Taxi Fares:

It is generally simple to hail a taxi in Montreal, and hotels and train stations usually have orderly queues. Taxi vacancy is indicated by a lit-up taxi light on top of the vehicle. Taxis normally hold 4 passengers and all use meters.

Fares start at $3.45, then the meter rises by $1.7 every kilometre. The fare can also increase by about $0.63 every minute stuck in traffic.

It is standard practice to tip a taxi driver anything between 10% - 20%.

Safety Instructions

Montreal is considered to be a very safe place where people are friendly and helpful. That said, with 3.8 million people in the area, crime does exist so make sure you keep your wits about you for pickpockets. In case of an emergency, an emergency phone call can be made free of charge from any phone including public pay phones at the following number: 911.

Language

Canada’s national languages are English and French. Quebec is the only Canadian province that has a predominantly French-speaking population, and the only one to have French as its sole provincial official language.

Electrical power points

The voltage used throughout Canada is uniformly 110 volts, A.C. and 60 Hertz.

Canadian power outlets accept plugs with 2 flat pins. The configuration is the same as that used by American 2-flat plugs and plugs are compatible. Please note that there are no columnar-shaped plugs or 3-pin plugs used in Canada. It is advisable to purchase a plug adapter beforehand for plugs that feature other configurations.

Weather

Canada has four distinct seasons. Summer (June – August) brings warmer temperatures, with average highs of 24O C, but low humidity levels. Warmer weather means you can enjoy more of Montreal's great outdoor offerings, such as sitting on one of many patios or just soaking up the city's rich, historic atmosphere. Evenings can still be a bit chilly; a light jacket or shawl is recommended.

Montreal International Jazz Festival | 26 June 26– 5 July 2015

Set in the heart of the Quartier des Spectacles in downtown Montreal, The Montreal International Jazz Festival has transformed the city into a gathering place for lovers of all music related to jazz for over 30 years: 1000 concerts at 15 indoor and some 10 outdoor venues.

As Jazz has evolved over time, the genre spawned several offshoots, including swing, jazz fusion, electro-jazz, Latin jazz and free jazz. You can hear all of this music at the festival and find new up and coming talents.

With some streets closed to vehicle traffic and parking in the downtown core relatively limited, people are encouraged to make their way to the Festival site on foot, by taxi or by public transit.

Place d’Armes

Begin your day in this outdoor plaza, the heart of Vieux-Montréal, at the site of the city’s oldest building, the Vieux Séminaire de St-Sulpice, erected by priests who arrived in 1657. Next to it is the Basilique Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Québec, an 1824 church with a stunning interior of intricately gilded rare woods. Its acoustics are so perfect that the late, famed opera star Luciano Pavarotti performed here several times. Consider taking the walking tour of Vieux-Montréal, which takes you past every historic structure in this historic neighbourhood and eventually to our next stop. Or, to go to Pointe-à-Callière directly, walk down the slope from the basilica on either side street.

Cirque du Soleil

The stilt walkers, fire breathers, and musicians from Montreal had one pure intention: to entertain. The troupe formally founded as Cirque du Soleil (Circus of the Sun) in 1984 has matured into a spectacle like no other. Using human-size gyroscopes, trampoline beds, trapezes suspended from massive chandeliers, and the like, Cirque creates worlds that are spooky, sensual, otherworldly, and beautifully ambiguous.

Housed in the former Olympic bicycle-racing stadium, the Montreal Biodome is home to four distinct ecosystems: a polar environment; a tropical rainforest, a Laurentian forest and the St. Lawrence marine setting. When the Biodôme opened in 1992, its ecosystem concept was a world first.
