The company’s Vision and Mission of enriching life and work through internet and understanding the evolution of customers’ needs to ensure the best internet experience possible, became concrete along with the objective of enabling all individuals and companies to take advantage of the ongoing digital transition. The commitment to the expansion of a new generation of the web and to digital transformation saw a total investment of 581 million euro in 2016, the equivalent of 32% of its revenue. In 2016 Fastweb extended the coverage of its own infrastructure in ultra-broadband fibre network to 1.2 million families and businesses, reaching a total of 7.5 million families and businesses. Urs Schaeppi Fastweb intends to continue in its ultra-broadband expansion plan in the future as well, with the objective of reaching 13 million families and businesses with ultra-broadband by 2020 (approximately 50% of the population). This ambitious result will be achieved thanks also to Flash Fiber, the joint venture between Fastweb and Telecom Italia established in August 2016 with the objective of bringing fibre to homes in 29 cities. Connecting people for Fastweb means not only working on strengthening web infrastructure, but it also means focusing on finding innovative solutions to meet the needs of customers by speeding up the implementation of new technologies and convergence services. The “Everywhere, Everything, Everyone” formula sums up the commitment to overcoming technological barriers and allowing web access anywhere, with any kind of technology to suit all needs. Telecommunications In a picture of progressive deterioration of the macroeconomic situation, the trend of contraction of the telecommunications market, on both fixed and mobile network, already observed for some years, was confirmed in 2011. In this context, the elements which best qualify the Italian telecommunications market, show no substantial change in 2011 compared to the last two years. These elements can be summed up as follows: i) the expenditure of families and companies in telecommunications services continues to fall, with a slight acceleration compared to 2010; ii) the reduction in the prices of telecommunications services to both private and business customers, on both fixed and mobile networks, is constant; iii) the contraction in voice calls on dial-up network continues, with a reduction of 11.7% in the number of minutes consumed, while voice traffic from the mobile network has increased by another 10% in the last year; iv) the spread of broadband services on fixed and mobile network has produced further growth in income deriving from data services; v) there is still growth, but with indications of the saturation of the relative market, in the virtual mobile telephony compartment; vi) with regard to the competitive situation, the erosion of Telecom Italia's total market share continues; vii) in last autumn, an auction was held for the assigning of the usage rights of the frequencies in the 800, 1,800, 2,000 and 2,600 MHz bands, which led to a total commitment of the mobile operators for € 3.9 billion; viii) on the other hand, the reduction in investments in infrastructures is confirmed;9 ix) The gross profit of the sector is substantially stable, also thanks to the continuous restructuring and cost containment actions carried out by the telecommunications companies.

In the last 18 months, video publishing has become a huge part of many websites and professionally-produced video content is being offered to growing online audiences. Meanwhile, telecommunications companies (telecoms for short), such as BT, have also recognised that offering TV and on-demand video services over broadband networks will help them to attract new customers (and keep existing ones). To do this they use a network technology called internet protocol TV (IPTV). In this supplement we look at how online video and IPTV are developing in parallel and, increasingly, in competition with one another and at the impact this is having on traditional media businesses. We investigate how the UK’s largest telecom, BT, is approaching it. Companies are testing the interactive capabilities of IPTV services and also looking at how to use them to target advertising. Video-on-demand services are being ramped up by pay TV operators as they look to stand out against rivals, such as BT. We look at the BBC’s ambitions to make the iPlayer work on a wider variety of devices and how its commercial sister service, Kangaroo, is starting to develop.
