The city’s thriving public theatres—like Blackfriars, the Cockpit and the Globe—enjoyed audiences of up to 3,000 people, who flocked to see performances of tragedies, comedies and histories. A succession of monarchs had been supporters of the arts— from Queen Elizabeth I (who died in 1603) to James I (who died in 1625).
