Company, Position & Person Profile Managing Director October 2015 1 | PageSynetic Theater The Organization Mission Synetic redefines theatre by blending innovative techniques and movement, investing in artists’ growth, and creating unforgettable visceral experiences for every audience. History Synetic Theater (the Company) emerged from the creative vision of founders Paata and Irina Tsikurishvili, Georgian artists who moved to the United States in the 1990s. Trained in dance, theatre and film, the Tsikurishvilis combine traditions of the Caucuses with distinctly American styles to tell classic stories through movement, music, technology and visual arts. Synetic Theater was founded in 2001 and made its artistic debut with the first wordless Shakespeare production, Hamlet…the rest is silence, thrilling audiences with its athletic and high-voltage physical theatre and earning three 2003 Helen Hayes Awards, for Outstanding Resident Play, Outstanding Choreography and Outstanding Director. Today The Company produces four to five Mainstage productions and two to three Family Series productions per season, runs an educational studio for ages seven through adult, conducts community outreach programs, and tours family and mainstage productions, reaching over 36,000 patrons annually. To date, the Company’s productions have earned 116 Helen Hayes nominations and won 27 Helen Hayes Awards, garnering praise for both its Wordless Shakespeare repertoire (Hamlet…the rest is silence, Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Antony and Cleopatra, Othello, King Lear, The Taming of the Shrew, Twelfth Night) and its dialogue- and movement-based pieces, such as Host and Guest, Frankenstein, Carmen, and The Master and Margarita. The Position The Managing Director (MD) will work closely with the CEO/ Founding Artistic Director (CEO) and will share several responsibilities. Overall, the MD will be responsible for all aspects of finance, marketing, development, planning, general administration, and human resources. Specifically, the MD will work closely with the Board, oversee the fiscal integrity of the Company, create an annual budget, actively cultivate relationships with corporate and community organizations, hire and manage staff, oversee the Company’s public image, supervise the education and outreach programs, oversee program budgets, computer/database systems, and represent Synetic at public functions. Position Title: Managing Director Location: Arlington, Virginia Reports To: Board of Directors Specific Responsibilities Board Activities and Governance Support • Board - The MD is a key Board liaison and a partner to the CEO as regards board communications and support. In this capacity, the MD attends all board meetings (quarterly) and prepares all significant board communications including minutes (drafted by Board Secretary), meeting scheduling, preparation and delivery of quarterly board financial and operational reporting. • Finance Committee - The MD is the primary interface with the Finance Committee of the board and ensures regular reports. The MD is in charge of engaging the audit firm annually and ensuring the smooth auditing process and completion. • Strategic Plan - The MD works in close partnership with the Board to manage the execution and implementation of the company’s comprehensive 3-year strategic plan. • Governance /Legal - The MD provides the proper level of governance to ensure compliance with legal, regulatory and policy requirements. The MD is the lead interface with the company’s legal counsel and insurance brokers to ensure strong and appropriate compliance and risk management. Development Leadership • Donor cultivation - The MD spearheads development efforts as the company grows. The MD creates a strategy for a large sustained base of annual individual donors and secures financial support from individuals, foundations and corporations. The MD supervises all development staff as regards to writing grants, donor communication, and oversees company events. • Tracking – develops and tracks proposal and proposals and reports for all foundation and corporate fundraising. Fundraising Management • The MD assists the CEO in finding, cultivating, and coordinating fundraising activities to strengthen the company’s fundraising capacity. The MD is the lead organizer of the annual Benefit event to raise funds for the Company Operational Leadership • Finance - The MD is responsible for all accounting and finance (CFO)-related matters, including financial reporting and analyses, business controls, development of the annual budget, cash management and any financial tracking/reporting and controls to the Board of Directors. The MD manages the annual external audit and ensures a timely completion. • Operations/Administration - The MD is responsible for establishing, managing, and improving the company’s operations. This includes leading the development of effective processes and related metrics/reporting in each of the company programs. The MD also manages any key organizational growth initiatives with a focus on best-in-class infrastructure and human resources. • Marketing - The MD supervises marketing and advertising-related activities and ensures the brand visibility, strategic initiatives, customer satisfaction, and audience growth. • Human Resources - The MD oversees all HR functions including developing and managing HR processes (recruiting, hiring, compensation, benefits, training and professional development / performance reviews) to ensure Synetic attracts and retains top talent. The MD ensures effective communication, accountability, staff retention, and programmatic success by helping to create a culture that promotes initiative, appropriate risk taking, learning, cooperation, equity, and mutual respect. Joint Responsibilities with CEO • The MD and AD are charged with working in close cooperation to build, nurture, and sustain the Company to achieve the Company’s Mission. • They will work together to achieve optimal annual budget performance and to ensure the financial integrity and stability of the Company. • They will work together to achieve earned and contributed revenue targets as set in the annual budget. • They will oversee all strategies and policy decisions approved by the Board that would impact internal and public perception of the Company. • They will work closely to ensure success of the backstage operations and most efficient use of the company’s budget and allocation of resources and in producing a high-quality show in a safe environment. • They both report directly to the Board of Directors which establishes all strategies and policies. The Person Qualifications & Experience The successful candidate will have the following qualifications: • Bachelor’s Degree and experience with a nonprofit organization in a senior level capacity; advanced degree preferred. • Demonstrate a passion for theatre and the connection between a professional company and its community. • Ten years of progressive experience in a related field. • Exemplary leadership and managerial skills which include consistency, fairness, positive attitude, enthusiasm and encouragement. • In-depth knowledge and demonstrated experience of finance and financial reporting including financial planning, oversight, strategies and generally accepted accounting principles and practices, and risk management. Excellent ability both to analyze and conceptualize, and to work at both a detailed and high level. • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. • Excellent organizational skills with desire and ability to work in a team environment.
