Life Saving The club had a good year in respect to life saving, with a strong patrolling presence on the beach over the entire season. Patrols were very well attended, even during the peak competition times and towards the end of the season. While numbers were down slightly on the previous season and some members didn’t complete the entire season due to either work commitments and personal issues the clubs patrol strength was consistent.

A demonstration of the commitment to life saving was on Saturday, 20 January 2018 when a call came from SurfCom that members of the public would need to be evacuated from the Royal National Park due to an approaching bushfire. A message to the clubs “Emergency Callout Team” and subsequent message to the patrolling membership resulted in more than 20 members attending. During the afternoon patrols members supported emergency services with the airlifting of an injured patient from the rescue at the north end of the beach, including setting up a helicopter landing area in the park. Fortunately, the evacuation did not proceed and after about 4 hours of readiness the Emergency Callout Team was stood down. The response by members did not go unnoticed by emergency services or SLSNSW with notes of praise received after the event.

Despite the lengthy season, 22 members attended 100% of their patrols, with many doing beyond their rostered requirements. These members were not just the patrol captains, but across all levels of the patrolling membership from SRC holders upwards to new members to long serving. Congratulations to all members who achieved their 100% patrol attendance.

Stanwell Park Beach is becoming increasing popular, as it is really the first beach that many people see when coming from the western and south-western suburbs of Sydney. Sadly, many of the visitor are very unfamiliar with the surf and the rules of swimming at the beach. Many shy away from swimming between the flags due to cultural reasons, our members do their best to persuade swimmer to “Swim Between the Flags” but for some the message is often lost in translation. I applaud the patience and willingness of our patrol members who vigilantly patrol the whole beach to ensure that there are no lives lost on Stanwell Park Beach during patrolling hours.

Sponsorship and Fundraising The club enjoyed continued support from its long-term sponsors, including Tradies and Peabody. The club welcomed a new sponsor at the end of the season, who has come on-board to support the Boaties.

Helensburgh Stanwell Park SLSC cont.:

WestFund donated $10,000 towards the cost of a new surf boat and has agreed to further funding based on members signing up for private health insurance thru WestFund.

The “Boaties Trivia Night” was a great success with $3,580 being raised thru ticket sales, donations, raffles, coin toss and the silent auction.

The club signed onto the “Return and Earn” Program thru Envirobank, hosting a few Community Return & Earn Days towards the end of the season.

A scaled back Appeals Day raised just over $2,000 for the club which is down on previous years.

Competition The Boaties continued to be the backbone of the club’s competition group this season, 2 crews performing consistently well through a long boat rowing season culminating in the U/23 Women’s Crew competing in Perth at the Aussies. The U/19 Men’s crew finished 16th in the national rankings, which was a great effort for their first full season rowing together. A great season for all the crews and their loyal band of parents/supporters.

Jack Bridges toughed it out on his own all season, but it had rewards. Jack picked up a Bronze Medal at the Aussies and Gold at the State Championships. This was all on top of strong performances throughout the year including being selected in the Illawarra Branch Team for the NSW Interbranch Championships. Awesome effort Jack, and a well-deserved Highly Commended for Surf Life Saving Illawarra Youth Athlete of the Year.

Going solo as well was Ian Manley. Ian wore the Red, White and Blue with pride at the State and Australian Championships. Ian picked up a Gold in the 30-39 Years Champion Lifesaver at State and a Silver in the 30-39 Years Champion Life Saver at Aussies. Great effort Ian.

After an absence of 25 years, the club has made a return to IRB Racing. Driven by new member Anthony Ashley, a small group of members have been happily training since January 2018 and started competition in the NSW IRB Premiership. While not winning any races, they have been honing their skills and improving the equipment in readiness for a full-on assault in the 2018/19 season. Great work and dedication Anthony Ashley, Matt Webber, Barry McGuinness and Guy Ezzedine.

Members Development and Training 11 Surf Rescue Certificates, 14 Bronze Medallions, 1 IRB Crew, 1 Basic Beach Management Award, and 3 Advanced Resuscitation Techniques were gained by members during season, along with 140 Surf Awareness Awards for the nippers.

Junior Activities – Seagulls Ava Rushton and Gemma Gallagher represented the club in the Illawarra Junior Life Saving of the Year program, with Ava being selected. Ava also attended the SLSNSW Junior Life Saver of the Year Camp. Both Gemma and Ava did the club proud during the interview phase of the program. Well done to both the girls.

A highlight of the season was the U/13 Girls Beach Relay Team winning their 2nd State Title. Maddie, Abbey, Sabine and Mia are such cool customers, taking everything in their stride…. even if they don’t really have a coach.

Helensburgh Stanwell Park SLSC cont.:

These girls are very talented and between them picked up all the club’s medals at State. Sabina 2nd U/13 Female Beach Sprint and Beach Flags, and Maddie 3rd U/13 Female Beach Sprint.

11 Seagulls transition to the Senior Club during the season, with all of them starting the patrolling career. They are all taking the skills learned during the time as a nipper and applying them to real life patrols.

Member Retention Retaining members in a voluntary organisation is always a challenge with so many competing interests, it is hard to inspire members to give up their time to stand on the water’s edge and watch out for people that they have no relationship with. Fortunately, we have over 100 members who are willing do this, but how do we keep them in the club and what opportunities can the club give them?

Surf Boat Rowing is great for retention, as you need 4 members for a crew plus a sweep that gives you 5 patrol members, another crew another 5-patrol member, and so on.

Luckily this season the IRB Racing Team forms, and while not bringing in any new members yet, it provides another avenue for members to pursue, and it maintains interest all year round.

Finally To the Executive and Management Committee, thank you for your support during the season, we are making great progress with sponsorship activities, patrols are great, competition is thriving and club governance is strong.

Thanks to every member who contributed to the on-going success of the club.

Coalcliff SLSC

For a club at the heart of a town with just 83 houses, Coalcliff continues to punch well above its weight. The Nippers program has gone from strength to strength, and it is a pleasure to see so many kids and young families enjoying the opportunity to grow up by the ocean just as I did. Our lifesaving services maintained its excellent record of providing a safe and enjoyable beach environment for our members and visitors, whilst also providing RWC Support Operations for our friends and neighbours across the Northern Illawarra region.

We continue to mourn the loss of the club’s Bombie Bar fundraising initiative and are working through the bureaucracy of council in the hope that these valuable and community-building events return to their rightful home. Fortunately, we have found support and advocacy in many other levels of the community, and I would like to highlight the fantastic contributions of our volunteers, advocacy and support from our state representative Lee Evans MP and the new Strategic Plan and vision presented by SLSNSW as excellent signs for the future of our club and region.

Of course, I huge thankyou is also owed to the Coacliff committee, who make my job easy through their tireless efforts across more fronts that I could possibly recount here.

We are looking forward to 2018/19 season, and opening the doors to our community like never before.

Leo Stevens | President

Scarborough Wombarra SLSC

What a season! Our tiny community were challenged greatly this season, with fluctuating numbers, a number of issues arising with upkeep and with the loss of our longest serving patrolling member. Some positives helped to keep our heads above the tide line to saw us through. We were blessed with fabulous conditions for Nippers activities, which extended to limited closed beach days, and very pleasant conditions all round. Once again, the patrolling numbers breach was filled with the dedicated, amazing members, who continuously give generously of their time, and do so with a chilled demeanour, and welcoming smile, and without whom, the club would not survive. Another stellar effort was achieved by our Nippers cohort; Tom in the lead, Shane, and Tony, and a number of nipper parents taking control of our young lifesavers in the making. With the safety of our community in mind, we continue to provide a valuable service, and offer a safe haven for the many.

The never-ending battle against the elements to maintain our gear is held in check by the generous donations from the community, not only in time, by in support for events and schemes run by the surf club. The generosity of businesses throughout the area, never ceases to amaze, with many prizes collected for our annual fundraiser, thank you! Special thanks must go to the businesses that stepped up to the plate at the last minutes, when others were unavailable to attend. Of course, IGA deserve our heartfelt thanks for providing BBQ supplies throughout the season, and again for the awesome platters for our fundraiser.

What a fabulous Nippers Season! We were grateful for the number of times we were able to complete surf activities this season, with only two beach sessions, has to be a record! Whilst there were only a few keen to complete further afield; well done Sean, Jake, Lilly and Manna, all our nippers rose to the challenge, and showed a never-ending enthusiasm and much enjoyment every Sunday, no matter the activity. After a brief year’s break from inter club Nippers sessions, Coledale offered to host a tri club event in March, and all the nippers thoroughly appreciated the experience. We farewell Tom Summerhayes from his position of Nippers coordinator and thank him for his unwavering dedication to the nippers and their parents, and for the most relaxed and enthusiastic sessions to date. Thanks Tom, we appreciate the work you have put in. We also welcome our new Nippers coordinators, and thank them for putting up their hands; Bec Marfia and Angela Fleming, I’m sure the transition will be smooth.

Scarborough Wombarra SLSC cont.:

This year’s club person of the year was awarded to a patrolling member who drives 4 hours to complete his patrolling requirements, every second Sunday, stays all day, and even comes up in the off season to attend to the ATV and motors. He has undertaken course this season to ensure that he is able to fill the gaps that the club has for patrols, and he dedicates much of his spare time to the club. Congratulations Brent Buchan, on receiving this award and for being nominated Club Captain for the upcoming season, well done, and thank you.

Congratulations must go to Sean Ritter for his sterling effort this season, not only during Nippers sessions, but also include his efforts at branch and state carnivals. The culmination of all his efforts throughout the season was the achievement of ’Junior Lifesaver of the Year’, a well-deserved award, and payoff for all the hard work this season. Well done Sean.

The club is still reeling from the shock of losing the most committed member of our club in May of this season. David Denton was a keen participant in everything to do with club (branch, state, and national too) protocol and policy, and he would be the first one to inform you of incorrect technique, should you not adhere to the standards. He was a font of knowledge about almost everything to do with the running of the club, and the roles of everybody within the club, and he could wax lyrical about the most mundane of procedures, at length. He was most at home is his amazingly long-lasting wetsuit (not sure if I should use it, or frame it!), directing SRC’s and Patrollers alike, or competitors in his role as an official, or gear stewards in other clubs in his role as scrutineer, and right up until the end of the season, he was on the beach. Friend, mentor, teacher, fellow patroller; he will be sorely missed, and fondly remembered, RIP DTD (1961-2018).

Once again, we face the challenge of filling our patrol roster for the upcoming season, with more than 3 patrols worth of members retiring or moving on. Recruitment is our key, and hopefully with all of the enthusiasm inspired by the recent State Conference, we may see new recruits fill key rolls within the club and patrols. We have made some inroads this season, but we have a long way to go before we can rest comfortably in knowing we have done our best. I can’t wait to see how the next season pans out.

Bindi Adams | President

Coledale SLSC

Congratulations to all members of the club for their work and efforts throughout the 2017/18 season. Once again, we have contributed to the Surf Lifesaving movement and to the local community as well.

Because of this work, the club and its members were nominated for a record number of categories at the Awards of Excellence, who were winners in 5 awards:

• Services Team of the Year: Meritorious Awards Committee • Assessor of the Year: Craig Walker • Young Lifesaver of the Year: Riley Van Anen • Patrol Captain of the Year: Daren Weidner • Ted Marshall Memorial Surf Lifesaver of the Year: Anthony O'Donoghue

Congratulations to all these winners.

This season the club re introduced the 3-way carnival with Austinmer and Scarborough Wombarra. This event introduces all of our Nippers to the carnival atmosphere, encouraging them to participate in the regular Branch and State Carnivals. Coalcliff has expressed interest in participating in this event.

Once again, the club has supported the local community by being part of the Riding the Wave Inclusive Program for those with disabilities and funding support to the Lions Club, Illawarra Branch, Coledale Soccer Club, Coledale School, Coledale Hospital and Coledale Fire Brigade. This season, Chris Collimore, revised the bottle and can recycling program, introduced by SLSNSW, to raise money for surf clubs. He's involved the local RSL, Soccer club and the Campground to collect these containers and the money raised to go back to supporting the community.

Coledale again travelled to Sussex Inlet in January to provide a break for their limited number of patrolling members. It's a great weekend for us to assist other clubs and while we had good time, they excused us a little early on the Sunday patrol due to 50 metre waves and a 300km/h southerly.

The new club amenities were completed during the last season. These improvements go to ensure the club meets the demands of the changing diversity of its members.

Coledale participated in the Quality Club program again, and this year we were the only club in the Illawarra to achieve Silver status. The committee are to be congratulated for their work not only for this award, but in all aspects of running the club.

Late in the season, the club named our latest IRB the Danny Yew. A boat launch was held with many of our old and current members, family, campers and members of the community, gathering together to honour Danny's services to the Surf Club and local community. Not only will the boat be a great asset to the club, I think all drivers and crew will be privileged to take the boat out.

Coledale SLSC cont.:

Kye Pearsall won the Junior Club Person for his work throughout the season for his patrols and assistance during training and water safety.

Patrol Person went to Riley Van Anen for his many patrolling hours and awards he had gained during the season. Always being there to help other patrols and being part of the water safety team.

Kate Balding was named our Club Person with her many roles she performed during the season. Education Director, Patrol Captain and running the clubs U5's program showed she was a worthy recipient of this award.

Anthony O’Donoghue | President

Austinmer SLSC

Active members at Austinmer Surf Life Saving Club during the 2017/18 season completed a total of 2220 hours of patrolling duties. Well Done and thank you to all.

Our cadet membership increased by 11 surf lifesavers from the last season to make a current total of 16. This is very encouraging and bodes well for the future of the club. There were:

• 6 Active Juniors • 22 Active Seniors • 4 Long Service

We are hoping to train and enlist every one of the 151 Associate members to Active Patrolling duties this coming season. Yes! Ambitious, but we can try.

There are also 202 current Junior Activity members.

I hope each of you across all the categories had an enjoyable and productive year at Austinmer.

As evidenced by the patrol hours for the 2017/18 season, we had a slight increase in the number of members involved in patrolling duties. This translated into a slight decrease in average patrolling hours for all.

Congratulations to those members who achieved 100% this season, with quite a few achieving well over the minimum 50 hours needed to qualify. Thank you for the effort and dedication that you put in. well done also to the members who came excruciatingly close to the target.

Rescues more than doubled from last season and our dedicated men & women performed 61 of these, both with and without the aid of tubes, boards and IRB’s. there were 178 preventative actions and 65 cases of first aid administered, 5 lost children & 1 search.

The mass rescue performed by Robert Morgan’s patrol, detail the harrowing events of Sunday 21 January 2018 and show what our dedicated team of volunteers are truly capable of. What a great effort. Well done Rob, Troy Heffernan, Lisa Metcalfe & Gunther Enthaler.

It all comes back to keeping the public safe so that they can have a great day in the surf and at the beach in ever changing, sometimes potentially dangerous conditions, with a good majority of them lacking any awareness of the hazards that await.

Congratulations also to all the 2017/18 SLSA awards recipients this season. From the Surf Rescue, Radio, IRB, Silver Medallions, Resuscitations’ and Spinal Management Certificates to the Surf Aware, Surf Play, Surf Safe and Surf Smart awards of the Junior Activity recipients – great work.

This season the committee and membership congratulated last years Ted Marshall Memorial Surf Lifesaver of the Year, Gunther Enthaler, on his appointment to the Director of Education for the Illawarra Branch. Our monthly meeting minutes recorded that no Austinmer SLSC member has held such a high position at Branch level in quite a number of years.

The sad news of the passing of past member Dean Mercer this year, was felt by all the membership of our club. Dean gained his Bronze Medallion at Austinmer during the early 80’s. an outstanding cadet member and naturally gifted athlete, he won gold medals at the Illawarra Branch and NSW State Championships and then went on to win many more of the same as a junior, before being selected as a representative of the Illawarra Branch Team.

Sadly, this year also saw the passing of our oldest Life Member, John Davies. A continuous member for 35 seasons. John held, at one time or another, almost every position of importance within the club.

Austinmer SLSC cont.:

I’d like to thank Hayden Enthaler who stepped up for his first year as Club Captain. He’s done a great job overseeing an amazing bunch of volunteers and handled the difficult and sometimes stressful job of rostering, with no small degree of professionalism. Hayden leads by example and under his supervision, a number of members achieved their 70 patrolling hours for the season, one person came in at over 120 hours and eighteen people clocked up 50hours. Great work!

It’s great to see that the Orca’s had a successful and fun filled season also. Thanks to Chris and the committee, the Age Managers and all the parents and supporters for putting in the hard yards to develop Junior Lifesavers.

Well done to John Patison who represented Austinmer paddling a ski in the George Bass Surf Boat Marathon. He won the Batemans Bay to Moruya leg and placed 2nd in the event overall.

Finally, thank you to all the office bearers for the season of 2017/18. In particular the Club Executive and Management Committee. Special mention going to Club Secretary David Fitch, who was instrumental in documenting and helping facilitate our applications for various forms of grant funding, which have made it possible to initiate noticeable improvements to the club. Also, for his work in developing the WordPress website.

Thank you to Steve Perkiss and Ian Foreman, two perennial stalwarts, who just keep giving their time and knowledge, making a great club better.

Thirroul SLSC

It is with pride that I make comment on the events of the season for Thirroul SLSC. The data analysis of lifesaving on the beach clearly makes a statement that we are alive and well as we protect and keep our beach safe for our community and visitors. We certainly can celebrate another season that has been successful, eventful and rewarding.

We are now a proud 110 years old and…getting better with age. This season I took stock of our heritage and was inspired when chatting to so many of our life members and locals that all have a story to tell about our club. This was most significant at our 110year celebration event held in September. Many friends and members returned for this anniversary to chat about old times and celebrate a significant milestone in surf life saving history in Australia. My ‘takeaways’ from these discussions include the recognition of the many men and women that built the club over many years so that we can enjoy a structure that is one of the best. A club built by locally donated materials and local labour that wanted this surf club to be an integral part of the Thirroul community. I also confirmed my belief of the importance and significance of our club crest, which stands proudly on the front of our club. This crest represents all lifesavers that have served on Thirroul beach and those that support our club, past and present. This culture hasn’t stopped as we see current members continue to support one another on patrol, in competition and in the ongoing upkeep to provide members and community great facilities.

This year has been a very busy time in our club with so many events to take note of. I acknowledge, and am thankful for, the Directors and Committee leaders who met regularly to make decisions on behalf of all members. We have all been conscious of our roles and tried our best to keep the future in mind as we plan and deliver change and improvement. It is with pleasure that I acknowledge the contributions of a lady that was honoured with Life Membership at our presentation night. Julie Turner has committed so much to Thirroul Surf Club and truly deserves the recognition of being our first active female life member.

Anne Walton, Julie Turner and Jeff Wall also shared a significant milestone for our club this season. The two ladies were recognised as our first female lifesavers to achieve 25 years in active patrol service and we are so proud of them. Jeff Wall was presented with his 50year service medal as well. Not content with just patrols, all have held committee positions for many years and have been part of carnival management and event organisation. Without them, our club would not be as strong. We look forward to having them on board for many more years.

Our club does not exist without the wonderful effort of our patrol teams. I certainly appreciate the time they commit to keeping our beach safe and demonstrating the skills as lifesavers. Our data speaks for itself, as we executed 52 successful rescues. Our 818 preventative actions ensured we maintained a safe aquatic environment once again.

Thirroul SLSC cont.:

This season we mourned the loss of some great friends and members of our club. Each of us have opportunities to contribute to our club and we honour and pay tribute to the ‘man with the beard’, Mr Mark Ryan. A gentle giant that helped our club in so many capacities from boats to IRB’s. He supported our competitors and officiated at all levels of competition - Illawarra, New South Wales and Australia. Mark was 61 years of age.

Vale Laurie Kelly AM: A life member of our club, serving 4 years as Secretary and 10 years as President between 1949/50 and 1962/63. He was a successful competitor in surf, belt, R & R and also a sweep of Thirroul's boat crews. Laurie officiated at all levels of competition - Illawarra, New South Wales and Australia. Laurie Kelly served as the Member for Corrimal in the New South Wales Parliament for 20 years and was Speaker of the House for 12 of these years. Laurie was 89 years of age.

Early in the season (September) we all gathered for a significant ‘paddle out’. We came together to pay respect to Dean Mercer OAM and his family. Dean was a member of Thirroul SLSC and a significant figure in the surf sports arena. Dean was synonymous with the iron man event, winning many Australian and international events. The paddle out was a huge success and an appropriate homage to his talents and commitment as a lifesaver.

I also acknowledge a dear friend of our club, Mr Dave Denton who was our ‘go to man’ during gear inspections, assessments and officiating at carnivals up and down the coast. A former president of Scarborough Wombarra SLSC and Life Member of Illawarra Branch. Sadly missed, David was 57 years of age.

This year we resurrected the Ronnie Morris Memorial Golf Day. This was a huge success thanks to the IRB team and their organisation. Events like this raise valuable funds for the club and it was great to see we haven’t lost our atrocious golf swings yet. Thank you to all our sponsors on this day and those that hacked their way around the course.

Our club jumped on board this season with the "Riding the Wave Inclusive Program" initiative. This was an inclusive surf program for children and youth with a disability. With a one-on-one ratio, each participant had the opportunity to participate in:

• sand-based activities including flags, sprints, parachute games and ball games • water activities including wades and board riding

Thank you to Tyler Scott, Dale and Darci Air for their commitment to this program and the enjoyment that they gave to the new members of our club in the "Riding the Wave Inclusive Program”.

Thirroul SLSC cont.:

In July we heard a 2 stroke IRB engine fire up. Then another! Then another, as Thirroul SLSC hosted the Australian Inflatable Rescue Boat Championships for the second time. What a great event to bring to the Illawarra and Northern Suburbs. One that was received so well by the 3000 visitors to our community. The enormity of this event, hit home as members and locals saw the gear storage compound for equipment take over the reserve behind the club. 80 fantastic members volunteered their time to make this event a success with SLSA, along with our local business friends who we owe our gratitude. Once again, the Lion’s Club were there with pride to assist again.

The challenging conditions kept everyone enthralled as young and old appreciated the skills of our lifesavers in action. This would not have been achievable if it were not for the Championship Organising Committee of Jeff Bõdy, Julie Turner, Andrew Turner, Nicole Air, Dianne Gillett, Emma Lockhart, Ian Sakoff and Ben Coterill.

Congratulations to all our competitors at Branch, State and Australian level as they triumphed individually and as a team. We acknowledge our new Australian Champions Jeff Wall, Darci Air, Jason Cross, Russell Gibson, Ross Taylor, Robert Lumby, Alison Montgomery, Nadine Egan-Scott, Anne Walton, Michelle Emmett, Jayden Keys & Duncan Scott.

To top our year off we were successful in gaining a grant from the Government Surf Club Facility funds to assist in our renovations. I thank our building committee and Kim Shipton for their effort to submit and manage this project. We are certainly getting a great return for our club at the best possible price. The new facilities will include changes to our gym position, board and ski storage increased and a double trailer storage space.

Finally, I thank our wonderful sponsors and supporters. At Thirroul Surf Club, we see our relationship with you as a two-way street. Whenever we can help you… we will. We thank you for your generous support and look forward to continuing this relationship for many years.

Next season will be another exciting year for our club as we complete stage 4 of the renovations, improve our club structures and plan events to include everyone. We look forward to seeing you on the beach, at a club fundraiser or a social gathering to support the Thirroul club.

Remember;

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” – Helen Keller

See you on the beach.

Sandon Point SLSC

On behalf of Sandon Point SLSC, I would like to thank each club and the Branch of rather continuing Support of our club. Sandon Point continues to foster a community-based commitment to Surf Lifesaving through its successful Nippers program and lifesaving patrols. The club encourages members to believe in their ability as lifesavers and to take lifesaving as a serious and necessary community responsibility. This is achieved through the implementation and maintenance of high standards of patrols, vigilance and beach management. This is driven by a management committee that is enthusiastic and dedicated to ensuring that the ongoing training of members, the overseeing of patrol standards and the encouragement of social interaction across all levels of the club and inter- clubs, all combines to have a successful and happy club.

Season 2017/18 saw our club face a busy season on the beach. There were numerous obstacles faced and overcome, some very challenging days and a CPR incident handled well by the patrol. The incident and the aftermath were handled with the care, mateship and camaraderie and brought out the best in people, both those who were there on the day but also in an ongoing capacity.

Sandon Point this year hosted the Junior Branch Carnival, to say that it was an outstanding success would be an understatement. This event would not have happened without the tireless efforts of the Junior Committee. The carnival planning and organisation has to be built from the ground up. The help from a great deal of people who all pitched in was typical “Sandon Point”, no fuss, just getting it done.

There are challenges ahead for not only our club but also Surf Life Saving as a whole. The beaches are becoming busier and volunteers are being asked to stretch themselves further and further. There is a fear of a real disconnect between those on the sand and those making policy and procedure. However, with that comes opportunities to be innovative, to drive change and for the Illawarra to be leaders in Surf Life Saving moving into the future.

Bulli SLSC

Season 2017/18 felt like coming home, back into our surf club after the previous season living out of containers & tents basically. Even though we only received keys a couple of days before patrols started, our hardworking committee managed to have our surf club, bar Stage 2 upstairs ready to be operational.

In saying that Stage 2 of the refurbishment extension is moving along well with our Building Steering Committee guided by Craig Parsons our Project Manager working tirelessly to have Stage 2 completed during the 2018-2019 season with an official opening of our premises, stay tuned for this exciting development.

I must thank our Board of Directors who guide the club through the season along with our Management Committee, these ladies & gentleman have done a great job in making sure we are financially secure for the future, developing our members in all aspects of surf club life, working together to building better relationships with the community and most importantly looking after the health & welfare of our members. People can be time poor in today’s society with everything they do, but our club members that put their hand up for a job understand their roles & responsibilities, to that I appreciate the work that you do!

Please take time to read this Annual Report, hopefully we have captured our major highlights for the season. Thank you to our Director of Administration Paul Hennessy pulling all the information together. Paul put his hand up this season to get back on the committee & really shone as all of our Directors of Administration (previously Club Secretary) have done so in the proud history of our surf club. He was the glue that made things happen during the season, direct in his actions with the surf club as No.1 priority.

As I normally do in my report, I try to touch on aspects of the club & highlight ‘good’ things that we do. Yes of course we do have hiccups, issues and matters that need addressing during the season like all clubs, but that’s what makes me proud of members taking on roles, we work together to overcome these road bumps building towards the future.

In Life Saving & Education which go together to build capability and capacity of the club we do an outstanding job. 105 years with no lives lost whilst our members patrolled the beach, continues to be a proud record we have. To everybody that made a commitment to patrolling this season and gaining new lifesaving awards, thank you, I am sure the community feels safe on our beach. Great job and thankyou to our Life Saving & Education Team Scott Gordon, Jamie Thorpe, Nathan Flint, Markus Meier-Lindner, Garry Arnold, Jamie Caldwell & Renee Sharman.

Surf Sports continues to be a high achiever for us. A summary of our surf sports, rep teams & major achievements is located in another section of this Annual Report. Some great results right across surf/craft, pool rescue in seniors & juniors plus our boats remained strong throughout the season with the maroon and gold cap on the podium & in finals at major championships. To be crowned Surf Life Saving Illawarra Champion Surf Sports Club for the 11th consecutive season is outstanding, it really highlights our surf sports program within the club is working well. Massive thank you to all of our club coaches, the time & effort that you put in is valued by the club & our members. Special mention to our Open Men’s Boat Crew on achieving something pretty special, winning their 5th consecutive NSW Open Boat Title, wow a record that will stand for a very long time I predict. This season we hosted the 2018 SLSI Senior Branch Championships. The call went out for assistance and did they come on the day 5.30am to 4pm our members worked extremely hard making it a rousing success. Drinks back at Bulli Workers Club just topped the day off.

Bulli SLSC cont.:

Our Nippers had a great season with increased numbers, our junior activity committee members lead by Shawn van Duin helped to contribute in club activities, most notably Sunday mornings. Seeing kids having fun and learning about surf safety & awareness is our goal. Competing for the club is a bonus but developing their skills to one day becoming a patrolling member of our surf lifesaving club is the priority.

One thing that does make me proud is our community involvement actively out in the community maximizing our profile and showing the value of our members when hosting and assisting events; Woonona Bowling Club Heart Foundation & Cancer Council Charity Bowls Day, Shannon Eckstein Nipper Clinic, SLSI Riding the Wave Special Needs Program, SLSI Senior Branch Championships, Illawarra Motor Neurone Disease Walk, Soul Fit Kids Fun Run & SLSI Blood Bank Drive.

To our sponsors & supporters, thank you thank you…your support and continued association with our surf club enables us to ensure our financial sustainability and work towards our objectives of having first class lifesaving equipment available to our members, deliver the training, support and services to assist with development in education, lifesaving & surf sports to our members. Special mention to Darryl, Sandra & the Board of Directors at Bulli Workers Club, our major corporate sponsor & ‘watering hole’ since the 60’s.

Awards Dinner hosted by our own Nathan Flint as MC was another great night. Numbers were down (close to 90) with over 40 official apologies, but that didn’t stop our members, guests & sponsors having a great night. As always, the DVD’s produced were great & I thank Ingrid Cardillo for her time & effort putting these together. It remains part of our history & great memories to look back on. Congratulations to Callum Sweeny (Under 16 Club Person) & Zara Sharman (U19 Club Person) on winning 2 of the major awards on the night. I was also very humbled & embarrassed to receive the Club Person award, to have the crowd on the night give me a standing ovation was very emotional and I thank those that voted for me. Check out the section highlighting our Awards Night and profiles of our award winners.

Great night at the SLSI Awards of Excellence in June saw the club acknowledged as Surf Life Saving Illawarra Club of the Year! It does really show we are doing things right and this award is for all the members that make a positive impact into the club, couldn’t do it without you guys & girls.

The club also picked up Surf Sports Club of the Year; along with Jamie Caldwell Education Facilitator of the Year; Scott Gordon Education Trainer of the Year; Scott Jones & Jake Hogarth Surf Sports Coach of the Year; Keith Caldwell Volunteer of the Year; our Open Men’s George Bass Crew winning Surf Sports Team of the Year (Paul Jones, Albert Smeaton, Izsak Lunney, Kyle Mercer, Lachlan O’Grady, Adam Barlow, Paul Barlow, Aron Davis & Mitchell Roberts); Lucas Ottaway Junior Athlete of the Year & Zara Sharman high commendation Young Athlete of the Year.

Stage 2 of our surf building refurbishment & extensions which is the fit out of the extensions upstairs is progressing well. A big thank you to Craig Parsons (junior parent) and managing director of LDJ Group for assisting with his expertise as the Surf Club Project Manager. Craig has worked well with the Building Steering Committee budgeting for the works to be completed during season 2018-2019. It is exciting, the disabled lift access to level 1 has been installed, the gym is being restored to its normal capacity, a new state of the art entry access system has been installed. Work continues upstairs and I am sure every member can’t wait to see finished product & have a big official opening of the new and improved Bulli Surf Life Saving Club. Stage 2 basically upstairs which will see disabled lift access,

Bulli SLSC cont.:

secretary’s office, commercial kitchen, toilets (including disabled), storage area for table & chairs, audio visual system for training & education plus seating for 80-100 people for functions, training, education & meetings. Long overdue and much needed improved facilities for our future.

To receive a 2nd bite of the cherry with the 2017/18 SLSNSW Surf Facility Grant to the tune of $348,233.00 (special thanks to Gareth Ward Parliamentary Secretary for the Illawarra & South Coast), plus 2017 NSW Community Partnership Grant $25,000.00 from Ryan Park (State Member for Keira) made our project become a reality, it means not having to do heaps of fundraising & chasing sponsors for the building alone, now we can focus on our bright future.

Special mention to Barry Lowe (Director of Surf Sports) & Scott Gordon (Director of Life Saving) who both won’t be seeking re-election next season due to work & family commitments. Barry took on the new role in its first 2 seasons has done a great job managing our surf sports section. Scott has fulfilled his role for 5 seasons continually improving our life saving standard along with his lifesaving team. Thank you to both of you for your service.

Finally, I would like to express my appreciation to every member of the surf club that assisted in any role or committee position within the club, you all play an important role in our development as a surf lifesaving club. You name it we have them in bucket loads, all play an important role in the governance of our club whilst utilising their specialized skills within their respective section of the surf club. It’s about driving growth in membership & educates prepares & embraces people to join our club for the benefit of our members.

Thank you to my wife Maria for the all support & advice (sometimes noted lol). You do a hell of a lot of work that goes unnoticed.

Keith Caldwell | President

Woonona SLSC

The 2017/18 season was yet again another great season for Woonona SLSC, continuing our record of no lives lost whilst on patrol on Woonona beach. I would like to thank all members of our Club, especially the committee and executive members for their efforts during the season.

I would also like to specifically recognise our patrolling members for their vigilance and dedication this season. The quality of lifesaving provided on our beach was recognised this season through our club attaining runner up Patrolling Club of the Year.

On the competition front, the IRB team again had an outstanding season. They are a young and small team but achieve great results. They are all also outstanding members, with the majority of them assisting in every nipper day with either age managing or water safety and assisting with many other areas of our club taking on committee positions and helping out in any way.

Nippers at our club continues to be strong. It’s great to see the Nipper parents getting more and more involved in our club. It was great to see more Nippers going in Nipper’s competition this season, with 7 kids attending the Development Carnival and 14 kids attending Branch Championships. I look forward to seeing this momentum continue into next season, its great fun and experience for the kids to participate in these friendly competitions.

I would also like to mention and thank the special team of members who continue to be involved in our “Riding the Wave” Inclusive Nippers Program. This is a fantastic program and is very much enjoyed and appreciated by all the kids enrolled. And thank you so much to Brianna McInally who runs this each year for our club, she does a fantastic job.

Again, this year we have continued with improvements and renovations to our club building. We are looking forward to having newly renovated bathrooms, ladies’ bathrooms and a unisex family room.

Lastly, I would like to thank all members for their enthusiasm and commitment in making Woonona SLSC such a great club. I look forward to what our club can achieve next season.

Stacey Paddon | President

Bellambi SLSC

This past season has been a much more positive season than the last six, with a number of new members.

The 2017/18 season went well, with most of our members happy with the way the club is heading.

I would like to thank Bellambi Bowling Club for all the support over the year.

Last year I stressed that we needed to address our finances and how we need to have a regular income stream. Well we now have the new Cafe up and running, OLIVIE’S. We need the cafe to start us on our way to being self-sufficient and not relying on others.

I would like to highlight the other groups who use Bellambi Surf Club:

• The Community Cancer Links, use Bellambi Surf Club on Tuesday and Thursday

• Corrimal High School runs a learn to work program with BNC, one day a week

• BodyWeather Bellambi, a 4-day workshop for dancers and performers

• Bellambi Safety committee

• NSW Government, held Community Engagement Day with the Bellambi Community

• Wollongong Northern District Aboriginal Community, Bellambi NAIDOC

• Yoga three times a week

• Raw Faith Church

• Plus, Wollongong PCYC

These are just a few of the groups that use Bellambi Surf Club and it shows how we work with our local community.

We are also a member of Corrimal Chamber of Commerce.

This Club is not only doing this great work with the local Community and patrolling our beach each week, we are also going strong in carnivals.

At the 2018 Illawarra Awards of Excellence night Bellambi won:

Surf Sports Master Athlete of the Year - Gina Crick Surf Sports Official of the Year – Jaclyn Percy (Highly Commended) Junior Activity Volunteer of the Year - Sue Joy Young Volunteer of the Year - Tegan Robertson Initiative of the Year Patrolling Club of the Year

Not bad for a little club like Bellambi!!

At the 2018 SLSNSW Awards of Excellence, Tegan Robertson won Young Volunteer of the Year.

Bellambi SLSC cont.:

I am so proud of what our Surf Club is doing and we will continue this journey to re build this great Club.

I hope in the coming season we will continue to grow the patrols and take the pressure off the few members who have put in so many hours last season.

The next few seasons we will again be down in numbers for our patrols, but we will grow.

SLSNSW have worked out we need about 56 patrolling members

Members must always be mindful that there is more to being a member of a surf club then just patrols. Even though patrolling is and always will be our number one priority, there are so many other activities required to run a surf club that members should also contribute to.

Thank you to the executive committee.

Craig Kershaw | President

Corrimal SLSC

I would like to congratulate all of our members on their continued work and service to Corrimal Surf Club. Congratulations must go to Scott Myers and his committee for their great work with the juniors and their impressive results at carnivals.

Special mention to Donald McAlister on becoming a Life Member of Surf Life Saving NSW.

We had two boat crews this year, an Open Men’s crew and an U23 Women’s crew, with both crews having mixed results. Congratulations to both crews on a good year.

Congratulations Ben Jenner on winning the Rowers Rower award and Catlin Williams on winning Most Improved Rower.

The 2017/18 season at Corrimal for our Nippers was an outstanding success. There were 163 Junior Lifesavers registered during the season which included a massive 70 children in the U6/7 age groups.

The beginning of the season kicked off well, with a fantastic sense of fun and learning in all the age groups and a special mention should be made to both Brett Townsend (U6’s) and Wayne White (U7’s) who both had huge numbers and still managed to keep the kids interested – big shoes to fill as unfortunately, Wayne and Brett will not be returning as Age Managers next season and will be missed.

Majority of our U13’s and our only U14, Melvin Spargo, completed their SRC and we will be looking forward to them continuing the progression to full patrolling members over the next few years. Thank you to everyone that helped with their training.

As usual, the assistance received from our Rookies with water safety on Sundays and at carnivals, was very much appreciated. Their dedication and positivity are a testament to the great training, advice and encouragement they have received from the club. Special thanks to Fletcher Atkins who hardly missed a session, from Sunday Nippers, board training and carnivals, he was the first to volunteer.

Board training sessions continued with greater numbers, this extra work helped build confidence and improve board handling skills. I can see this training being even more popular next season with the possible inclusion of beach training also. Thanks to Steve, Travis, Fletcher, Angus and Scarlet.

Corrimal had a great year at the carnivals with all competitors giving their best, exemplified by the efforts of Mayzie Brown and Breanna Whyte, who competed in every event they could possibly get to, never giving up. Sydney Water top performers were Jack Johanson 2nd and Cooper Morrison 3rd, both in beach events.

At Branch, Corrimal finished 3rd overall on the point score, our best result for a number of years. The standout performer was Isabella Wood with 3x individual Gold medals. Corrimal also picked up Gold in team events of March Past, All Age Beach Relay, U13 Beach Relay and U8 Wade Relay. Thanks to Tom and Lisa for training the March Past Team, continuing the run of Gold medals.

NSW State carnival saw 11 competitors travel to Swansea, again some great results for a small club. Overall Corrimal finished 32nd with 11 points, coming from Levi Sommers U13 - 3rd Flags and 5th Sprint, Cooper Morrison U10- 4th Sprint and the U13 Beach Relay team finishing 5th.

Most Outstanding Performer Team of the Year Levi Sommers – U13 Beach Relay – Sydney Water Series - 4th Beach Illawarra Branch Champions NSW State Titles - 3rd U13 Beach Flags NSW State Titles - 5th

Corrimal SLSC cont.:

Thank you to everyone on the committee and especially Karla Erven for doing a fantastic job as Club Captain.

On the beach, it was a successful year with no drownings or major incidents albeit the usual swimmers getting into trouble at the southern end of our beach.

It was great to see members competing for the first time and also so many members starting to turn up to our monthly meetings.

It isn’t just the Lifesavers that keeps us going but also the hard work of the committee behind the scenes.

We also introduced an internal patrol audit competition to both help increase the knowledge base of our patrolling members and to also help us decide who would win the prestigious Patrol of the Year award.

A big congratulations to Patrol 6 lead by Luke Erven who took this out. Darren Morgan and his famous Patrol 1, just missing out on making it 3 years in a row. Also, like to congratulate the 12 members that achieved 100% patrol attendance.

Patrol 6 Winners: Luke Erven, Stephen Boscosuro, Steve Waddell, Oscar Myers, Angus Waddell, Scarlett Curley, Jade Bissett, Vanessa Jamieson

We were able to have members complete the following Awards: Surf Rescue Certificate, Bronze Medallion, Advanced Resuscitation Techniques Certificate, IRB Crew Certificate, Silver Medallion IRB Driver, Silver Medallion Beach Management.

Thank you for everyone’s support for the 2017/18 season.

Jason Northey | President

Towradgi SLSC

Stepping back up to the plate as Club President has been challenging and demanding. Surf Life Saving should be simple and enjoying for all concerned, but the 2017/18 season has been a mix.

Foremost, our patrolling members provided a safe beach at which the community can swim safely. We had minimal rescues performed due to the vigilance and preventive measures undertake by our patrols. Members can be proud of their achievements. Club Captain Matthew Lumby did great job formulating patrols at the start of the season, especially after the loss of some experienced volunteers deciding to have a break from patrols for various reasons. Patrols had to be restructured a few times to meet standards set by SLSA and SLSNSW. We appreciated the support of some members in doing extra patrols to meet those standards.

For the season our club recorded 6 rescues, 5 first aid treatments (1 requiring an Ambulance) and performed 145 recorded preventative actions. Well done.

Membership statistics: Total membership 370, includes 60 patrolling and 22 SRC’s coming through. There was a drop in 18+ Active members and fortunately an increase in our 13-18 youth base. It was pleasing to see younger members encourage and convince parents to get involved and improve their skill base in life saving and do patrols together. Retaining patrolling members is difficult especially with clubs competing for limited willing volunteers.

Awards gained were slightly higher this season. Committee members worked hard to encourage JAB members along with others to attain awards and up skill existing members to get IRB, Basic Beach Management, ARTC and First Aid awards to meet our patrol requirements.

Towradgi had the pleasure of hosting visits from the Clontarf Foundation again and other country community groups. Towradgi also hosted a huge Nipper contingent from Wet n Wild and great to see the kids take on the testing and challenging surf conditions. Club facilities and some of our members assisted SLSNSW Education Academy personnel with running Black Spot education programs.

The “Towradgi Turtles” JAB section of the club, headed by Heidi Christie and her team, saw new and old members and their families enjoy a great season and the Turtles were again impressive and successful in competition at Branch and State Titles. Some juniors and their parents have increased their involvement in the club and now do patrols.

Towradgi SLSC cont.:

Congratulations to Award of Excellence nominees, Matthew Lumby - Patrol Captain of the Year, Grace Green - Young Volunteer of the Year, Sam Zustovich - Young Athlete of the Year. Sam, who patrols at Towradgi, transferred his competitive rights to Mollymook in January 2017 won five gold medals at State & Aussies. Outstanding achievement.

Financial and equipment grants have been great for the club, with 2 new IRB motors through the Federal Government’s Beach Management Equipment Fund. Secondly, Adriana Gervaise’s skill and persistency with grant applications was impressive again. Two grants being successful, $20,000 from the Community Building Partnership Grants for kitchen modifications to set up for the Kiosk made possible through State Government local representative Paul Scully MP and funding towards a disabled access ramp and deck extension to the club $121,000 from Parliamentary Secretary for Illawarra Gareth Ward MP as part of State Govt $4M Surf Club Facility Improvement Program.

Almost there

Following a dispute with SLSI early in 2017, the Supreme Court proceedings were discontinued and settled by agreement in December with SLSI & SLSNSW.

I personally would like to thank everyone for their contribution and efforts during the season especially members of the Committee: Mick, Matt, Adriana, Nick, Stewart, Heidi and Graham for his support as Grievance Officer and legal support. After a 3-year term as Secretary, Mick Banach’s decided time for an administrative break.

Thank you all.

Paul Lumby – President

Fairy Meadow SLSC

Firstly, I would like to thank each and every member for their efforts over the 2017/18 season which has not been an easy one.

Thank you to all our patrolling members for your dedication and hard work, it was an arduous season, hopefully the next one will be less difficult. A big thank you to Matt Theris and David Beecher for covering 2 patrols each and putting in some huge hours. Also thank you to our Club Captains, Matt Theris & Michael Russo, for ensuring we fulfilled all our patrolling obligations.

Our Junior Club had another great season thanks to Craig Warburton and his group of volunteers, to whom I would like to pay tribute to for all their efforts. Thank you to Tracy Devlin, our Registrar and all those who volunteered their time to provide water safety for the Juniors. I would like to thank Craig for his efforts over the last 2 years, as he steps down as Junior Activities Coordinator.

The UOW SLSC has a rather quite year, but their efforts in attracting new members and integrating them into our Club are to be commended.

Unfortunately, due to the WCC roof works, our income was down but we have made some capital improvements. We have a new oven in the kitchen, a new bulkhead above the bar, a resurface dance floor, resealed slate and new artwork in the foyer – which is the highlight. Thank you to Scott Allan for managing the function room throughout this difficult period.

We will begin the 2018/19 season with a new ATV and 2 new IRB motors.

Thank you to the Executive for all the effort they put in to running our club, it is much appreciated. Unfortunately, during the season, Lucy Vance had to step down as Secretary and Matt Theris as Club Captain – thank you both for all your effort. Thank you to Rob Belavic (Secretary) and Michael Russo (Club Captain) who stepped up to fill those positions. Also, thank you to Amy Vella at SurfHouse who is always there to point me in the right direction when needed.

I have attended quite a few meetings at Branch throughout the season and as a club, we are tracking about even with other smaller clubs. SLSNSW is looking at increasing the visibility of SLS and implementing changes which will hopefully make patrolling our beach a little easier. They are also working on realigning the movement with a more current outlook reflecting members and community needs. I would like to thank the Illawarra Branch and State for their ongoing support.

Congratulations to all the award winners for this season:

Captains Cup – Ella Warburton

Life Saver of the Year – David Beecher

Clubman of the Year – Craig Warburton

Competitor of the Year – Jeff Banks

Junior Lifesaver of the Year – Blair Belavic

Patrol of the Year

Fairy Meadow SLSC cont.:

Well done to all our members who competed at Branch, State, Australian and World events, it is great to see Fairy Meadow’s presence increasing.

Unfortunately, this season we lost another former member – Garry Nixon, our condolences go out to his family & friends.

A new Constitution was passed at the AGM and I would personally like to thank those involved for all the effort it required to get this document finalised. I hope this Constitution will guide us well into the future.

As always, I would like to thank all our sponsors for their ongoing support, if it wasn’t for you, the club would struggle to meet our commitments and we really appreciate the assistance you give.

Tony Chapman | President

North Wollongong SLSC

The 2017/18 season has proved to be another successful year for the club on and off the beach. The dedicated volunteer service consistently provided by our active patrolling members reflects well within our community and is a valuable contribution which the club should be proud of. I would like to make the following points regarding the past season:

Well done to all our volunteer patrolling members who have maintained a safe swimming environment for the public on Wollongong’s busiest and most popular beach. As a club, we provided 3,828 volunteer hours to the community. At $30 an hour this equates to $114,840 …... not bad for a bunch of amateurs! Compared to last season we were not involved in as many high-profile rescues involving media attention which is a good thing …… prevention is still the best strategy. While the 6 Patrols were functioning well, the number of active members has plateaued. The new committee will need to make the retention and attraction of active patrolling members one of their top priorities in the coming season. The committee would encourage any past active members to consider patrolling again in the coming season. Ideally the formation of 8 active and consistent patrols would significantly decrease the work load for all.

Fabulous news on the building front. Council has decided to retain the current site and refurbish the building in 2020. This will involve the total reconstruction of the bottom level to provide modern Surf Life Saving facilities for the Club and the roof will be replaced. This will include an extended deck along the eastern front of the club. When the Council releases the DA for the project the building committee can apply for Federal, State and Surf Life Saving grants as a top priority over the next two years. Thank you to all our members who replied to the councils’ draft budget proposal which swayed the Council to make a positive decision for the clubs’ future. On behalf of the club, I would like to thank our State and Federal members for their support and the Lord Mayor and his council who listened to our proposals and decided in our favour.

Financially the club continues to be in a sound position. The function centre continues to provide a major source of revenue for the club. With the building project occurring in 2020 the committee is actively attempting to promote the centre to increase our income from the function centre.

The Ocean 6 carnival held in mid-December was a great success for the club. The national exposure on FOX TV and enthusiasm generated around the club was well worth the effort made by a large number of our members. The success of the event has resulted in organisers requesting that it be held at our beach again next season. The event will be held on the 14/16th December 2018. We are becoming the home of the most professional carnival circuit in Australia…. well done to all!!

The club will be hosting two major events in conjunction with Destination Wollongong next season. The events are the Corona Music festival in the first week of December and the Tribal Challenge in mid- February.

A priority of the committee has been to encourage our members to use the club and enjoy it with friends rather than just attending for patrols, nippers or organised events. In this regard we have provided opportunities for this to occur. We have organised Last Friday Drinks, barefoot bowls, Xmas ham handicap events, Xmas board paddle challenge and a Tennis night. A successful initiative was the club board paddling which occurred twice a week under the guidance of “super coach” Adam. This was well attended in all conditions with most paddlers very chirpy at the beginning of the session but resulting in many looking for the oxy-viva towards the end. Fitness, fun and improved skills were a positive outcome of this activity. The “senior senior” group were very impressive in all conditions. The committee have organised a race day at Kembla Grange and a Comedy for a Cause night to kick off the new season.

North Wollongong SLSC cont.:

Thank you to all club members who helped out with the Beach Netball, Beach Rugby, Aquathon and Splash and Dash events. These events increase the profile of our club and reflect the generous time commitment of our members. Well done to all helpers.

Congratulations to all of our annual award winners who were recognised for their efforts at a very enjoyable Presentation Night in May. We are fortunate to have many talented and committed members. The club would like to especially acknowledge: Glenn Drew as Club person of the Year, Mark Kissling received the Club Captain’s award, Dan Ciguenza the President’s award, Kassie Chan the Patrol Person of the Year, Gabe Eady and Regan Norris the Cadets of the Year and Belinda Jacobs and Chloe Bourke were Rookies of the Year.

The Junior club has had another very successful year under the leadership of Dave Mewett and a hardworking committee of dedicated parents. The theme for the season was Commitment and Participation - mission accomplished!! A pleasing feature was the high level of Nipper participation in the Sydney Water, Branch and State carnivals where many “PBs” were achieved. Well done to Regan Norris for making the Illawarra Branch team for the second year in a row. Congratulations and good luck to Belinda Jacobs who has been elected chairperson of the Junior club. Her commitment and dedication are well worthy of everyone’s support in the coming season.

It was very pleasing to see a team of 25 seniors compete at Branch carnival this season. Thanks to Paul Sparks for encouraging all members to compete for fun and fitness.

The committee restructured the Office opening hours in an attempt to best service members in a world where information and transactions are largely done online. The office was only open on Wednesday during the week and on Sunday mornings in the form of the new ‘Shop’ which has been developed to sell club and general beach merchandise on a trial basis this season. Enquiries for the function centre were made by mobile phone contact which allowed for more flexible viewing times of the facilities. Both strategies were successful. Nipper families were the biggest winners by having access to register, buy clothing and make general enquiries when they have some “spare” time on the weekends. Thank you to Anne McKay for making the shop such a convenient success for all our members.

Once again, the ‘Old Boys Brigade’ (Peter Oyston, Brian Burns, Tony Colledge, Sparrow Palmer, Leo Tobin, Mike Kelly) have done a very valuable job in maintaining and cleaning the club each week. These men are the most consistent, long serving members we have and we would be lost without them. It will be great to share their dream of having a beer or two on the deck with them after 2020.

On a sad note the committee acknowledges the passing of two of our valued patrolling members Duanne Arnold and Tara Harpley. Both these members were quite achievers who contributed significantly to the Junior and Senior club. They will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

I would like to thank the Executive, Senior and Junior committees, for their conscientious efforts this season. After a successful AGM, it is pleasing to see new faces on this year’s committee to ensure that new ideas for our club’s future are heard and implemented. I would particularly encourage our younger and female members to step up and have their say in the running of the club as these balances out the input and ideas presented and ultimately leads to a club that considers and caters for the needs of all members.

Wollongong City SLSC

As we await the imminent delivery of our new Thundercat IRB for the 2018/19 season the “Red & Yellow” flags have gone up and patrols have commenced. This vital piece of equipment allows our members to patrol more efficiently the length of City Beach regularly during patrols from the water. The WIN stadium end of City Beach is increasing being frequented by the community and in particular towards the golf course end of the beach. We thank the cooperation of our major sponsors Fraternity Club, City Diggers and Steelers Club for their ongoing support to allow the purchase of this craft.

Communication with Wollongong City Council is ongoing with regards to dune management/restoration works. It is an ongoing area of contention and frustration for not only Wollongong City members but City Beach Functions who co-lease the site and share our visions to beatify and attract the community to this premier location. Our ongoing concerns on dune height and line of sight concerns still need urgent attention.

It was pleasing to see competition numbers increase across all age groups for the 2017/8 season and the Maroon and White cap also gracing the podium at State championships. Our BJA membership continues to be strong with the “next generation” of members flowing through to our senior club.

Our Community Education program continues to grow and with some 300 students being put through last season we look forward to our established association with UOW Home stay. The program address’s basic beach safety and awareness concerns that International students may encounter as they visit our area. Delivery by utilizing a bilingual program through a Powerpoint presentation to deliver the message of beach safety and also practical demonstrations of current rescue techniques and resuscitation methods.

Port Kembla SLSC

As another season concludes I would like to thank all our members who contributed to our club for the 2017/18 season. To all our active patrolling members, another great job under trying circumstances. You do an outstanding service with the numbers we have.

Without these members we would not be able to perform any other activities as a club, so to all our members, your help has been greatly appreciated. Well done! To our competing members who put in not only patrol hours but also many hours of training, thank you.

Many voluntary hours are required off the beach to run our club. We are very fortunate to have a skilled and dedicated group of people that make up our Committee and executive. I would like to take this opportunity to thank and congratulate them on a job well done. We have had a couple of younger members join our committee and their commitment and new ideas have been greatly appreciated. We need more of this. They have made my job so much easier.

We are again/still being burdened with the expectations of Saturday patrols. Our position still remains the same in that we are against this. Our club has been successful in receiving a number of Grants in the past 12 months. This has been used to update some of our out of date equipment and also put in place plans for club renovations

The financial burden in running our club successfully is becoming increasingly harder. We are fortunate to have some great people and organisation’s which assist us. These include: Port Kembla Port Corporation & Kel Campbell Caltex. I thank them for their ongoing support.

Windang SLSC

Windang Surf Lifesaving Club had another successful patrolling season and our efforts ensured no lives lost during volunteer patrol hours.

It has been a challenging year with major roles on the committee remaining vacant due to lack of interest from club members. It has been a struggle at times to keep on top of all Surf Club requirements to ensure our Club continues to run. It was also with regret that we had to cancel our presentation due to lack of numbers.

Many thanks for the time and effort that our Trainers, Assessors and Facilitators have put in this season in running and assessing courses across the season. Thank you to the candidates who have taken part in the courses on offer.

We had competitors in both Junior and senior competitions this season with the number of Junior members increasing at carnivals. Overall, the WINDANG BOATIES had a strong year and hopeful of a better one next season with the highlight being reserve girls ended the year representing the Branch picking up a bronze state medal, finishing the boat series in 2nd place with strong showings in state and ASRL.

Congratulations to Natalia Zulian on receiving a High Commendation for SLSI Youth Lifesaver of the Year at the recent Awards of Excellence. It is great to have Natalia’s enthusiasm and input with our existing Youth programs.

A good season overall with limited damage to all the equipment. In house servicing has kept the expenses down. We purchased a new Milpro IRB and Fuel Cells with grants.

To all our members I hope we see some fresh faces and enthusiasm on our committee next season. I look forward to next season and maintaining a strong presence on the beach.

SURF LIFE SAVING ILLAWARRA INCORPORATED (INCORPORATED UNDER THE ASSOCIATIONS INCORPORATIONS REFORM ACT, 2012)

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2018

NOTE 1: SUMMARY OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES The financial statements are special purpose financial statements prepared in order to satisfy the financial reporting requirements of the Associations Incorporations Reform Act New South Wales, 2012. The committee has determined that the association is not a reporting entity.

The financial statements have been prepared on an accruals basis and are based on historic costs and do not take into account changing money values or, except where stated specifically, current valuations of non-current assets.

The following significant accounting policies, which are consistent with the previous period unless stated otherwise, have been adopted in the preparation of these financial statements.

Revenue recognition

Revenue is recognised when it is probable that the economic benefit will flow to the incorporated association and the revenue can be reliably measured. Revenue is measured at the fair value of the consideration received or receivable.

Donations Donations are recognised at the time the pledge is made.

Grants Grants are recognised at their fair value where there is a reasonable assurance that the grant will be received and all attached conditions will be complied with.

Interest Interest revenue is recognised as interest accrues using the effective interest method. This is a method of calculating the amortised cost of a financial asset and allocating the interest income over the relevant period using the effective interest rate, which is the rate that exactly discounts estimated future cash receipts through the expected life of the financial asset to the net carrying amount of the financial asset.

Other Income Other revenue is recognised when it is received.

Income Tax As the incorporated association is a charitable institution in terms of subsection 50-5 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997, as amended, it is exempt from paying income tax.

SURF LIFE SAVING ILLAWARRA INCORPORATED (INCORPORATED UNDER THE ASSOCIATIONS INCORPORATIONS REFORM ACT, 2012)

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2018 (continued)

NOTE 1: SUMMARY OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES (Continued)

Cash and Cash Equivalents Cash and cash equivalents include cash on hand, deposits held at call with financial institutions, other short-term, highly liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less that are readily convertible to known amounts of cash and which are subject to an insignificant risk of changes in value.

Property, plant and equipment Plant and equipment are stated at historical cost less accumulated depreciation and impairment. Historical cost includes expenditure that is directly attributable to the acquisition of the terms. Depreciation of Plant and Equipment has been increased to 20% diminishing value to reflect the reasonable life of the asset.

Items purchased as part of a Grant have been depreciated at 100% in the year or acquisition.

Employee benefits Wages and salaries and annual leave.

Liabilities for wages and salaries, including non-monetary benefits, and annual leave excepted to be settled within 12 months of the reporting date are recognised in current liabilities in respect of employees’ services up to the reporting date and are measured at the amounts expected to be paid when the liabilities are settled.

Goods and Services Tax (‘GST’) and other similar taxers Revenues, expenses and assets are recognised net of the amount of associated GST, unless the GST incurred is not recoverable from the tax authority. In this case it is recognised as part of the cost of the acquisition of the asset or as part of the expense.
