10 Sport Relief Mile Monty wins on points

Killin's only boxer, 16 year old Monty Ogilvie, took part in a show in Polmont Prison on.8th May. In bout five he was up against another l6 year old, Keith Parker of Maddison Club. They put on a cracking contest and from the bell both set about their task of entertaining but also winning. It was evident early on that Monty was the heavier puncher - he was the one getting support from the inmates - and this spurred him on to take the opener. Round two saw Monty display his skills and his confidence. It may have appeared one- sided but Parker fought and entertained to the end. Stirling club coaches were seeing the promise Monty displays in training and he did Killin and his club proud to record a unanimous points win. Ian Asher

15 Exit Youth Group The Exit Youth Group (Crianlarich and Tyndrum) had a fantastic weekend away at Ardeonaig Outdoor Centre on 11th-13th April. 18 young people and 5 adults spent 2 days there, experiencing lots of different activities - including high rope assault course, canoeing, gorge walking and archery. The weather was very cold, but mostly dry - and everybody had a fab time! The cost of the weekend was funded almost entirely by a National Lottery Awards for All grant, so that participants only had to pay a nominal £10 of the total £92 per head costs themselves. Thanks to all the staff at Ardeonaig, the Youth Group leaders and parents who helped during the weekend, and the National Lottery, for giving the group this opportunity! We bought our race- cards as if we knew what to do and set about picking the winners - some were chosen because we liked the colours of their silks, some because we liked the horses’ names, others were named after places we had visited - all very scientific! A very kind supervisor at the Tote came to the rescue of some of us who were very perplexed. He explained the system and it all became clear. By the end of the meeting we were discussing tactics like old hands. In spite of the weather (a few showers and a stiff breeze at times) we had a great day. The Course is in lovely countryside, there were plenty of refreshment opportunities, the horses looked beautiful and there was lots of interest in the characters around us, both spectators and the racing fraternity. We met many friendly people also enjoying their day at the races and finally we reached our finishing post - the Royal George Hotel in Perth - where a delicious meal was ready for us. Then it was home to Killin and our own "stables". Margaret MacGregor 28 SWRI: A Flutter at the Races

37 Disorderly Behaviour

I was itching, I was twitching, I was sensing I was tensing, So I went to see the doc who said to me, 'There's disorder in your movement And you'll only get improvement If you visit the disorder surgery'.

There I met a Doctor Den, The most affable of men, Who also itched and twitched apparently, So claiming my disorder Was really quite in order And that I'd live to see another day.

He thought that melancholy Had stopped me feeling jolly And made me think that I was really ill - A case of hypochondria With introversion mania Induced by intellectual overkill!

So convoluted was my case That his report took forty days To settle in the Perthshire wilderness - A document voluminous That hardly was illuminous, With little more than what I had to stress. Personal Reflections of the Killin Railway He noted that my wife and I An enlarged edition of the booklet "Personal Reflections of the Lived in a cottage way up high, Killin Railway" will shortly be available at a price of £6.95 in the So could this be the reason for Library and Post Office. Watch out for it. my plight? Perhaps the lack of oxygen So far up in a Scottish glen Had given all stability a fright!

He maintained that I was treating Symptoms he thought vague and fleeting As if they represented something real, Like waterworks infections And air pump disconnections That made me, as a Scotsman, feel unweel!

Apart from citing my complaint And quoting tests with much restraint, He offered only certain diagnoses; So no treatment was suggested, Although it was requested, And I was left in limbo with my poses!

If disorder's in your movement You will always get improvement In a clinic where disorder is systemic: You'll double all your trouble, Exacerbate your wobble And improve your past performance as a mimic! Pondocharty

40 Callander Farmers’ Market Freak weather wrecked the Spring Farmers' Market in Callander on 6th April when sudden and unexpected squalls gusted through the Station Road car park in what was otherwise a calm and fairly wind-free day. Market stalls were blown over and damaged just before opening time. Produce went flying but fortunately no-one was hurt. In the interests of health and safety, the decision was taken by Stirling Farmers' Market Manager, Bernard, to cancel the market. Said Bernard, 'It was a great disappointment to all the market's visitors and customers as well as producers, some of whom will have incurred a considerable financial loss because of the perishable nature of their goods. Everyone makes a really big effort for the farmers’ markets but on this occasion it was just blown away. Hopefully the Summer Callander Farmers' Market planned for Sunday June 1st and run on behalf of Callander Development Trust will see things back to normal.' All the regular producers will be there from 11am until 4pm, offering a delicious range of goodies from home baking, breads, free range eggs, local beef, mutton and lamb, pork, bacon, venison and game, natural fruit drinks, jams, cheese and oatcakes, shellfish with fresh and smoked fish, local crafts and plants for sale. Why not help reduce food miles and generate sustainable rural employment by supporting this community initiative. The latest Loch Tay Food Chain meeting has put a call out to residents of the area to help us compile an audit of local food resources. The intention is to create a comprehensive directory that would include details of all local food producers, food suppliers, land available for food production as well as any 'food for free' that can be found locally, such as wild fruit and fungi etc. We also discussed running a local produce and farmers market in September, following on from last year's successful event. We are hoping this year to include much more in the way of local food and would encourage any local producers to think about what they could offer. We have provisionally pencilled in the 13th September from 10am to 2pm in Killin. Confirmed details will be available by the next issue of Killin News. There was also a discussion about the pruning of fruit trees. Many trees are allowed to grow to a point where the quality of the fruit deteriorates because of a fear of over pruning. Ally Baird Ltd
