Effort has been made to do this in such manner that the stranger can easily ascertain where to go, whom to see, and can directly accomplish the object of his visit, whether it be for the transaction of business or for the pur- pose of educational observation. The effect desired necessitated the greatest possible brevity and likewise adherence to the object to avoid confusion on the part of those who may not be acquainted with various branches of the state government. The State of Oklahoma issues an official directory, which carries with it much information concerning the state at large--very valuable to the student of state affairs. Much of this information is omitted from this Directory, for the very obvious reason that it is too voluminous for an edition intended for hasty examination and immediate use. Much care has been taken that the departmental information be accurate and that whomsoever may see fit to scan its pages can easily ascertain the subject matter sought and be guided without incon- venience to the seeker of information or to others. In order to facilitate this, a Telephone Directory is carried in the latter part of the Capitol Directory. Seekers of information rela- tive to institutions not quartered in the Capitol can call the Boards given over the Institutional List for information. Lists of state officials since statehood are given, that the seeker of information may learn the connection from statehood day until the present time. CAPITOL PUBLICITY BUREAU. The estimated value of the building and grounds is in excess of $4,500,000. At the time the Capitol was erected, a wave of economy prevailed in the State and Federal Judge Robert L. Williams was inducted into the office of Governor after the work of construction had been commenced by a Capitol Com- mission appointed by Governor Lee Cruce. The commission con- sisted of ex-Senator Pat Goulding, Enid; Stephen Douglass, Ard- more, and William B. Anthony, Marlow. This commission was re- tained until the building was constructed, omission of the dome being forced by Governor Williams, working under the theory that the money appropriated could be used more advantageously in con- struction of the building proper. Legislatures have appropriated various sums for ground improve- ments and the plan of the expert provides for very extensive sums for the beautification of the grounds. When these plans are com- pleted, Oklahoma will have one among the most beautiful Capitol sites in the Republic, and already the work has progressed suffi- ciently to make the State Capitol one of the objects of beauty within the State, and experts agree that the structure itself could not be reproduced for twice the sum expended in original construction. At the time it was occupied, 1917, the site was in the extreme north- eastern section of Oklahoma City, wholly surrounded by farm lands. Now building activities have expanded until the State Capitol is surrounded on three sides by beautiful residences, and that expan- sion indicates that the Capitol will soon be considered in the heart of a very beautiful residence section of the State's capital city.
