Minister of Health House of Commons Ottawa, ON K1A 0A6 Re: Dedicated ALS Research Funding Dear Minister Petitpas Taylor, I am writing to you today on behalf of the nearly 3,000 Canadians living with ALS today and the 1,000 Canadians who will be diagnosed each year in the future, all of who continue to face the realities of this challenging and terminal disease – realities that led Carol Skinner and Eddy Lefrançois, two Canadians affected by ALS, to start a letter-writing campaign. The campaign asked Members of Parliament to hold themselves accountable following their unanimous approval of Motion M-105, which called on the government to play a leadership role in supporting ALS research and national efforts to find a cure. Over the course of four months, more than 2,300 Canadians joined Carol and Eddy in their initiative. But even that short time proved to be too long for someone living with ALS: Eddy Lefrançois died in January 2019 before he could see the results of his initiative. The reality is that ALS continues to be a devastating disease and the impact on families – emotionally, financially, and psychologically – is tremendous. Despite advancements in research the causes of ALS are unknown, and 80 per cent of people with ALS die within two to five years of being diagnosed. Since the unanimous approval of M-105 in April 2017, there has been little action from the federal government to act on the repeated calls from the ALS community to invest in dedicated, sustained funding for ALS research.

In total, six MPs had their portfolios changed, addressing two issues for the federal government: 1. The Ministry of Indigenous & Northern Affairs was split in two: the previous Minister of Health, Jane Philpott, will now take over the new Ministry of Indigenous Services and Carolyn Bennett will remain responsible for the Ministry of Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs. To replace Minister Philpott at Health, it is noteworthy that Ginette Petitpas Taylor was promoted from outside cabinet, where she had been serving as Parliamentary Secretary to Minster of Finance. 2. To fill the vacancy in the Ministry of Public Services & Procurement caused by Min Judy Foote stepping down last week, Carla Qualtrough was promoted from the Ministry of Sport & Persons with Disabilities. This will ensure that we have a comprehensive regulatory framework in place at the time of implementation that can be communicated and enforced. As we are concerned that the summer 2018 target for implementation will not allow sufficient time for this framework to be implemented, we urge you to develop a timeline that outlines how and when the various federal, provincial and municipal components will be developed. The cost of law enforcement’s testing and enforcing of impairment, including equipment and training, must be fully funded through the cannabis tax or by the federal or provincial government so that costs are not downloaded onto municipalities. Additionally, community peace officers must be a component of the enforcement activities given their role in traffic safety. These officers will require appropriate protocols and resources so they can detain potential offenders until other law enforcement agencies can validate impairment and, if necessary, lay a charge. These are just some of the many issues relating to impairment.

Minister of Public Safety [email protected] Dear Prime Minister Trudeau and Ministers Mendicino, Hajdu, and Blair, I’m writing to express Mennonite Central Committee Canada’s concern about the continued lack of travel possibilities for refugees to resettle to Canada. Currently, only those refugees with a permanent residence visa issued before pandemic travel restrictions were introduced in March 2020 are being admitted. There are more than 25 million refugees globally. Resettlement has been a small but important tool to provide a durable solution for some of these refugees and we encourage Canada to continue to play a leadership role in resettlement. As the first organization to sign a Sponsorship Agreement in March 1979, MCC is proud to be a part of that work. Since 1979 we have helped resettle more than 12,500 refugees in many communities across Canada. Last March, when arrivals of refugees were cut to almost none, it was devastating for the many sponsors we work with. In 2020, MCC welcomed 118 refugees through Privately Sponsored Refugee (PSR) and Blended Visa Office Referred (BVOR) programs. That is only 20% of the number we resettled the previous year. We encourage the Canadian government to resume issuing visas for refugees approved for resettlement in Canada.
