This appeal is concerned with an attempt to halt a large-scale development of the north-west part of Great Guana Cay (“the Cay”), an island north of Great Abaco on the northern edge of the Bahamas archipelago. In the course of the litigation some additional issues, including an issue as to apparent judicial bias, have arisen. 2. The Bahamas are known throughout the world for their natural beauty. It is also well known that their rich natural resources, and especially their coral reefs, are at risk from indiscriminate development. There is an admirable explanation of the background to this appeal in the judgment of the Rt Honourable Dame Joan Sawyer, the President of the Court of Appeal, which I gratefully adopt (paras 11 to 13): “The Bahamas is a country of 701 islands, cays and reefs which stretches in an arc from approximately 58 miles southeast of the east coast of Florida in the United States of America to just north of Hispaniola. It is separated from Florida by the Gulf Stream and from the Greater Antilles by the Old Bahama Channel. -

The excess of CO2 could notably affect the benthic communities of calcifiers and macro- 5 phytes in different aspects (photosynthesis, respiration and calcification). Seaweeds are key species of nearshore benthic ecosystems of the Baltic Sea. They frequently are the substratum of fouling epibionts like bryozoans and tubeworms. Most of those species secrete calcified structures and could therefore be impacted by the seawater pCO2. On the other hand, the biological activity of the host may substantially modu- 10 late the pH and pCO2 conditions in the thallus boundary layer where the epibionts live. The aim of the present study was to test the sensitivity of seaweed macrofouling com- munities to higher pCO2 concentrations. -

The diversity of Silurian microconchids is still poorly understood. Here, a new microconchid tubeworm species, Palaeoconchus wilsoni, is described from the Silurian (Ludlow) encrusting rugose corals from Estonia (Saaremaa Island) and a brachiopod shell from Sweden (Gotland). In Estonia, the microconchids are a dominant constituent of the encrusting assemblages, associated with cornulitids, Anticalyptraea, auloporids, trepostome bryozoans, hederelloids and enigmatic ascodictyids. It is notable that these Silurian encrusting assemblages are clearly dominated by tentaculitoids (microconchids, cornulitids and Anticalyptraea) which very often co-exist on the same coral host. Morphologically similar microconchids and Anticalyptraea may have exploited a more similar ecological niche than the straight-shelled cornulitids. However, the clear predominance of microconchids over Anticalyptraea in the communities may indicate that this genus was a less effective competitor for food than microconchid tubeworms. -

Ross 2 William Procter started work on the survey of the marine fauna of the Mount Desert Island region in the spring of 1926 after a summer’s spotting of the territory with a hand dredge. This work was continued from the last week in June until the first week of September through 1932. The specimens from this collection effort were brought back to Mount Desert Island recently. Although Procter noted that this inventorywas not intended to generate a complete list of all species recorded from the Mount Desert Island area, this inventory is the foundation on which all future work on the marine fauna in the region will build. An inven- tory of this magnitude has not been replicated in the region to date. This publication is the result of a major recovery effort for the collection initiated and funded by Acadia National Park. Many of the specimens in this collection were loosing preservative or were already dried out. Over a two year effort, Maine Natural History Observatory worked closely with Acadia National Park to re-house the collection in archival containers, re-hydrate specimens (through stepped concentrations of ethyl alcohol) that had dried, fully catalog the collection, and update the synonymy of specimens. -

Acta Palaeontologica Polonica 52 (2): 391–399. The Bajocian tubeworm Spirorbis midfordensis, previously regarded as a spirorbid polychaete, is reinterpreted as a microconchid and assigned to Punctaconchus gen. nov. along with two new species, Punctaconchus ampliporus sp. nov. (Toarcian?, Aalenian–Bathonian), the type species of the new genus, and Punctaconchus palmeri sp. nov. (Bathonian). Microconchids are a mostly Palaeozoic group of tubeworms that are probably more closely related to modern lopho− phorate phyla than they are to polychaetes. Punctaconchus, the youngest unequivocal microconchid, is characterised by having large pores (punctae) penetrating the tube wall, which has a fibrous or platy lamellar microstructure, and ripplemark−like transverse ridges on the tube interior. In both morphology and ecology it is a remarkable homeomorph of the polychaete Spirorbis. Key words: Microconchida, morphology, Jurassic, England, France.
