Although dung beetles are important members of ecological communities and indicators of ecosystem quality, species diversity, and how it varies over space and habitat types, remains poorly understood in the Brazilian Cerrado. We compared dung beetle communities among plant formations in the Serra Azul State Park (SASP) in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. Sampling (by baited pitfall and flight-interception traps) was carried out in 2012 in the Park in four habitat types: two different savanna formations (typical and open) and two forest formations (seasonally deciduous and gallery). -

Memoria de la Fundación La Salle de Ciencias Naturales 2004 (“2002”), 158: 43-60 Phanaeini (Coleoptera: Scarabaeinae) de la cordillera de Los Andes, depresión de Maracaibo y llanos de Venezuela Jorge Gámez Resumen. Se presenta una lista de la entomofauna de coleópteros copronecrófagos de la tribu Phanaeini presentes en las regiones de montañas (cordillera de Los Andes) y llanuras bajas (depresión de Maracaibo y llanos), y se analiza por tipos de vegetación, en base a capturas y revisiones de colecciones entomológicas institucionales y privadas. Han sido recolectadas y registradas 15 especies de los géneros Phanaeus, Coprophanaeus, Sulcophanaeus, Diabroctis y Oxysternon, representando el 56% de las especies de la tribu señaladas para Venezuela. Es en la selva subandina donde se concentra el mayor número de especies (73,33% del total reconocido), presentando elementos que se encuentran también en bosques amazónicos. En las regiones y subregiones fisiográficas consideradas en este trabajo, los Phanaeini no sobrepasan la cota de los 1800 m s.n.m. y se ubican en hábitats cuyas de temperaturas y precipitaciones exceden los 17 °C y 800 mm respectivamente. La combinación de factores bióticos y abióticos determinan la presencia de las diferentes especies en los distintos tipos de vegetación, y las actividades antrópicas inciden en la distribución actual de muchas de ellas. Abstract Meiotic and mitotic chromosomes of Dichotomius nisus, D. semisquamosus and D. sericeus were analyzed after conventional staining, C-banding and silver nitrate staining. In addition, Dichotomius nisus and D. semisquamosus chromosomes were also analyzed after fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) with an rDNA probe. The species an- alyzed had an asymmetrical karyotype with 2n = 18 and meta-submetacentric chromosomes. The sex determination mechanism was of the Xyp type in D. nisus and D. semisquamosus and of the Xyr type in D. sericeus. C-banding re- vealed the presence of pericentromeric blocks of constitutive heterochromatin (CH) in all the chromosomes of the three species. After silver staining, the nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) were located in autosomes of D. semisquamosus and D. sericeus and in the sexual bivalent of D. nisus. FISH with an rDNA probe confirmed NORs lo- cation in D. semisquamosus and in D. nisus. Our results suggest that chromosome inversions and fusions occurred during the evolution of the group. -

Contrary to previous suggestions, the Scarabaeinae fauna of southern Rondônia province is not related to Amazonian fauna. Rather, it shows stronger connections with Chaco. Hence we suggest the inclusion of the southern part of the province of Rondônia, representing the Pantanal depression itself, as a new biogeographical district within Chaco province. -

Entomol. 42(6): 1218Ð1225 (2013); DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.1603/EN13100 ABSTRACT The capybara, Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris (L.) (Rodentia: Caviidae), is the largest herbivorous rodent on Earth and abundant in the Neotropical region, which can provide a stable food source of dung for dung beetle communities (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae). However, the use of capybara dung by dung beetles is poorly known. Here, we present data on the structure of the dung beetle community attracted to capybara dung and compare with the community attracted to human feces. Dung beetles were captured with pitfall traps baited with fresh capybara dung and human feces in pastures with exotic grass (Brachiaria spp.), patches of Brazilian savanna (Cerrado), and points of degraded riparian vegetation along the Aquidauana river in Anasta´cio and Aquidauana, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. In traps baited with human feces, 13,809 individuals of 31 species were captured, and in those baited with capybara dung 1,027 individuals belonging to 26 species were captured. The average number of individuals and species captured by the traps baited with human feces was greater than for capybara dung in all habitats studied. Composition of the communities attracted to human feces and capybara dung formed distinct groups in all habitats. Despite the smaller number of species and individuals captured in capybara dung when compared with human feces, capybara dung was attractive to dung beetles. -

Abstract Meiotic and mitotic chromosomes of Isocopris inhiata and Diabroctis mimas were studied by standard staining procedures, C-banding, silver nitrate staining and FISH using Apis mellifera 28S rDNA as probe. Isocopris inhiata presented a 2n = 18 (8II+ Xyp) karyotype, composed of meta-submetacentric chromosomes with gradual reduction in size. The karyotype of D. mimas was 2n = 20 (9II+ Xyp), composed of meta-submetacentric (pairs 1, 2, 3, 4 and 7) and acrocentric (pairs 5, 6, 8 and 9) chromosomes, with gradual reduction in size. Analysis of constitutive heterochromatin revealed similar C-banding patterns for both species, showing pericentromeric and telomeric bands and diphasic chromosomes. In addition, the X chromosomes of these species were found to be almost completely heterochromatic. The presence of chromocenters was checked in one or more phases of prophase I of these species. All heterochromatin reacted positively for the silver stain. By FISH analysis we were able to locate the rDNA in medium-size autosome pairs in both species and in the X chromosome of D. -

Caroli Hamel-Leigue, E-mail: [email protected] Resumen: Los escarabajos coprófagos (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) son un taxón focal ideal para la investigación sobre la biodiversidad y conservación, pero frecuentemente no son tomados en cuenta para la planificación de la conservación. Dentro de los Scarabaeinae, la tribu Phanaeini es la más conocida taxonómica y biogeográficamente en la región neotropical. Es endémica de las Américas, contiene 12 géneros y aproximadamente 160 especies, y debido al tamaño relativamente grande de sus especies probablemente es desproporcionadamente importante para los procesos ecológicos y el funcionamiento de los ecosistemas. -

E-mail: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] Abstract – The objective of this work was to elaborate supporting tools for the correct identification of Scarabaeidae, by an identification key of genera, and a commented list of the species present in Brazilian pastures. A data survey was performed on the specimens deposited in the main Brazilian collection and reported on the recent scientific literature. The distribution of the species was identified in the Brazilian states, based on information on feeding preference, ecological aspects, and potential for faeces removal action. The species were classified according to their importance for pastures, as: high, medium, and low. A key for the identification of the genera and subgenera of Scarabeidae present in the pastures was constructed through the analysis of the external morphology of the species and, when needed, by the analysis of sexual traits. Twenty genera and 76 species of scarab beetles were recorded for Brazilian pasturelands, among which Dichotomius bos, Dichotomius nisus, Trichillum externepunctatum, Ontherus appendiculatus, Onthophagus aff. hirculus, and Digitonthophagus sp. were considered as the most frequent, widely distributed, abundant, and important. The dichotomous key will contribute to the identification of the genera and subgenera of dung beetles (Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) occurring in the Brazilian pastures.
