AACTA Announces Short Film Nominees for the 4Th AACTA Awards

AUSTRALIAN ACADEMY ANNOUNCES FIRST NOMINEES FOR 4TH AACTA AWARDS The countdown to Australia’s top screen Awards has officially started, with the first nominees for the 4th Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts (AACTA) Awards announced today. Nominees were announced in the Best Short Animation and Best Short Fiction Film categories for the 4th AACTA Awards, which will also see Australia’s best film, television and documentaries awarded in Sydney in January 2015. The Video Dating Tape of Desmondo Ray, Aged 33 & 3/4, which screened at SXSW 2014 and St Kilda Film Festival 2014, is by writer-director Steve Baker, a previous Tropfest and AFI Award winner. This darkly funny short film portrays Raymond, a loner with a penchant for peeing in the rain, as a likeable, if not likely, dating prospect. Also funny and touching is Love In The Time Of March Madness - a ‘tall short’ about a 6’4” woman whose success on the basketball court is at odds with her luck in love. -

Talent USA: Australian creatives head stateside Tuesday 13 June 2017: Eleven directors, six screenwriters and ten online creators are being funded by Screen Australia to travel to the USA in June for a series of career growth opportunities. The screenwriters’ delegation is being co-sponsored by the Australian Writers Guild (AWG) and Scripted Ink. The directors and screenwriters will participate in Screen Australia’s Talent LA program taking part in a bespoke course of masterclasses, professional development activities and industry networking. The online creators will perform and host workshops at the world’s largest online video conference – Vidcon. “Given the burgeoning international demand for distinctive and engaging screen content, it is more important than ever for Screen Australia to promote and profile both our best creatives as well as production companies to the international sector,” said Richard Harris, Head of Business and Audience. “This Talent USA mission will showcase some of Australia’s most exciting emerging creative talent across feature film, TV and online to the American industry, while at the same time offering them a unique opportunity to access some of the most plugged-in creative and commercial minds in the business.” TALENT LA (June 26-29) Talent LA will be held at Charlie’s and the Creative Collective, the Australians in Film space at Raleigh Studios in West Hollywood. Leading US screen industry practitioners including Meg LeFauve, Sheila Hanahan MEDIA RELEASE Taylor, Joan Scheckel and Judith Weston will host a series of professional development and creative masterclasses. The Implications of Implementations What makes a tax system politically acceptable? A review of the evidence Sally-Ann Joseph* 1. Introduction The political impact of the tax law should not be underestimated. There is nowhere where the intersection between the people and their government is as important as in the area of taxation. Indeed, it is the people that fund the government through their labour, capital and consumption. As the sources of the money that the government spends, people expect tax issues not only to be prominent on the public political agenda but also to conform to the principles of equity, efficiency and simplicity. While this century has seen few countries embrace new tax regimes, Australia has bucked this trend. There has been the goods and services tax, the carbon tax and two mining taxes: the resources super profits tax (RSPT) and the mining resource rent tax (MRRT). Effective tax reform requires both sound principles of public finance and political acceptability.1 This paper focuses on what is required, politically, when implementing a new tax regime. After a brief introduction in section 2 to the Australian political landscape and government regulatory guidelines, section 3 explores the lessons to be learnt from the RSPT and MRRT. This is followed in section 4 by an analysis of these taxes against the tax design principles of efficiency, equity and simplicity. Section 5 contains concluding remarks. 2. The Australian political landscape 2.1 Parliament Australia has a Westminster-style government where the Parliament consists of both the Executive and Legislature. This can be contrasted to other forms of government, such as that in the United States, where the Executive is separate from, and not directly answerable to, the Legislature. -

Mia Wasikowska to star in Mirrah Foulkes’ debut feature Judy and Punch Wednesday 25 October 2017: Actress turned writer/director Mirrah Foulkes is set to make her feature directorial debut with Judy and Punch - an origin story that will re-imagine the classic puppet show with Mia Wasikowska (Tracks, Stoker, Maps to the Stars) in the starring role of Judy. The VICE Media Australia with Blue-Tongue Films feature has attracted major production investment from VICE Media (USA) and Screen Australia, in association with Film Victoria. Produced by Michele Bennett (Mr Inbetween, Chopper) alongside Blue-Tongue Films’ Nash Edgerton (Mr Inbetween, The Square) and VICE Media’s Danny Gabai (Bad Batch), Judy and Punch will be executive produced by Oscar-nominated Vincent Landay (Her, Being John Malkovich) and VICE Media’s Chief Creative Officer Eddy Moretti. Cornerstone Films is attached for international sales. Judy and Punch is a live-action reinterpretation of the story of ‘Punch and Judy’, a puppet play traditionally told with marionettes. Set in the fictional town of Seaside, it follows two puppeteers – the vain but charismatic Punch and his resilient and talented wife Judy - as they attempt to resurrect their show as a means of escaping their decrepit town. Described by Ms Foulkes as “a crazy mix of fantasy, feminism and fanaticism”, the world she has created for Judy and Punch is coarse and brutal, bubbling with violence, misogyny and magic. “Mirrah has written a brilliantly entertaining and highly original script, and has such a unique vision as a MEDIA RELEASE director,” said producers Michele Bennett and Nash Edgerton.
