C A N O E I N G AT THE 1964 SUMMER OLYMPICS

The 1964 Summer Olympics officially known as the Games of the XVIII Olympiad were held October 10 to October 24, 1964 in Tokyo, Japan. Tokyo had been awarded with the organization of the 1940 Summer Olympics, but this honor was subsequently passed to Helsinki because of Japan's invasion of China, before ultimately being canceled because of World War II. The 1964 Summer Games were the first Olympics held in Asia, and the first time South Africa was barred from taking part due to its apartheid system in sports. South Africa was, however, allowed to compete at the 1964 Summer Paralympics, also held in Tokyo, where it made its Paralympic Games début. These Games were also the first to be telecast internationally. The Games were telecast to the United States using Syncom 3, the first geostationary communication satellite, and from there to Europe using Relay 1. Tokyo won the rights to the Games on May 26, 1959, at the 55th IOC Session in Munich, West Germany, over bids from Detroit, Brussels and Vienna. There were: 93 NOC’s; 5 151 athletes (678 women and 4473 men); 163 events in 19 sports.

MEDAL On the obverse, the traditional goddess of victory, holding a palm in her left hand and a winner’s crown in her right. A design used since the 1928 Games in Amsterdam, created by Florentine artist Giuseppe Cassioli (ITA, 18651942) and chosen after a competition organised by the International Olympic Committee in 1921. For these Games, the picture of victory is accompanied by the specific inscription: "XVIII OLYMPIAD TOKYO 1964". On the reverse, an Olympic champion carried in triumph by the crowd, with the Olympic stadium in the background. N.B: From 1928 to 1968, the medals for the Summer Games were identical. The Organising Committee for the Games in Munich in 1972 broke new ground by having a different reverse which was designed by a Bauhaus representative, Gerhard Marcks.

CANOEING Canoeing at the 1964 Summer Olympics was held between 20 October and 22 October on Lake Sagami, 60 km (37 miles) from Sagamiko, Kanagawa, Japan. There were 7 events, 5 of which were for men and 2 for women. Both of the women's events were 500 m kayaking events; there were three kayaking and two canoeing events for men, all of which covered 1,000 metres. The K4 event for men was introduced to the Olympic program at these Games, replacing the K1 4 × 500 m event that was raced in the 1960 Games. The Romanian canoeists garnered the most medals at 5, but did not win a single gold medal. In that category the Soviet competitors were the most successful, taking three champion titles. The German team and the Swedish team each won a pair of golds as well.
