With more than 350 students, we begin the year with our largest enrollment in more than 20 years! This enrollment growth is an increasing reflection of the many great opportunities students and families enjoy here at Roncalli Catholic. It is also a testament to our great faculty and staff, and of our alumni and friends who support us so generously. Mr. Paul Hans, joined the Roncalli Catholic family on July 12, as our new principal and his energy and professionalism are palpable. Paul is settling in well and understands our potential as well as the increasingly high expectations with which we are holding ourselves. He has more Jeff Dempsey, President than 20 years of educational experience, with a strong curriculum and professional development Roncalli Catholic High School background. Learn more about our new principal on page 6. Along these lines, and in our continued effort to provide our students with the very best academic support, we have created a new position – resource teacher. Mrs. Barb Renkenberger joins us following a 40-year teaching career and will coordinate our new Resource Center, equipped with computers, books, study space and other education materials. Students in need of extra help can get one-on-one assistance and develop study skills in the Resource Center. See page 16 for more on our new Resource Center and Barb. Along with Paul and Barb, we also welcomed three new faculty members this fall. Please see pages 16 and 17 to read more about Susan Altman; Tom Kassing; and, J. J. Stoffel, ’02. This issue of Pride Magazine also features many of our fundraising efforts over the past several months. Volunteers – students, parents, alumni and friends – are vital to the success of these events. We are so grateful for all of the generosity and support we receive from our Roncalli Catholic family. Read more about these events, including the 24th Annual Festa del Leone on page 14, our A. Len Leavitt Memorial Golf Outing on page 12 and our 3rd annual Fireworks fundraiser on page 21. 50th Anniversary of Rummel/Roncalli Catholic In future issues of the Pride magazine and elsewhere, you will begin to hear of our plans to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Rummel/Roncalli Catholic. Archbishop Rummel High School opened in the fall of 1964 – in the fall of 2014 we will begin a year-long celebration of Catholic education from here on our campus. A “50th Anniversary Committee” will be formed to help with planning – for more information on becoming involved, please feel free to contact me. I look forward to our continued work together as we build an even better Roncalli Catholic. Elden Francis Curtiss, Archbishop Emeritus of Omaha Archdiocese dedicated and blessed the Roncalli Catholic chapel in the name of Father Aloysius “Al” McMahon. Father McMahon died two years ago at the age of 89, leaving behind a legacy of a life of service, from his time as a missionary in South Africa as well as his assignments at Boys Town and various parishes throughout Nebraska to his year as the chaplain at Rummel High School.*. * All-boys Rummel High School merged with all-girls Notre Dame Academy in 1974 to become the co-educational Roncalli Catholic High School.     SCOTUS CENTRAL CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORT www.scotuscc.org 2019-20 Columbus, NE 68601 DEDICATED LEADERSHIP Message from the President 2019 - 2020 The 2019-2020 school year was a year of great success along Board of Education with some difficult challenges. On March 16th, we were forced St Anthony to close our building to our students and teachers. This closure led Tim Beaver Chris Hutchinson to Scotus Central Catholic moving to E-Learning for the entire Lisa Kaslon fourth quarter. Thankfully, our school has been engaged in blended Fr. Ross Burkhalter learning in many of our curriculum areas over the last few years. St. Bonaventure We have also provided professional development for our teachers Shannon Kosch Jason Mielak to utilize Microsoft Teams as a tool to stay connected electronically Kathy Steiner with their students. This allowed for a much smoother transition Fr. Michael Swanton into the E-Learning. The faculty did an outstanding job in keeping St. Isidore high expectations for our students and going the extra mile to protect the integrity of Jay Pelan our instruction. Clint Przymus Dr. Dale Zaruba Another challenge for our school was the creation of a Catholic identity committee Fr. Joe Miksch in the absence of a campus minister. We no longer have a priest assigned to our school Corporate Board as a campus minister. This committee allowed for greater engagement by our faculty Archbishop George Joseph Lucas in providing opportunities for our students to grow in their faith.     Affirming the Dignity of the Mentally Ill …Our actions must show that mental illness does not create insurmountable distances, nor prevent relations of true Christian charity with those who are its victims. Pope John Paul II “Mentally Ill Are Also Made in God’s Image,” 11/30/03 One of the fundamental truths of Christian belief is that each human being is created in the image and likeness of God. (Genesis 1:26-27). The Catholic Church unconditionally embraces and faithfully proclaims this truth. It is the foundation for human dignity.[i] Our commitment to this truth is measured through actions on behalf of the vulnerable and alienated in society, especially the poor and suffering. Accordingly, as the Diocesan Bishops, shepherds of the Catholic faithful throughout Nebraska, we join together in issuing this pastoral reflection on upholding and respecting the inherent dignity of the mentally ill and those with substance abuse disorders or other addiction problems living in our midst. We are not experts on behavioral health.[ii] It is a complex, multidimensional subject, encompassing scientific, spiritual and pastoral dimensions. Here, we seek to share our reflections and perspectives as teachers and pastors, in order to encourage those who are struggling with these burdens in any way and to educate the diverse Catholic community on the importance of looking upon our afflicted brothers and sisters with compassion and care. As pastors, we realize the impact that mental illness, substance abuse disorders and other addiction problems have on individuals, families, communities and the social order. This impact, whether expressed in terms of treating these conditions or in terms of promoting positive behavioral health practices, gives rise to numerous considerations: mental, emotional, physical, social, moral and spiritual.

    SCOTUS CENTRAL CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORT www.scotuscc.org 2016-17 Columbus, NE 68601 Message from the President The charisms or “gifts from God” that we chose to celebrate during the 2016-17 school year were Gratitude, Service and Faith—and I give thanks to God for the many opportunities we shared this year to be good stewards of His gifts and to grow in our faith. Reflecting back on the year, the first thing that comes to mind is the positive attitude, enthusiasm and effort our students and faculty shared every day—what more could a school president ask for in his first year!? Academically, we had seven seniors named to the 2017 Omaha World Herald Academic All-State team including Tate VunCannon who was on the West-Central, first team. Over the course of the year, 35 students received NSAA Academic All-State recognition, and our National Honor Society numbers grew to 70. The 2017 Class ACT composite score was 24.3 which was 3.4 points above the national average. I am also very proud of the continued success with the Student Council’s “Shepherd” program—which provided upper class student mentors for incoming 7th graders. And new this year was the formation of a very successful faculty student assistance team that provided focused assistance to students who were struggling academically. In team competition our students brought home six district championships, a state title in girls cross country, second place finish in girls’ soccer, and third place finishes in boys cross country and track. At state competition our cheerleading squad captured first place in Game Day, and our Journalism students won the state Class B title for the first time in school history! We also had exemplary individual district and state performances in many other sports, speech, music and mock trial.
