The Medical Examiner and other medical doctors said he was not moving minutes after the knee was placed on his neck. The evidence by eyewitnesses and testimony by police officers, including the chief, declared that Chauvin was not following police policy and should be convicted. The Blue Wall of silence was cracked. The top police officials' argument is that Chauvin is an exception to "good policing." African Americans and many others, on the other hand, see Chauvin as the norm of modern policing especially as it applies to Black and Brown people. $27 Million Civil Settlement A few days before the trial began the Minneapolis City Council agreed, March 12, to a historic civil settlement paying the Floyd family $27 million the largest pre-trial settlement ever. Chauvin's lawyers unsuccessfully tried to use the settlement as a reason to move the criminal trial out of Minneapolis.

    A pastoral word on the verdict of Derek Chauvin’s trial The trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minnesota police officer charged with the killing of George Floyd, has riveted our national attention these past weeks, and now a verdict has been reached. Together with people around the world, we have anticipated the jury’s decision with troubled hearts. As members of the community of Jesus, we affirm that “if one member suffers, all suffer together with it” (1 Corinthians 12:26, NRSV). No jury verdict can erase the pain of the Floyd family, and we share our condolences and pray for ongoing comfort in their suffering and for all whose lives have been touched by this tragedy. As people of the cross, we believe in the hope of the resurrection. Yet we cannot rush to Easter Sunday without reflecting on the oppression of Good Friday. The murder of George Floyd is one of the many examples of the ongoing abuse of police authority. The extrajudicial killings of Brown and Black bodies must stop. We recommit ourselves as a church to continue to fight against the sin of racism and to hold accountable unjust systems and structures that perpetuate injustices, including our own. In the words of Martin Luther King Jr: “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” The work of confronting these injustices is long overdue. Let us together in our congregations and communities discern how we are being called in this moment to live out our baptismal promise to serve all people and strive for justice and peace.

On June 8, 2020, a mere twelve days after those punishing “nine minutes and twenty-nine seconds” took George Floyd’s life, the 116th. Congress introduced the “George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2020.” Seventeen days later, on June 25, the House approved the measure by a comfortable 236-181 margin. Only three Republicans, though, voted in its favor. And the Senate, then a province of the “Reds,” simply refused to take it up. Hoping for a better outcome, the Dem’s reintroduced the legislation in the 117th. Congress. On March 3rd., reflecting their eroded standing, the “George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2021” passed the lower chamber on a far less decisive 220-212 vote. It now awaits action by the evenly-divided Senate. Here are some of its key provisions (for the text version click here; for a summary click here.) · As Federal law (18 USC 242) presently stands, police officers can only be prosecuted for “willful” civil rights violations, meaning done on purpose and with bad intent. The George Floyd Act would relax this standard to include behavior that was “knowing” – meaning, not by accident – or “reckless.” Should death result, present penalty enhancements would be extended to include situations where officer conduct was a “substantial” contributing factor to the fatality, not only its sole or primary cause.

The murder of George Floyd brought renewed awareness to how racism negatively impacts mental health and the need to address racism as an important public health issue. As part of our strategic planning process, NAMI NH is working to advance diversity, equity and inclusion throughout our organization. We are doing this work to further our mission of improving the lives of all people impacted by mental illness and suicide, including communities of color who are historically underserved. George Floyd’s murder also underscored the need to continue to address excessive use of deadly force by law enforcement. In the Chauvin trial, fellow law enforcement officers and leaders turned out in force to testify against Chauvin, a recognition that the use of deadly force must be reduced. In New Hampshire, fifty percent of fatalities from officer-involved shootings have been people with known mental illness. Twenty witnesses have testified for the prosecution in the first week and a half of the trial, including the following: • The 911 dispatcher who responded to the call of George Floyd using a counterfeit bill in a business • A bystander who filmed Floyd’s death • An off-duty emergency medical technician and firefighter who witnessed Floyd’s condition and wanted to treat him • A professional MMA fighter who witnessed Floyd’s death and called the police on Chauvin • Four underage witnesses to Floyd’s death • The employee who received the alleged counterfeit bill from Floyd • A bystander who conversed with Floyd while Floyd was in the police car • A Lieutenant of the Minneapolis Police Department (MDP) • Floyd’s ex-girlfriend • Two Hennepin County paramedics who responded to Floyd’s death • A police sergeant who secured the scene after the arrest • A retired sergeant and the police supervisor who arrived on scene after Floyd was taken away • A Minneapolis Police Department homicide investigator • The doctor who pronounced Floyd dead • The Chief of the Minneapolis Police Department • An inspector who was the commander of the MPD’s training division at the time of Floyd’s death • An expert on MPDs use-of-force policy and training • An officer and medical support coordinator who is the MPD’s expert on medical issues • A sergeant from the LAPD who is an expert witness on use-of-force tactics The defense has not begun presenting witnesses.

    PUBLIC POLL FINDINGS AND METHODOLOGY America approves of the Chauvin guilty verdict New Ipsos snap poll for USA Today finds most accept the verdict Topline Findings Washington, DC, April 21, 2021 – In the immediate aftermath of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin being found guilty of the murder of George Floyd, the large majority of Americans agree with the verdict and plan to accept the results. With most Americans saying they have followed the trial at least somewhat, the verdict presents a rare moment when majorities of both Democrats and Republicans believe the outcome is correct. However, this Ipsos snap poll, conducted in the three hours after the verdict was announced, does find that one in five Republicans say they plan to reject the verdict and one in four Democrats plan to accept the verdict and join rallies, marches, or protests. With continued division between Republicans and Democrats on emphasizing law and order versus the right to protest, this is likely to continue being a flash point in American society. These are the findings of an Ipsos poll conducted between 5pm and 8pm on April 20, 2021, on behalf of USA Today. For this survey, a sample of 1,000 adults age 18-65 from the continental U.S., Alaska, and Hawaii was interviewed online in English. The poll has a credibility interval of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points for all respondents.
