1969 South Pacific Games 1969 South Pacific Games The third edition of South Pacific Games was held from 13–23 August 1969 at Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea. Twelve Pacific nations competed at the Games. There were fifteen sports contested at the 1969 South Pacific Games.     Thank God Such Men Lived BY KEN WRIGHT ‘For I am writing not history, and the truth is that the most brilliant exploits often tell us nothing of the virtues of the men who performed them, while on the other hand, a chance remark or a joke may reveal far more of a mans character than the mere feat of winning battles in which thousands fall or of the marshalling of great armies or laying siege to cities’ - Greek philosopher Plutarch, about 110 AD The Coastwatchers Memorial Lighthouse was erected by public subscription and by money from the Commonwealth of Australia in 1959 at Kalibobo Point in Madang, Papua New Guinea. Shaped like a rocket or a bomb, the 80-feet high reinforced concrete column has an attractive base surround and a cruciform pathway approach. This memorial lighthouse was also designed to be a practical navigational aid with provision for the installation of a powerful one million candlepower beam that would be visible up to ten miles out to sea. Part of the inscription on the dedication plate reads: ‘In honour and grateful memory of the Coastwatchers and of the loyal natives who assisted them in their heroic service behind enemy lines during the Second World War in providing intelligence vital to the conduct of Allied operations. Not only did the Coastwatchers transmit by means of teleradio from their jungle hideouts information which led to the sinking of numerous enemy warships but they were able to give timely warning of impending enemy air attacks. The contribution towards the Allied victory in the Pacific by a small body of men who constituted the Coastwatchers was out of all proportion to their numbers’.

    FIJI SPORTS HALL OF FAME The FIJI SPORTS HALL OF FAME was inaugurated in 990 by the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee, as an everlasting tribute to sportsmen and sportswomen of Fiji. The Hall of Fame acknowledges and honours Fiji’s super athletes who for over 65 years have competed in Fiji and abroad against the best in the world. Many have excelled and brought glory and fame to themselves, their sport and to Fiji as a nation and deserve to be recognized and remembered by the people of Fiji. FASANOC is able to provide the avenue for recognition of these great sportspeople through the Fiji Sports Hall of Fame that is currently based at Fiji Olympic House, Suva.     JOHN KOKINAI’s RECORD BREAKING CAREER IN DISTANCE RUNNING John Kokinai’s brief Athletics’ career was packed full of highlights and special performances that far surpass any of today’s distance runners in PNG. He was born on17 May 1951 in the village of Pauluaku, Buin District on the Island of Bougainville. Died 26 September 1992 (Aged 41 years). John had proved that he had plenty of stamina and long distance running ability back home on Bougainville and had much success in cross country races. John’s first time to represent his country was in the 1971 South Pacific Games in Tahiti. His chief rival was Fiji’s Usaia Sotutu, who was virtually unchallenged for many years. (Sotutu still holds the Fiji NR for the 3000m, 10000m and 3000m Steeplechase. He is the Pacific Islands’ best-ever for the Steeplechase). Behind the Fiji master, John claimed two medals - bronze in the 5000m (15:34.8) and silver in the Steeplechase (9:31.2). It was a promising start to his international career. By the time the 1975 South Pacific Games in Guam arrived John Kokinai had inherited the mantle of the Islands’ top distance runner. Usaia Sotutu was past his peak, and John’s main domestic rival, Ala Loi, had retired from the sport. New Caledonia’s Alain Lazare had only just started to make his climb to the top. John reigned supreme. The three distance races on the track all were won by John, by significant margins. He won the 5000m (15:01.02), 10000m (32:01.25) and the 3000m Steeplechase (9:29.4).
