This dissertation is the net result of my studies over the graduate years under the direction of Hunter Cadzow, my adviser, to whom I am first and most grateful. He took me into the fascinating recent literary trend of New Historicism and the dazzling ideas of Michel Foucault. From my long struggle with Foucault's thought, I have learned the lesson of the necessity to historicize or rethink human practices, institutions, or even literary terms beyond stereotyped perspectives. The dissertation reflects my concern to reconsider the term "Christian humanism." As a way of approaching the term. Chapter One tracks down its origin in the twentieth century and resituates its ideological freight in the English Renaissance by reviewing some of its important ideas. Christian humanism tiums out to be an ideology in our time to identify Christianity in humanism, divinity or spirituality in man. The notion of human divinity evolves into a theory of human dignity, human cooperation with divine grace in salvation, and even political radicalism when applied to the Renaissance humanist. At the same time, the enterprise to subsume Renaissance humanism under the umbrella term "Christian" fails to identify the peculiar historical situations of the period. It erases the very real difference between various forms of cultural representation of Christianity in the Renaissance. Christianity had undergone a long journey of transformation in the English I Renaissance, from the old Catholicism, to the Henrician Reformation, to the Elizabethan I Protestantism, and to the Puritan Revolution. To avoid the ahistrxical sense associated with 1 the term and to specify each individual condition in the evolution of Christian humanism, I I propose a differentiation between both the humanist and theological nature of Christian I hiunanism in each distinct period. I Chapter Two addresses Sir Thomas More as a Catholic humanist, who represents I English humanism before the Henrician Reformation and nationalism. Henry's break with f Rrxne gave momentum to the development of Tudor dynastic nationalism largely centered I I aroimd the monarch. It played a key role in transfcxming the cause of Cathdic humanism in [ the interest of the nation. t Chapter Three sets up Sir Thomas Hyot as a transitional figure in terms of English ! humanism, caught in the religious and political drive of Henrician nationalism. He is basically Catholic but desires to take a vital role in nation-making. Elyot demonstrates the Morean Catholic humanism in transition. Chapter Foiur defines Edmund Spenser as a Protestant humanist, whose nationalist cause is responsible for the Protestant cooptation of humanism in his work. In the age when the universal Church broke down and when the role of secular rulers became more and more central to national affairs, humanist participation in national government was indispensable to create the mystique of monarchy and thus the unity of the nation. These hiunanists, who each fell under particular pcditical, theological, and cultural regimes, reveal disparate strategies of Christian humanism.     Is There a Future for Italian Microhistory in the Age of Global History? Francesca Trivellato In the late 1970s and 80s, particularly after the appearance of Carlo Ginzburg’s The Cheese and the Worms (1976) and Giovanni Levi’s Inheriting Power (1985), Italian microhistory shook the ground of established historiographical paradigms and practices. Since then, as Anthony Grafton put it, “Microhistories have captivated readers, won places on syllabi, been translated into many languages – and enraged and delighted their [the authors’] fellow professionals” (2006, 62). Are the questions that propelled Italian microhistory still significant or have they lost impetus? How has the meaning of microhistory changed over the past thirty years? And what can this approach contribute nowadays, when ‘globalization’ and ‘global’ are the dominant keywords in the humanities and the social sciences – keywords that we hardly associate with anything micro? In what follows, I wish to put forth two arguments. I suggest that the potential of a microhistorical approach for global history remains underexploited. Since the 1980s, the encounter between Italian microhistory and global history has been confined primarily to the narrative form. A host of studies of individuals whose lives traversed multiple linguistic, political, and religious boundaries has enjoyed considerable success among scholars and the broad public alike. These are predicated on the idea that a micro- and biographical scale can best portray the entanglement of cultural traditions produced by the growing contacts and clashes between different societies that followed the sixteenth- century European geographical expansion. They also reflect a greater comfort among historians and the general reader, perhaps most pronounced in Anglophone countries, with narration rather than social scientific analysis.

    LIVES AND LETTERS, VOL. 1, NO. 1, SPRING 2009 Signs of Intelligence: William Herle’s Report of the Dutch Situation, 1573 On the 11 June 1573 the agent William Herle sent his patron William Cecil, Lord Burghley a lengthy intelligence report of a ‘Discourse’ held with Prince William of Orange, Stadtholder of the Netherlands.∗ Running to fourteen folio manuscript pages, the Discourse records the substance of numerous conversations between Herle and Orange and details Orange’s efforts to persuade Queen Elizabeth to come to the aid of the Dutch against Spanish Habsburg imperial rule. The main thrust of the document exhorts Elizabeth to accept the sovereignty of the Low Countries in order to protect England’s naval interests and lead a league of protestant European rulers against Spain. This essay explores the circumstances surrounding the occasion of the Discourse and the context of the text within Herle’s larger corpus of correspondence. In the process, I will consider the methods by which the study of the material features of manuscripts can lead to a wider consideration of early modern political, secretarial and archival practices. THE CONTEXT By the spring of 1573 the insurrection in the Netherlands against Spanish rule was seven years old. Elizabeth had withdrawn her covert support for the English volunteers aiding the Dutch rebels, and was busy entertaining thoughts of marriage with Henri, Duc d’Alençon, brother to the King of France. Rejecting the idea of French assistance after the massacre of protestants on St Bartholomew’s day in Paris the previous year, William of Orange was considering approaching the protestant rulers of Europe, mostly German Lutheran sovereigns, to form a strong alliance against Spanish Catholic hegemony.

McNeill By George Vrtis, Carleton College In fall 1998, John McNeill addressed the Georgetown University community to help launch the university’s new capital campaign. Sharing the stage with Georgetown’s president and other dignitaries, McNeill focused his comments on the two “great things” he saw going on at Georgetown and why each merited further support. One of those focal points was teaching and the need to constantly find creative new ways to inspire, share knowledge, and build intellectual community among faculty and students. The other one centered on scholarship. Here McNeill suggested that scholars needed to move beyond the traditional confines of academic disciplines laid down in the 19th century, and engage in more innovative, imaginative, and interdisciplinary research. Our intellectual paths have been very fruitful for a long time now, McNeill observed, but diminishing returns have set in, information and methodologies have exploded, and new roads beckon. To help make his point, McNeill likened contemporary scholars to a drunk person searching for his lost keys under a lamppost, “not because he lost them there but because that is where the light is.” The drunk-swirling-around-the-lamppost metaphor was classic McNeill. Throughout his academic life, McNeill has always conveyed his ideas in clear, accessible, often memorable, and occasionally humorous language. And he has always ventured into the darkness, searchlight in hand, helping us to see and understand the world and ourselves ever more clearly with each passing year.

Rather than being disinterested in exploration during the reign of Henry VIII, this dissertation proves that the English were aware of what was happening in the Atlantic world through the transnational flow of information, imagined the potentials of the New World for both trade and colonization, and actively participated in the opening of transatlantic trade through transnational networks. To do this, the entirety of the Atlantic, all four continents, are considered and the English activity there analyzed. This dissertation uses a variety of methods, examining cartographic and literary interpretations and representations of the New World, familial ties, merchant networks, voyages of exploration and political and diplomatic material to explore my subject across the social strata of England, giving equal weight to common merchants’ and scholars’ perceptions of the Atlantic as I do to Henry VIII’s court. Through these varied methods, this dissertation proves that the creation of the British Atlantic was not state sponsored, like the Spanish Atlantic, but a transnational space inhabited and expanded by merchants, adventurers and the scholars who created imagined spaces for the English.
