J. Ellis Matthew J. Pearsall, University of Arizona and Michael S. Christian University of North Carolina This study examines how teams respond to unplanned member loss. We draw on theory of team compilation and adaptation to suggest that teams with well-developed trans- active memory systems (TMS) will be better equipped to withstand the loss of a member. Then, based on role criticality theories, we argue that those effects depend on which member is absent, such that when a more critical member is lost, the perfor- mance benefits of a TMS are reduced. Finally, we reason that this interactive effect is because of the team’s ability to engage in plan formulation. We tested and found support for our hypotheses using 78 four-member teams engaged in a command-and- control simulation. TMS positively affected team performance following the loss of a member, but the benefits of the TMS were reduced following the loss of a critical member because teams had more difficulty engaging in plan formulation. We discuss how the results of this study add to our understanding of the precursors of successful team adaptation. In making our case, first we specify some key social dimen- sions of cognitive distribution and some basic distinctions between memory cases, and then describe stronger and weaker versions of distributed remembering in the general distributed cognition framework. Next, we examine studies of social influences on memory in cognitive psychology, and identify the valuable concepts and methods to be extended and embedded in our framework; we focus in par- ticular on three related paradigms: transactive memory, collaborative recall, and social contagion. Finally, we sketch our own early stud- ies of individual and group memory developed within our framework of distributed cognition, on social contagion of autobiographical memories, collaborative flashbulb memories, and memories of high school at a high school reunion. We see two reciprocal benefits of this conceptual and empirical framework to social memory phenomena: that ideas about distributed cognition can be honed against and tested with the help of sophisticated methods in the social-cognitive psychology of memory; and conversely, that a range of social mem- ory phenomena that are as yet poorly understood can be approached afresh with theoretically motivated extensions of existing empirical paradigms. -

Abstract In this paper I examine Daniel Wegner’s claim that the conscious will is an illusion. I begin by asking what Wegner might mean by “the conscious will”, and what he might mean by calling it an illusion. I then explore Wegner’s arguments for the claim that the conscious will is an illusion. I conclude that these arguments fail, and that although there is much we do not yet know about the structure of the phenomenology of agency, it is unlikely that the phenomenology of agency is illusory. 1. Introduction Given its ubiquitous presence in everyday experience, it is surprising that the phenomenology of doing—the experience of being an agent—has received such scant attention in the consciousness literature. But things are starting to change, and a small but growing literature on the content and causes of the phenomenology of first-person agency is beginning to emerge.2 One of the most influential and stimulating figures in this literature is Daniel Wegner. In a series of papers and his book The Illusion of Conscious Will (ICW) Wegner has developed an account of what he calls “the experience of conscious will”. In this paper I assess Wegner’s model of the conscious will and the claims that he makes on the basis of it. -

[email protected] http://www.wjh.harvard.edu/~wegner/ Abstract: The experience of conscious will is the feeling that we are doing things. This feeling occurs for many things we do, conveying to us again and again the sense that we consciously cause our actions. But the feeling may not be a true reading of what is happening in our minds, brains, and bodies as our actions are produced. The feeling of conscious will can be fooled. This happens in clinical disorders such as alien hand syndrome, dissociative identity disorder, and schizophrenic auditory hallucinations. And in people without disorders, phenomena such as hypnosis, automatic writing, Ouija board spelling, water dowsing, facilitated communication, speaking in tongues, spirit possession, and trance channeling also illustrate anomalies of will – cases when actions occur without will or will occurs without action. This book brings these cases together with research evidence from laboratories in psychology to explore a theory of apparent mental causation. According to this theory, when a thought appears in consciousness just prior to an action, is consistent with the action, and appears exclusive of salient alternative causes of the action, we experience conscious will and ascribe authorship to ourselves for the action. Experiences of conscious will thus arise from processes whereby the mind interprets itself – not from processes whereby mind creates action. Conscious will, in this view, is an indication that we think we have caused an action, not a revelation of the causal sequence by which the action was produced. -

This page intentionally left blank Memory in Mind and Culture This text introduces students, scholars, and interested educated readers to the issues of human memory broadly considered, encompassing individual mem- ory, collective remembering by societies, and the construction of history. The book is organized around several major questions: How do memories construct our past? How do we build shared collective memories? How does memory shape history? This volume presents a special perspective, emphasizing the role of memory processes in the construction of self-identity, of shared cultural norms and concepts, and of historical awareness. Although the results are fairly new and the techniques suitably modern, the vision itself is of course related to the work of such precursors as Frederic Bartlett and Aleksandr Luria, who in very different ways represent the starting point of a serious psychology of human culture. Pascal Boyer is Henry Luce Professor of Individual and Collective Memory, departments of psychology and anthropology, at Washington University in St. Louis. He studied philosophy and anthropology at the universities of Paris and Cambridge, where he did his graduate work with Professor Jack Goody, on memory constraints on the transmission of oral literature. He has done anthro- pological fieldwork in Cameroon on the transmission of the Fang oral epics and on Fang traditional religion. Since then, he has worked mostly on the experi- mental study of cognitive capacities underlying cultural transmission. After teaching in Cambridge, San Diego, Lyon, and Santa Barbara, Boyer moved to his present position at the departments of anthropology and psychology at Washington University, St. Louis. James V. -

Daniel Wegner, The Illusion of Conscious Will (Cambridge MA: The MIT Press, 2002), pp. xi + 405. Anyone who retains the Cartesian faith that we know what we are doing should read this book. Wegner assembles a huge amount of evidence to show our widespread ignorance of when and how we are acting. Our failures are of two kinds. First there are cases in which we are acting but do not realize that we are. Examples include ouija board manipulation and other varieties of Victorian spiritualism; facilitated communication; water divination; and hypnotism, to which Wegner devotes a long chapter that would serve as an excellent introduction to the topic. Second come cases in which we are not acting, but think that we are. Wegner describes an experiment of his own (the ‘I-Spy’ study) in which subjects are induced to believe that they have selected a figure on a computer screen (when they haven’t) by the expedient of getting them to think about that figure a few seconds before. Perhaps such cases are unusual; more common are cases in which we are indeed acting, but in which we think that our actions are achieving far more than they in fact are. We habitually overestimate the effect that we have on objects and people around us. Indeed there is good evidence from many studies that it is a sign of mental health to overestimate one’s control over the world. If this weren’t bad enough, it also appears that, even if we do accurately understand our actions at the time, we are very likely to likely to forget or confabulate later. -
