MIKE MCCARN/Associated PressWhen Carolina Panthers overhauled their offense in the offseason, an offensive decision was overlooked. The team felt that the tandem of Byron Bell and Nate Chandler was talented enough to replace former All-Pro and three-time Pro Bowl left tackle Jordan Gross, who retired after the 2013 campaign. That was the wrong assumption. Carolina's offensive tackles play as bad as any pair of tackles across the league. According to Pro Football Focus (required subscription), the only team suffering from the worst offensive tackles to play this season is the Atlanta Falcons. Bell switched from right to left tackle after last season to fill the void let By Gross, while Chandler took over on the strong side. While a drop-off in the game is to be expected after the loss of a player of Gross' caliber, the team's offensive tackle fell the proverbial cliff. Jordan Gross's 2013 performance against Bell, Chandler Chandler Chandler Bell-21.7-6.2-15.1Nate Chandler-13.4-3.3-12.0Source:Pro Football FocusThe Panthers' tackles were at their worst during Carolina's disappointing 13-9 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. Instead of claiming a season-defining victory over the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Panthers couldn't quite on offense, as the Seahawks claimed in a last-minute victory. Both offensive tackles were abused throughout the contest. After starting the last three seasons at right tackle or guard, the Panthers gave Bell the opportunity to compete for the starting left tackle spot this year. He easily won the job during the preseason, but it could be more of an indictment of his competition than the ringing endorsement of Bell.Left tackles are considered one of the cornerstones of any franchise because of their primary responsibility to protect the blind-side quarterback. The team's left tackle is usually its best athlete along the offensive line and its highest-paid blocker. Left tackles are primarily paid pass protection. Blocking the pass is the area where Bell fights the most. Of all the starting left tackles in the NFL, only two have the worst pass blocking class than Bell, according to Pro Football Focus. Bell is far less nimble than any team would like in a left tackle. Very few teams even have left tackles as heavy as the Panthers quarterback. Bell is listed at 340 pounds. Buffalo Bills' Cordy Glenn is the only starting left tackle in the NFL listed for more heavyweight. Bell's sluggishness is evident in his set of passes. The lack of athleticism tackles is not just a concern today. That has been a problem since he signed with the team as a free agent undrafted in 2011. If the workout numbers for former New Mexico member Lobos were compared to the top offensive linemen in his class, Bell would be the only top-15 performer in one category... vertical jump. Otherwise, Bell just didn't show very good athleticism in any of the movement exercises prior to the draft. This was carried over to his early years as a professional. Even as a right tackle or guard, Bell was below average as a pass defender. He didn't get a positive pass blocking class from Pro Football Focus during any of his previous seasons at Carolina. In fact, Bell was rated as the team's worst pass blocker two of the last three seasons and the second-worst in 2013 (behind Chandler). During Sunday's loss, Bell gave up the sack at the worst of times. With Carolina trailing late in the fourth quarter and facing 2-and-15 from his 18-yard line, Seahawks outside linebacker Bruce Irwin got the better of the Panthers' left tackle. Irwin lined up wide and pressed his ears back because it was an obvious passing situation. This put Bella at a disadvantage Bell was in a good position after his initial kick-steps, and that's when Fell apart. The big left tackle wasn't patient and threw his kick too early. As a result, he was not in balance and could not recover (see: below). Bell surrendered a sack against the Seahawks.Credit: NFL game RewindIrvin lowered his shoulder and easily went around to fire quarterback Cam Newton for a seven-yard loss. Bell has the length and size to survive in left tackle, but just survive is not good enough to protect a franchise talent like Newton. At this point in his career, Bell is an overachieving talent who was overwhelmed while playing one of the game's most demanding positions. Nate ChandlerMike McCarn/Associated PressLike Bell, Chandler is a former undrafted free agent getting his first opportunity to be a permanent starter in a new position. Unlike Bell, Chandler has reason to fight for the right to decide. The third-year blocker was transformed from a defensive line into an attacking line before the 2013 campaign. It was a rocky transition. The concept of playing the offensive line wasn't entirely alien to Chandler, however. He spent his first two seasons with the UCLA Bruins as an offensive lineman. But it takes time to develop an NFL caliber technique. The Seahawks were able to put pressure on Newton from the right side throughout Sunday's contest. Chandler didn't surrender the sack, but Seattle manufactured four quarterback pressure, attacking the right tackle. An example of Chandler's poor technique is shown below while trying to slow down Seahawks defensive end Cliff Avril. Chandler misses the block. Credit: NFL game RewindAvril lined up wide because the tight end was on his side. So the defensive end played what's called the Broad 9 technique. This gave him an easier path to the defender. Chandler needs to make sure he's got as wide and depth with his initial kick-steps as possible to be in the right position to slow down Avril. He didn't. At the moment when the above screen capture is made, Chandler already had his feet too close together while his shoulders were rotated. Since Chandler did not reduce the space between him and the passer, Avril made him at a disadvantage.
