Annual Summer Play Scheme 2015 For over forty years the Town Council has provided a summer play scheme free of charge for the children of our community. The aim of the play scheme is to provide children with the opportunity to participate in and experience a wide range of fun and enjoyable activities and games organised in a safe and secure environment. This year, the play scheme was extended to the full 6 weeks summer break and it was held at Burntwood Community Centre. Almost 500 children from South Kirkby and Moorthorpe used the play scheme at some point during the summer. The Town Council can confirm that it will continue to hold its annual summer play scheme for the benefit of the community.

The Town Council has set up a series of initiatives with Wakefield Theatre that will benefit our local community. In the New Year we will be starting our Community Champion Awards, where people can nominate unsung heroes from the South Kirkby and Moorthorpe area who work to improve and enhance the lives of people who reside in this area. As a reward for their hard work people and their guests will be treated to a pre performance buffet at Wakefield Theatre, whilst having an opportunity to meet the staff and the cast before settling down to a performance of a play. Transport will be provided from South Kirkby, to and from the theatre. If you would like to nominate somebody then you can do so by contacting Joanne or Kerrod on 01977 642159 or by email [email protected] Meanwhile if you have children aged between 5 and 7 then you may be interested in putting them forward for Performance Academy Kidz a series of 1.5 hour sessions for 5-7 year olds. The sessions support the use of imagination and play using drama, dance and song. The sessions will in readiness for involvement in the theatres performance aim to build confidence and develop performance skills academy. The sessions will take place over four weeks and are free to children from the South Kirkby and Moorthorpe Town Council area. However places are limited so if you would like your children to be considered then again please contact Kerrod or Joanne at the Grove either by phone or email. We are also hoping to hold auditions and workshops for young people from our area to select people to take place in the Wakefield Mystery Plays. The theme of the plays will be the decline of the mining industry in our area and its effect on young people today. Hopefully the auditions and workshops will be held in Spring 2016 – but at the time of going to press are subject to the Theatre getting the funding to put the plays on. Finally we have secured a couple of performances of Jon Godbers Shafted for February 2016. The play will star Jon and his partner Jane Thornton and tells the story of Harry and his wife Dot in the thirty years after the miners strike. We are fortunate to secure the performances as the play is going on a national tour. We will be publishing ticket and venue details later....So watch this space.
