The Dock The Dock (circled in red above) is the bar at the bottom of the screens where Apps can be easily accessed. It holds a maximum of 6 Apps. The initial Apps on the Dock are , Mail, and Music. Right above the Dock are a row of small dots. These indicate the number of screens on your iPad. Swipe right or left to access other screens. If you have not downloaded additional Apps you may only have one screen of Apps.

Home Button Home (circled in red above) has many functions shown below:

 Press once to wake up the iPad  Press once to return to the Home screen from any App  Tap twice to access multitasking (the App switching screen)  Tap and hold to access Siri

To power your iPad on or off press and hold the Sleep/Wake Button (circled in red above) then slide your finger. This is similar to rebooting your computer. Whenever you are having problems, try this.

By default the Side Switch (circled in red above) mutes the iPad. In Settings the same Side Switch can be changed to lock the screen orientation (portrait vs. landscape). To do this tap the Settings App; tap General then Lock Rotation. Use the Side Switch to prevent the iPad from changing orientations.

1. Switches are like on/off buttons. Tap to turn on or off.

3. Menus provide a list of options. Tap this button (Share icon) to see menu options that are context sensitive. The screen shot below shows the options available when viewing a photo:

4. Tab Bars are at the bottom of a screen. They are similar to Toolbars but each button represents a different App mode. The screen shot below shows the Tab Bar for the iTunes App:

What’s an App An “App” (short for Application) is a computer program that performs a specific task. Think of it as a mini software program. The iPad comes with several built-in apps (already preloaded) such as , Camera, , Clock, etc. You can also download apps from the Apps store. There are MANY to choose from, some free and others for purchase, usually at a minimal price.

 Most Apps have a similar format which lessens the learning curve.  Most Apps do not interact with each other; therefore there is less possibility of viruses.  There is no file structure on the iPad, which means content is saved within the App. For example, you type in are saved there.  Even though an App may be free to download there may be additional content within the App available for purchase.

It is not necessary to close an App. It will hibernate in the background. However, closing Apps will help conserve your battery. To close; double-tap the Home button to get to multi-tasking mode, find the App you want to close; swipe up from the bottom of the App to the top of the screen. See Touch Gestures on page 6.

When you re-open an App you will usually return to the last used screen.

To switch between open Apps, double-tap the Home button. If necessary, swipe right or left to find the desired App, then tap it.

When you purchase an App from the Apps Store make sure it is an App for the iPad – not iPhone.

Organizing Apps You can rearrange your Apps so that the ones used most frequently are on the first screen. You can also change which Apps appear on the Dock. By default there are four Apps on the Dock. You can have up to six. To re-arrange Apps:

 Tap the Home button to go to the Home screen  Tap and hold one of the App icons  All the App icons will begin to jiggle  While the Apps are jiggling tap and hold the App you want to move  Drag it to the new location  Tap the Home button to stop the jiggling

Apps are always arranged in rows. You cannot have empty .

To organize Apps into folders drag one App on top of a related App.

To delete an App; tap the x in the top right corner when the Apps are jiggling.

Virtual Keyboard The iPad has a “virtual” keyboard which appears whenever needed. The keys will vary depending upon the application. For example, when using Mail the keyboard will have the @ symbol readily available. The screen shot below shows the Reminders App keyboard:

You can split the keyboard on purpose or by accident by using the “spread” gesture on the keyboard. Use the “pinch” gesture to put the keyboard back together.

Dictate text rather than typing. Tap the microphone; say your words then tap Done.

Siri Siri is a voice-activated assistant. You can ask Siri questions about anything or ask Siri to play music, set the alarm, get directions, etc.

Siri requires an Internet connection.

If Siri was not turned on during the initial iPad setup, open the Settings App; tap General then tap Siri to turn it on.

Siri was not available until the third generation iPad 2. See the table on page 3. iOS iOS 81 is the latest Apple software that runs iPads, and . To check your version: tap Settings, tap General, tap About then check the Version. You can also check to see if you have the latest version by tapping Software Update instead of About.

If you have a computer (PC or Mac) you can download iTunes software to your computer then use iTunes to back up your iPad with the syncing feature. You can also use iTunes computer software to copy music CD’s to your iPad.
