“The Music from ‘Peter Gunn’”--Henry Mancini (1958) Added to the National Registry: 2010 Essay by Mark A. Robinson (guest post)* Henry Mancini Henry Mancini (1924-1994) was the celebrated composer of a parade of song standards, particularly remembered for his work in television and film composition. Among his sparkling array of memorable melodies are the music for “The Pink Panther” films, the “Love Theme from ‘Romeo and Juliet’,” and his two Academy Award-winning collaborations with lyricist Johnny Mercer, “Moon River” for the 1961 film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” and the title song for the 1962 feature “Days of Wine and Roses.” Born Enrico Nicola Mancini in the Little Italy neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio, Henry Mancini was raised in West Aliquippa, Pennsylvania, near Pittsburgh. Though his father wished his son to become a teacher, Mancini was inspired by the music of Hollywood, particularly that of the 1935 Cecil B. DeMille film “The Crusades.” This fascination saw him embark on a lifelong journey into composition. His first instrument of choice was the piccolo, but soon he drifted toward the piano, studying under Pittsburgh concert pianist and Stanley Theatre conductor Max Adkins. Upon graduating high school, Mancini matriculated at the Carnegie Institute of Technology, but quickly transferred to the Julliard School of Music, concentrating his studies in piano, orchestration, and composition. When America entered World War II, Mancini enlisted in the United States Army in 1943. Assigned to the 28th Air Force Band, he made many connections in the music industry that would serve him well in the post-war years. -

Billy Preston Billy Preston was a soul singer and pianist who, in addition to having a successful solo career, collaborated with some of the greatest names in the music industry, including the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Little Richard, Ray Charles, George Harrison, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Sam Cooke, Sammy Davis Jr., Sly Stone, Aretha Franklin, the Jackson 5, Quincy Jones, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Often called “the Fifth Beatle,” this former child prodigy left one of the most profound and prolific legacies in music. William Everett Preston was born in Houston, Texas in 1946. He began playing piano at age three, and by ten he had joined the band of gospel great Mahalia Jackson. At age twelve he appeared in the 1958 film St. Louis Blues, portraying blues composer W.C. Handy as a young man. In the 1960s Preston performed with Little Richard and Ray Charles, and became a regular singer and pianist on the ABC television series Shindig. Preston went on to a successful career as a session musician, including lending his talents to the Beatle’s Let It Be album. That collaboration led to his signing to the Beatles’ Apple label, and in 1969 his solo effort, produced by George Harrison, was released. The album That's the Way God Planned It and the single of the same name met with limited success, but in 1972 he released an instrumental funk single, "Outa-Space," that reached #2 in the U.S. and won the Grammy award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. Over the next two years, Preston enjoyed more number one hits including "Will It Go Round In Circles" and "Nothing From Nothing." He was the first guest musical artist on the premier episode of the popular TV show Saturday Night Live. -

XY Model Universality Class, but with Inverted Temperature [1]
INTRODUCTION: • Duality arguments suggest that the superconductor phase transition is in the 3d XY model universality class, but with inverted temperature [1]. Thus, XY model symmetric (broken) phase ↔ normal (supercon- ducting) phase of the superconductor. • Duality predicts that the Abrikosov vortex tension T scales with the XY model exponent νXY = 0.6723. The penetration depth λ (or ′ inverse photon mass) is also argued to scale with exponent ν = νXY. • However, universality has not been unambiguously observed: ′ - High-Tc YBa2Cu3O7−δ experiments [3, 4] observe ν ≈ 0.3 . 0.5 - Monte Carlo simulations of the Ginzburg-Landau theory appear to favour ν′ ∼ 0.3 [5]. • A problem for the Monte Carlo simulations is that the duality is ex- pected to be valid only in a very narrow temperature range around the critical temperature. • In order to avoid the problem above, we study a special limit of Ginzburg-Landau theory, the frozen superconductor (FZS) (an integer-valued gauge theory), which is exactly dual to the XY-Villain model at all temperatures. Thus, the transition in FZS is bound to be in the XY model universality class. Studying the critical quantities of FZS can shed light on the problems faced in the Ginzburg-Landau theory simulations. Detailed results are published in [2]. The Music We Watch Kelsey De Pree Music History II April 5, 2017 Music is universal. It is present from the beginning of history appearing in all cultures, nations, economic classes, and styles. Music in America is heard on radios, in cars, on phones, and in stores. Television commercials feature jingles so viewers can remember the products; radio ads sing phone numbers so that listeners can recall them. In schools, students sing songs to learn subjects like math, history, and English, and also to learn about general knowledge like the days of the week, months of the year, and presidents of the United States. With the amount of music that is available, it is not surprising that music has also made its way into movie theatres and has become one of the primary agents for conveying emotion and plot during a cinematic production. -

However, while Disney often has been associated with themes such as childhood, magic, and innocence, many of the company’s animated films have simultaneously been criticized for their offensive and quite problematic take on race and ethnicity, as well their heavy reliance on cultural stereotypes. This study aims to evaluate Disney’s portrayals of racial and ethnic minorities, as well as determine whether or not the nature of the company’s portrayals have become more culturally sensitive with time. To accomplish this, seven animated feature films produced by Disney were analyzed. These analyses are of a qualitative nature, with a focus on imagology and postcolonial literary theory, and the results have simultaneously been compared to corresponding criticism and analyses by other authors and scholars. Based on the overall results of the analyses, it does seem as if Disney is becoming more progressive and culturally sensitive with time. However, while most of the recent films are free from the clearly racist elements found in the company’s earlier productions, it is quite evident that Disney still tends to rely heavily on certain cultural stereotypes. -

arts Article Cultural “Authenticity” as a Conflict-Ridden Hypotext: Mulan (1998), Mulan Joins the Army (1939), and a Millennium-Long Intertextual Metamorphosis Zhuoyi Wang Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures, Hamilton College, Clinton, NY 13323, USA; [email protected] Received: 6 June 2020; Accepted: 7 July 2020; Published: 10 July 2020 Abstract: Disney’s Mulan (1998) has generated much scholarly interest in comparing the film with its hypotext: the Chinese legend of Mulan. While this comparison has produced meaningful criticism of the Orientalism inherent in Disney’s cultural appropriation, it often ironically perpetuates the Orientalist paradigm by reducing the legend into a unified, static entity of the “authentic” Chinese “original”. This paper argues that the Chinese hypotext is an accumulation of dramatically conflicting representations of Mulan with no clear point of origin. It analyzes the Republican-era film adaptation Mulan Joins the Army (1939) as a cultural palimpsest revealing attributes associated with different stages of the legendary figure’s millennium-long intertextual metamorphosis, including a possibly nomadic woman warrior outside China proper, a Confucian role model of loyalty and filial piety, a Sinitic deity in the Sino-Barbarian dichotomy, a focus of male sexual fantasy, a Neo-Confucian exemplar of chastity, and modern models for women established for antagonistic political agendas. Similar to the previous layers of adaptation constituting the hypotext, Disney’s Mulan is simply another hypertext continuing Mulan’s metamorphosis, and it by no means contains the most dramatic intertextual change. Productive criticism of Orientalist cultural appropriations, therefore, should move beyond the dichotomy of the static East versus the change-making West, taking full account of the immense hybridity and fluidity pulsing beneath the fallacy of a monolithic cultural “authenticity”. -

Article Balancing Gender and Power: How Disney’s Hercules Fails to Go the Distance Cassandra Primo Departments of Business and Sociology, McDaniel College, Westminster, MD 21157, USA; [email protected] Received: 26 September 2018; Accepted: 14 November; Published: 16 November 2018 Abstract: Disney’s Hercules (1997) includes multiple examples of gender tropes throughout the film that provide a hodgepodge of portrayals of traditional conceptions of masculinity and femininity. Hercules’ phenomenal strength and idealized masculine body, coupled with his decision to relinquish power at the end of the film, may have resulted in a character lacking resonance because of a hybridization of stereotypically male and female traits. The film pivots from hypermasculinity to a noncohesive male identity that valorizes the traditionally-feminine trait of selflessness. This incongruous mixture of traits that comprise masculinity and femininity conflicts with stereotypical gender traits that characterize most Disney princes and princesses. As a result of the mixed messages pertaining to gender, Hercules does not appear to have spurred more progressive portrayals of masculinity in subsequent Disney movies, showing the complexity underlying gender stereotypes. Introduction Disney’s influence in children’s entertainment has resulted in the scrutiny of gender stereotypes in its films (Do Rozario 2004; Dundes et al. 2018; England et al. 2011; Giroux and Pollock 2010). Disney’s Hercules (1997), however, has been largely overlooked in academic literature exploring the evolution of gender portrayals by the media giant. The animated film is a modernization of the classic myth in which the eponymous hero is a physically intimidating protagonist that epitomizes manhood.
