Mad Butcher Club at MT SMART STADIUM, HOME of the MIGHTY VODAFONE WARRIORS Sir Peter Leitch’s Mad Butcher Club AT MT SMART STADIUM, HOME OF THE MIGHTY VODAFONE WARRIORS 29th August 2015 Newsletter #87 Mt Smart Stadium By Barrry Ross LTHOUGH I have been involved with league in some way for around 60 years, last Saturday was my Afirst visit to Mt Smart. The result wasn't what we wanted, but I still came away hugely impressed. Like many who braved the wrath of our host in the Mad Butcher's Club up in the Stacey Jones Lounge, I was amazed by Sir Peter's energy. Everyone in the league world knows what an asset he is to our game in general, and to the Warriors and NZRL in particular. But when you are close enough to see the time and effort he puts in, you are left gobsmacked. I've been fortunate enough to be a friend of Sir Peter's for 10 years or so now, and many times I've seen the personable and caring man behind the gruff exterior. His charity work is legendary and that speaks volumes for his attitude to people in need. Despite being noticeably ill with the flu, he came to the airport on Friday to pick up Thomas George and myself. Then he insisted we have lunch with him and some friends in Auckland. And what a lunch. Close to three hours of laughter, friendship, along with excellent food and drink, gave both Thomas and I some great memories. Thomas, is the Deputy Speaker of the NSW Parliament and he had never met Sir Pete. But after only a few minutes it was as if they had been friends for years. He was in Auckland to see his son, Cameron George, who is the CEO of Auckland Racing and a committed Warriors supporter. So Thomas, Cameron and I, plus an old friend of mine, rugby writer Bob Howitt, arrived at Mt Smart around 5.15pm. Soon after, along with 60 or so others from the lounge, we were taken on a stadium tour, by Doubtful Dexter, who in his previous life was a standover man for the Kremlin. Like everyone else I was amazed at Sir Peter's memorabilia in the eastern stand. Howitt was quick to say: "There is nothing as good as that anywhere in New Zealand." And like most at the match I was thrilled when the Warriors led 16-0 after 14 minutes. Luck did not play a part, just great football from the home team. Then came the long injury break for the injured James Tamou. While it could not be avoided, it certainly did the Warriors no favours. In Australia, the Warriors great attacking play leaves us in awe. While it may not seem likely after the last few weeks, their time will come. With Issac Luke, Shaun Johnson and Roger Tuivasa-Sheck as their spine for next year, they will score plenty of tries, and I for one, can't wait. Keep supporting the Warriors and be part of the crowd next season. For Sale: One Used League Club, Average Condition By David Kemeys Former Sunday Star-Times Editor, Former Editor-in-Chief Suburban Newspapers, Long Suffering Warriors Fan O AUCKLAND businessman Paul Davys is in talks with our owner Eric Watson about buying the club, Salthough Watson says he’s in no hurry. He’s had a stake for 17 years, so full marks for persistence, and what’s another year. Watson might be in no hurry, Davys is, saying he’ll give Watson until Friday because he needs to know one way or the other, or he'll walk away. “If he hasn't by the end of the week then it's probably better for the club and me to move on.” Davys has a chunk of the childcare company ChoiceKids, which is as far – or almost identical, depending on your viewpoint – from league as it is possible to get. Doesn’t seem to worry Davys, who says he wants to be hands on, and he is one of the many convinced the culture is wrong, and that attitudes have to improve. “There's a culture problem, fan scan see it, the coaching staff can see it, and the players can see it. But it's hard to change if you don't know how. I've got a fair idea and a fair amount of knowledge on how to build a cul- ture, so that's what I can bring.” No shortage of confidence then.

In he goes and comes out with what is clearly the chid of the African fellah. “What are you doing?” says the African fellah. “Well I couldn’t risk going home with a Storm fan,” says the Warriors man. Boom, boom, which is why it shits me no end that Brad Fittler has come out and said the Storm have to be favourites to win the NRL – back to back – after their showing against us. But it is also why I’m not losing too much sleep over what happened on Anzac Day. Bring on the Tigers and let’s get on with it. Fittler says that 50-10 win was a warning shot fired across the bows of all the other clubs. Brisbane went back to back in 1992-93and it has not happened since. Only a fool, damn it, would ever write Melbourne off, so there slow start meant absolutely nothing.

Well, the boys have a big game coming up this Saturday night at 5pm when we take on the Canberra Raiders at home. Ricky’s mob have won their first two games by beating the West Tigers by 30 points to 12 in round one, and just getting the win over the sharks 12/10 last weekend. They will be out to redeem themselves in front of their home fans on Saturday and our beloved Warriors will be very disappointed with their own result over the weekend, even though we had the majority of possession we just couldn’t get over the white line. I think we completed about 40 sets, so we are at consistent and better in control than we have been. Life goes on at Smart Stadium the office is open the shop is open and has someSTOP great bargains available.THE PRESS!! If you find yourself at the stadium you might see Stacey Jones and Tony Iro who are running the pathway and development programs at the Vodafone Warriors. There are currently around 60 boys involved and they train at Mount Smart Stadium every Monday and Thursday evenings. The young men are aged between 15 and 18 and will be hoping to be involved in the junior representative program against the best Australian age group teams in 2022.In addition to the local coaches, trainers, and physios being involved, the squad is also getting coaching help from former Warrior Adam Blair who is teaching the players the finer art of the defence and wrestling techniques . HOLD ALL PRINTERS So there’s still activity at the club, I’ve been out a few times and I can tell you the guys are doing a good job with these young fellas especially when you consider the experience Tony Iro, Stacey Jones, and Adam Blair have all had in rugby league - they are all in very good care.

WBugger. So what did the Aussies have to say in their papers? Much to my surprise, they were not impressed. Pity, it made the memory of Paul Gallen mouthing off even more unpalatable. We were home when Shaun Johnson potted the field goal. But then Issac Luke’s try was disallowed a minute later – and I have no issue with that – horrible as it is, he was ahead of the kicker and then encroached the 10 metres. So the Sharks get a penalty and march into the attacking zone. You could not script it. Setting up for a field goal of their own it is charged down and we spill the ball forward, giving the Sharks a chance. Edric Lee goes over in the corner but we all wait for the forward pass to be called. The Bunker can’t rule on forward passes, so the try stands, despite a chorus of booing . That is all she wrote, and we just have to lump it. Coach Stephen Kearney and the players resorted to the old line about win some, lose some. That diplomacy has more to do with not criticising referees, and falling foul of the NRL.
