N.B. The squad lists included in the Statistics Handbook are the A lists supplied to UEFA by the clubs. In addition, clubs are required to supply a B list of players born on or after 1 January 1988 and who have been with the club in question for an uninterrupted period of two years since their 15th birthday. These players are also eligible to play in the UEFA Europa League. See page 114 for more details. 4 UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE | Season 2009/10 Introduction Welcome to the Group Stage of the first UEFA Europa League, and to a new era for UEFA’s club competitions. Essentially, the expansion means that teams from emerging football nations or lesser- known clubs will have a better chance than ever to challenge for honours, reflecting the rapid strides that the game is experiencing across Europe. It is a broader, more balanced platform from which the whole European game can grow. The new format is designed to mirror more closely the UEFA Champions League, with a proper group phase with home-and-away matches. This in turn will provide an opportunity to further develop the financial potential of the competition for the benefit of the participating clubs. Furthermore, the introduction of centralised TV rights sales as from the Group Stage, split kick-off times, and a new logo and visual identity, will ensure enhanced exposure and coverage of the tournament. Of course, the core elements of the game have not changed: the clubs, the players, the fans. And, crucially, the referees. From the Group Stage onwards, an experimental system of five match officials will be in place, with additional assistant referees providing two extra pairs of eyes from their positions on the goal- lines. The progress of the experiment adds just another layer to what promises to be a fascinating competition. The success of any competition relies first and foremost on the quality of the football on display, and the excitement that it generates among the fans. The Group Stage draw has thrown together some intriguing contests, with established names and ambitious emerging clubs all looking to make their mark in history. I hope that this Statistics Handbook helps you to get the most out of your own Europa League season.
