How to configure the installation of Microsoft Store apps to a separate drive. When it comes to Windows, we have a lot of independence, when it comes to where exactly we need to install our favourite applications and programs. In the case of normal desktop apps, we can install the programs in any location on our hard drive or SSD, despite the fact the installer tries to install the same within the program files of the root partition, or the C drive. But if you are having low space on the root partition, or the C drive, you can always install the same in a different location as per your requirements. But the things are not the same when it comes to Microsoft Store apps. When it comes to downloading apps from the Microsoft Store, the user apparently has no choice other than leaving it to Windows to install it in the default folder in the root partition. But you can simply change some settings and configure Windows to download Microsoft Store apps to a specific drive and save space on the root partition or the C drive for most users. If you have a specific drive for games or programs, you can even change the location of the installed app from the Microsoft Store, after the download and the download and installation is complete. So without any further delay, let’s get started with, how you can change the drive or location to install Microsoft Store apps. Changing the installation location for new Microsoft Store apps. Apps which are already installed in the system will not be moved to the new install location- only new apps will be installed there. If you really want old apps in the new location, you’ll have to uninstall them first, and then reinstall them (after you have changed the install location of course). By doing this however, you can lose the app's data. 3. You cannot set the install location to be a mapped network drive. 4. There is no need to format a drive in order to use it for installing Store apps. 5. Disconnecting the drive you selected for installing apps will make the ones that have already been installed there to stop working, until you reconnect the drive again. 6. If you try to install a new app while the selected drive is disconnected, then the app will be installed to the default install directory, which is This PC in your C drive ( %LocalAppData%\Packages , or C:\Users\ USERNAME \AppData\Local\Packages , where USERNAME is the name of your account). As you can guess, they will not be moved to the other directory when it is available again- they will stay where they were installed. 7. New Store apps will be installed inside a new folder in the drive you selected, named WindowsApps . This folder will be encrypted with Encrypting File System ( EFS ), so that only your account will be able to access it. Changing the Default Install Location for Store Apps in Windows 10. In order to select another location for installing new apps, all you have to do is navigate to the corresponding setting in Windows 10- no need to mess with the registry or policies. Step 1: Go to Settings. Open the Start menu and select Settings . Step 2: Select the “System” Option. In the Settings window, click on the System option. Step 3: Highlight the “Storage” Item. From the System settings window, click on the Storage item from the sidebar. Step 4: Change Apps Install Location. Now, in the Storage configurations screen and under the Save locations heading, you can see an option that reads “ New apps will save to: ”, along with a dropdown box. All you need to do is click on that dropdown box and select the desired install location from the list of drives that appear. That’s all, now close the window and try installing a new app to verify that it goes inside the WindowsApps folder inside the selected drive. Microsoft introduced the Windows Store apps called ‘Metro Apps’ with Windows 8. Microsoft later decided to call them ‘Modern Apps’. And as of today, in Windows 10, the store apps are simply called as “Windows Apps”. Microsoft uses a hidden folder named WindowsApps to install these Metro/Modern apps. The folder is located within the Program Files folder in the system drive (C:\). Data for all of the Modern Apps are stored in the AppData folder under the user’s profile. Installation and temporary data folders for Windows Apps. As with older programs, Windows uses different folders to store an app’s installation files and the data (such as sessions, in-app downloads; etc). Here are the details: Installation folder – Apps are installed to the WindowsApps folder. You can find it at this location – C:\Program Files . Temporary data folder (Isolated storage) – Modern apps save their data at the following location – C:\Users\ <username>\AppData\Local\Packages . Do note that both folders are hidden. They will not show under the list of folders unless you enable the display of hidden files in Windows 10. If you have enabled the hidden items, then the folders will appear in a lighter color, indicating that it is a hidden item. You have found the WindowsApps folder. But you cannot access it yet. When you try to open, Windows will notify that you do not have permission to access the folder. You will click on Continue hoping that you would gain authority, but Windows will block your way by throwing the Permission Denied notice. Why is it inaccessible? It is because you do not have permission to read or write to the folder. When you click continue, Windows tries to gain permission using an elevated (administrator) request, but since you’re not an owner of the folder, it gets denied again. How to Access WindowsApps folder. You need to jump into the folder’s security settings and make yourself the owner in order to access it normally. Just follow the few steps below to get yourself in. Right-click on the WindowsApps folder and switch to the security tab. Click on Continue and then click on Change in front of the owner.
