The biblical counselling focus provides training in pastoral counselling that is Christ- centred and biblical. It is well-suited to current and prospective pastors, elders, chaplains, other ministry workers, and counsellors. It will also be helpful for those who often find themselves providing informal counsel to others. Each individualised program will combine biblical, theological and practical subject areas with a major study focus in pastoral/biblical counselling.

Graduates of degrees with a biblical counselling focus will work in diverse settings. Those who intend to work as a counsellor will likely work as part of a church ministry team, in a chaplaincy position, or in a counselling centre. Prospective students who are aiming to be professional counsellors who function independently of churches should choose a degree that allows for the most counselling units and should also consider what else may be advisable to meet regulatory and legal requirements. PTC units in pastoral care and counselling will be eligible to contribute to the academic requirements of the Biblical Counselling Australia counsellor accreditation process.

A counselling stream can be incorporated into PTC’s undergraduate and graduate awards through choosing electives from the Pastoral and Church-Focused Ministry (PC) field. Course structures for all PTC offerings can be found in this handbook.

For a full list of counselling units, please see p. 32

22 INTER-CULTURAL STUDIES PROGRAMME

23 CHAPLAINCY TRAINING

Chaplaincy is a growing field of ministry in which pastoral care is provided in settings outside the parish church, including in hospitals, schools, prisons, and to the emergency services, sporting teams and other institutions and groups. The PTC offers training pathways within several degrees to prepare students for chaplaincy work. We advise all students to consult with the Health & Community Chaplaincy Committee, and keep up-to-date with the requirements of the regulatory body for their chosen chaplaincy area.

Students wishing to become chaplains should ensure they undertake the following units within their degree: o 2 Biblical units o 2 Theology units o 1 Evangelism unit (EM324/524) o 1 Pastoral Care unit (preferably two: PC402/602 and PC403/603)

Contact: Health & Community Chaplaincy Committee Mrs Kathy James, [email protected]

Healthcare

Healthcare chaplains work in hospital and hospice environments, providing spiritual support to those facing illness or bereavement. Two units of Clinical Pastoral Education are usually taken through an external provider, the Association for Supervised and Clinical Pastoral Education in Victoria (ASACPEV). Spiritual Health Victoria is the primary association working with the Victorian Government to regulate healthcare chaplaincy. www.asacpev.org.au/ www.spiritualhealthvictoria.org.au/

24 Schools, universities & colleges Chaplains in educational settings provide support and counselling to students at the primary, secondary and tertiary level. The two units of study required are offered at the PTC, however ACCESS Ministries may have further training requirements which change from time to time. www.accessministries.org.au/

Disaster relief Disaster relief chaplains have the opportunity to comfort and counsel those suffering in emergency situations. The search for meaning in times of crisis is often more acute, and chaplains provide answers and support. Disaster relief chaplaincy is coordinated through the Victorian Council of Churches Emergency Ministry. www.vccem.org.au/

Sports Victorian Sports Chaplaincy coordinates chaplains to work with clubs to provide pastoral care and spiritual guidance to both athletes, coaches and other staff. www.sportschaplaincy.com.au/
