He hails from Dharwad, a place which has given to the world many great musicians like Pt Bhimsen Joshi, Gangubai Hangal and Pt Kumar Gandharva. He is fortunate to have his father Pandit VENKATESH GODKHINDI, an eminent vocalist and Bansuri arCste of the country, as his first and only Guru for Flute. Pravin started toying with a small flute at the tender age of 3 and since then it has been his best companion. Political messages in most Hindi films are concealed within entertainment. Films use thrilling & entertaining plots mixed with political content in order to convey their messages to the public. Films not only reflect reality but also construct the political ideology. The public is generally unaware of the extent to which they are being influenced, managed and conditioned by the political discourses in Hindi films. This study attempts to conduct the discourse analysis on the Hindi film “Chakravyuh” to find how politics and entertainment are merged together to influence public opinion. The film is based on the dark, largely-unexposed world of the Naxalites fighting for their land and dignity. Discourse analysis of the film will help in exploring how an entertaining film can carry a meaningful message. For over 40 years in India, since the emergence of the Naxalite rebellion, cinema has drawn inspiration from the rupture caused by this iconic movement in Indian political history. Hindi films seem to have woken up to Naxalism, or Maoism, as it is more commonly known today. -

THE ART OF THE DRUM: THE RELIGIOUS AND SPIRITUAL DYNAMIC OF DRUMMING AND DRUM CRAFTING IN FIJI, JAPAN, INDIA, MOROCCO AND CUBA JESSE BROWNER-HAMLIN THE BRISTOL FELLOWSHIP HAMILTON COLLEGE WWW.THEARTOFTHEDRUM.BLOGSPOT.COM AUGUST 2007 – AUGUST 2008 2 In the original parameters of my Bristol Fellowship, I aspired to investigate the religious and spiritual dynamic of drumming and drum crafting in Fiji, Japan, India, Morocco, the Dominican Republic, and Trinidad and Tobago. As any academic will attest, field research tends to march to beat of its own drum, if you will. The beauty of my fellowship was that I could have conducted the research in just about any country in the world. Music is everywhere; and moreover, drums are the oldest instrument known to man. Along the way, I modestly altered the itinerary: in the end, I conducted research in Fiji, Japan, India, Western Europe, Morocco and Cuba. It truly was a remarkable experience to have full autonomy over my research: I am infinitely grateful that the Bristol Family and Hamilton College (represented by Ginny Dosch) gave me the freedom to modify my itinerary as I saw fit. To be successful while conducting field research, you need to be flexible. While several of my hypotheses from my proposal were examined and tested, I often found myself in unscripted situations. The daily unpredictability of the fellowship is what makes it such a profound and exciting experience, as every day is an adventure. With the blessing of technology, this fellowship was carried out in “real time.” Because I actively maintained a website, www.theartofthedrum.blogspot.com, my research and multimedia were posted almost instantaneously, and thus, my family and friends back in the States could read about my experiences, see my pictures and watch my videos. -

ABSTRACT Title of Thesis: SANGAM, A CONFLUENCE Aditya Yogesh Desai, Masters of Fine Arts, 2012 Thesis Directed by: Professor Howard Norman Department of English Sangam, Sanskrit for “confluence,” is a novel set across three storylines, all connected by a single ghazal poem, the evolution of which spans the lives and times of three men. In medieval India, Sufi poet Amir Khusrow arrives at the ruins of an ancient Hindu Temple, seeking inspiration and revival for his work; centuries later, at the turn of India’s independence from Britain, young lawyer Jayant finds his idealism tested in against the nation’s messy beginnings; in the present day, a young Indian-American disc jockey navigates the night club scene, hoping to become the modern music star. The novel is meant to mimic how music is sampled, re-appropriated, and remixed over time. In the same way songs are matched by a DJ for beats and melody, so too are the themes and emotional arcs of each man’s story line meant to echo one another, and resonate as a whole.
