Really enjoyed this, primarily for the way it brought back memories of the Ashes series. Not sure I particularly liked Jones by the end though. Oct 05, Tom rated it really liked it. Takes a no frills approach, built around play-by-play accounts of each session of the Ashes series. So it's not a celebrity memoir, this despite the publishers' obsession with Kevin Pietersen and requires a decent knowledge of cricket language and characters. No dumbed-down explanations of what Lord's is. For me, that's a good thing. He's a fairly modest character off the field at least and I'm not sure the writer's nailed down a distinctive voice for him. But the asides are very good - Takes a no frills approach, built around play-by- play accounts of each session of the Ashes series. But the asides are very good - The Test: My Life Jones discovered his speed and coaches helped him build on it; the rhythms and emotions of taking part in one of the most intense test series ever; the psychological effect of minor and serious injury, and the realities of dealing with a pro sport career cut short, even with serious wealth following into the and the Inside Story of the Greatest Ashes Series. Like all cricket books it has a bad case of appendicitis, ending with pages and pages of scorecards, stats and padding.     NEWSLETTER No. 265 - SEPTEMBER 2006 27 September 2006 – Meeting In time honoured fashion, the Society extends a very warm welcome to the Hampshire Beneficiary at their September meeting. TONY MIDDLETON has been with the County for some 20 years, first as a player and then in various coaching roles. He is now the County’s Academy Director. His well produced Benefit Brochure gives an informed account of his career and his contribution to Hampshire cricket since his retirement as a player. The publication gives a reminder that he is Hampshire-born, in Winchester on 1 February 1964, and that he progressed through the Hampshire schools and colts system, before making his debut in 1984. However, it was not until Chris Smith’s sudden departure in 1991, that he forged a regular first-team place. Such was the strength of Hampshire’s batting at the time – perhaps the best in their history – that in the previous year, he scored a century on four occasions, as well as a 90, only to be left out when one of Hampshire’s stellar cast returned to the side. He did, though, record a thousand runs. However, Tony Middleton cemented his place by dampening the fires of Waqar Younis in the Nat. West Trophy triumph at Lord’s with a well constructed 75, keeping Hampshire in touch with the run rate as they chased Surrey’s total. In the following year, in bowler-friendly conditions in the Benson and Hedges Final, he and Paul Terry stole runs from under the noses of Kent’s fielders to establish a momentum which was then enhanced by the later stroke players.

Educated at Manchester University and King’s College, London, he manages his own specialist business consultancy, based in Bath, on environmental issues. Given the number of new sports stadia being constructed in the United Kingdom, his address is bound to give a unique insight on a contemporary subject relating to such new building works. COMINGS AND GOINGS Terry Crump’s excellent Rose Bowl Round-Up winter editions, and the Rose Bowl website have given details of the numerous new signings for the forthcoming summer, i.e. Simon Jones, Ajantha Mendis, Shahid Afridi, Kabir Ali, Neil Mackenzie and Abdul Razzaq. There has never been such an influx of high quality players in a close season in Hampshire’s history. CHRIS TREMLETT It is always sad when a player who has graduated through the County’s system goes elsewhere. Chris Tremlett’s case is even more so. It means that in the last twenty years, only Shaun Udal and Adrian Aymes have enjoyed a normal career span in the first team after progressing through Hampshire’s youth system. And, of course, even the former did not quite see out his career with the County. It must be hoped that the hugely talented Liam Dawson, James Vince and Hamza Riazuddin of the current crop of youngsters are able to become first-team regulars in the future and remain with the County, at least for the most productive stages of their careers.
