Orchard News June 2011WEB Orchard orchardTHE CHERRY news www.cherryorchardfc.ie No. 107, June 2011 12 Premier Win SFAI Norton Cup Congratulations to the players and managers of the 12 Premier team, who having lost to Templeogue Utd in last season’s national cup final, achieved success this time round when beating St Kevins 1-0 in the SFAI Norton Cup final at Jackson Park Kilternan on 14th May. Andy O’Reilly, who scored the winner in the semi-final against Malahide Utd, did it again in the final when he netted in stoppage time. There was national cup final disappointment for the 11 Premier and 14 Premier sides, however, both losing 2-0 to St Kevins and St Joseph’s respectively. Well done also to the 15 Premier team, who won the Conway Cup in a penalty shoot- out after a 1-1 draw with home Farm and the 7A and 9A1 sides, who won their leagues. And congratulations also to the Senior Sunday team, who reached the final of the FAI Intermediate Cup and won the league title, ensuring a return to the top division in the intermediate grade. Sean Whelan raises the Norton Cup l l l l l1 News & Views Jonathan Daly Bags A Hat-Trick Well done to Jonathan Daly, who scored three times in Dundee Utd’s 4-0 home win over Motherwell in the SPL om 7th May. Jonathan struck after 35, 43 and 49 minutes and the result guaranteed Utd fourth spot in the table. Play-Offs Disappointment for Three Old Boys Commiserations to Donal McDermott (Bournemouth), Stephen Gleeson (MK Dons) and Alan Lee (Huddersfield Town), who all experienced disappointment in the League One play-offs at the end of the season. Donal scored a fine goal in Bournemouth’s 1-1 home draw against Huddersfield, but the Yorkshire club won a penalty shoot-out after the second leg finished 3-3. Stephen Gleeson’s Alan Lee MK Dons lost 4-3 on aggregate to Peterborough Utd in the other semi-final, while Alan Lee came Stephen on as a late substitute for Gleeson Huddersfield as they were beaten 3-0 by Peterborough in the play- Donal McDermott off final at Old Trafford. l2 l l l l Secretary’s Report ORCHARD AMONGST THE MEDALS IN THREE NATIONAL FINALS With the 2010/11 season over, I would Gorman (Crewe Alexandra) from our 16 take this opportunity to thank the Premier side. And not for the first time. His late, late goal saw the SFAI U12 Norton Cup travel joyously home to Ballyfermot. It was Andy who also got the winner against Malahide United in the semi-final which went to extra-time. And on this occasion, with the tie looking set for extra-time, he came off the bench to pop in the golden goal deep in injury time from inside the six yard box at the Carrickmines end. It was the perfect example of being in the right place at the right time, a real striker’s instinct. “It was some substitution” quipped George Johnston, who runs the side with Don O’Reilly, Paul Clegg and physio Jamie Ahearn in possession l6 l l l l Daniel O’Brien. “I thought we deserved it. We were the better side. It’s a tremendous victory, especially after losing here last year in the Menton Seery final,” added George, who was drenched with water by the celebrating Cherries. Trevor Clarke hooks the ball forward It was the first defeat of the season for Kevin’s. And it came at the end of a long week. Last Saturday they beat the Farm after extra-time to lift the DDSL Tony Ryan Cup. And on Tuesday night, thay twice came from behind to overcome last year’s U11 national champs, Templeogue United, in an epic semi-final on Shanowen Road. But the double is still very much on as they can now focus on the league. Orchard News Oct 2010WEB:Orchard 12/10/2010 11:12 Page 1 orchardTHE CHERRY news www.cherryorchardfc.ie No. 100, October 2010 KEITH FAHEY SCORES WINNER AGAINST ARMENIA Congratulations to Keith Fahey (Birmingham City), who, after coming on as a substitute, scored after 75 minutes to give the Republic of Ireland a 1-0 win over Armenia in their opening Euro 2012 qualifying group match in Yerevan on 3rd September. This was Keith’s fourth international appearance, having been introduced as a substitute in Ireland’s home friendlies against Paraguay and Algeria in May and Argentina in August. Surprisingly perhaps, Keith was an unused substitute when Ireland beat Andorra 3-1 in their second qualifier at the Aviva Stadium, four days after the Armenia game. Keith joined Arsenal from Cherry Orchard in July 1998 and later moved to Aston Villa while still a teenager. He never really settled at either club and returned home, eventually joining St Patrick’s Athletic. He was transferred from St Pats to Birmingham City in January 2009 and helped his new Evening Herald club to gain promotion to the Premier League at the end of that season. Keith is relishing his second chance in the professional game in England and we hope he continues to make his mark for Birmingham and Ireland.
