Dogen, ShobIJgenzo '"Raihaitokuzui"l FOLK RELIGIOUS AND BUDDHIST INARI IMAGES This paper investigates the historical and ideological roots of the syncretism between Soto Zen and the cult of Inari, which venerates the god of the rice harvest and fertility often represented by its chief mes­ senger and avatar, the fox (kitsune). This example of Buddhist-folk re­ ligious syncretism is most evident in a small network of branch temples of So to which, although affiliated with one of the sect's two main temples at Eiheiji, has its own main temple in Toyokawa city in Aichi prefecture southeast of Nagoya and several subsidiary temples, including one in Tokyo Akasaka. Since religious institutions are communitarian by nature, rationalization cannot easily be adopted and specialization tends to be delayed. Moreover, conceptual models of society have shifted from the moral order to the technical order (see Wilson 1976). If we use the term secularization to refer to this process whereby the domain of religion as a supernatural order gradually shrinks along with structural differentiation in the social system as a whole, in a society which has attained a high degree of industrialization religion becomes a private affair, driven out from the center of society and answering only to the needs of the individual. If society indeed only consists in mutual actions of anonymous role- players who have become depersonalized by the rationalization process，can religion still have a positive relation to society? This is the theme I would like to deal with in this essay. If, as Thomas Luckmann claims，secularization is the result of a unique historical combination of cultural, religious, and socio-structural conditions (1976，p.ll), then combination patterns different from that of Western society are possible. Yanagawa and Abe have argued that one key for solving the problem of the integration of Japanese society is to be found in ancestor worship. Their point of departure is “the assumption that the integration function that the ‘church’ exercised in Western societies has never been performed either by ‘institutional’ or ‘organizational’ religions in Japan” (1978，p.12).

Despite its long heritage, however, “the single most essential task of the Way of Tea in the future will be to find approaches that are ever fresh, but still firmly rooted in tradition.” These last words of this book of Sen Soshitsu should penetrate the heart of all Western lovers of chanoyu. Because this book is very important for introducing Japanese artistic thought to the West, a few critical remarks are in order. For the readers who are not well acquainted with Japanese texts the title of quoted texts should be translated. The annotations should also explain Japanese words sufficiently because most Western readers are not familiar with them. The worship of Inari-san (the “fox” deity) is an excellent example for showing how the two main religions of Japan, ohintoism and Buddhism, interrelate in modern times. Consequently, Smyers divided her time during fieldwork between a Shinto shrine (Fushimi Inari in Kyoto) and a Buddhist temple (Toyokawa Inari in Aichi Prefecture).
