You can be freed from all kinds of things; usually it will be a relief. Being freed from war is of a different order of magnitude. In the case of the Second World War, it meant that the people of Oss had to live under the German occupation for more than four years. It also meant that there were men and women who worked for the liberation. Allied forces, members of the resistance and other groups; it was not without risk and they could lose their lives from it.
